Thought I'd start a thread now that the shows have been revealed. Who's got a DC or student applying? I have a feeling in my bones it won't be my DS's year this time - he's nearly 15, voice not broken but not reliable either, and apart from the one show we don't know I can't see anything he could obviously do! But he'll give it best shot and if no luck we'll still watch the shows. Good luck to all!

Thought I would update. DS did his NYMT audition today. Really enjoyed it all although with a breaking voice he felt his singing was never going to be his strong suit. It wasn't a total disaster so he's relatively content with that, but doesn't know if he did enough. We'll have to wait and see...

Thanks lonecatwithkitten! And congrats on the Read college place! It looks great. DS didn’t fancy the commute or we would have looked too!

folkmamma · 21/01/2020 13:12

Already booked in for BYMT audition @lonecatwithkitten (although now had to request to move it as she is currently booked in for the same day as her NYMT recall....)

Lonecatwithkitten · 21/01/2020 13:03

@minimits congratulations to your DS.
@folkmamma if doesn't get recall consider BYMT DD had a great time last year and really benefited.

Biscuitsneeded · 20/01/2020 22:05

Big congrats to Minimits' DS and Folkmamma's DD. Great news.

minimits · 20/01/2020 19:23

Woohoo folkmamma! Just to get a recall is fab! Congrats!

folkmamma · 20/01/2020 17:58

Eeeeeek! Just heard DD has been re-called for Imaginary! 🤩😍 we are absolutely delighted, even if it goes no further she's so happy to have made it through!

folkmamma · 20/01/2020 10:21

Oooh congrats on the recall @minimits!! Let's hope third time lucky!!

DD still young (12) and also a musician so she auditioned as both. She is also very determined and will (quote) "just keep on trying until they let me in" 😂

minimits · 20/01/2020 10:05

That's great to hear folk mamma. DS also loved his audition, he's even returned with a whole new group of friends as they created a group chat after and have been chatting ever since! He's been recalled for Kiss me Kate but is realistic about his chances. It's his fourth year of trying and third recall year so he's certainly determined! Good luck to your DD!

folkmamma · 20/01/2020 08:58

So DD had her audition yesterday. She had an absolutely brilliant day!!! Said there was some incredible talent there so (quote) "I don't think it will be this year Mummy". Although I'll still be on obsessive refresh until we hear one way or another 🤣

How's everyone else getting on??

Biscuitsneeded · 07/01/2020 06:58

@HandbagAddiction. Hello! Loads of luck to DD xx

@EvilTwins. How exciting re Sleepy Hollow! My DD very fortunate to have been part of that original NYMT cast too and she just loved the experience, the music and the whole show.

Didn't get in at all in 2019 - but we had issues with loose teeth around audition time :-) last year which hugely affected her ability to be able to sing properly!

Trying again in 2020...….

@Lonecatwithkitten, that's great news, a huge well done to your DD. @manicmumsday, thank you, I will reply tonight!

@biscuitsneeded: thank you, that's a really kind offer. Will definitely take you up on it as DS would love some more opportunities to perform. He definitely seems to have decided that theatre is his thing. Good luck to your DS for the 2nd. Breaking voices seem to be very unpredictable, being wobbly one day and fine the next (my oldest DS' voice is also breaking) so it could be that his voice is fine on the day. Fingers crossed.

@Lonecatwithkitten: great tip, thanks, will pass it onto DS. Congratulations to your DD for her sixth form place!

Lonecatwithkitten · 06/01/2020 13:06

@manicmumsday remind him to thank the pianist after they have played for them as they are not just talent, but ability to work will in a team.
I have other news DD has been offered and accepted a place at Read College for their sixth form MT course which is really exciting.

Biscuitsneeded · 05/01/2020 21:14

It's true you never can tell. He has a singing teacher who is great so hopefully she and he will come up with a good plan!

EvilTwins · 05/01/2020 21:09

Good luck to him Biscuits - you never can tell with these things.

folkmamma · 05/01/2020 20:56

Awww @Biscuitsneeded been thinking of you! Does your DS have singing lessons at all? If so, does his teacher have any pearls of wisdom - any exercises or anything that can help stabilise things...? (I'm totally ignorant in such things!!)

Biscuitsneeded · 05/01/2020 20:48

@EvilTwins, that's such fabulous news.I remember you were trying to get the rights. I'm sure you'll do a wonderful job with it, and if we were any nearer we would come and watch.
Will keep my fingers crossed that your two students get some good news this week. Since I started this thread my DS' voice is definitely breaking with much eee-awing. Am not optimistic for him but hope very much for good news for lots of his friends even if it can't be his turn.

Hello. I am a teacher rather than a mum but am on my 4th year of NYMT auditions. My two boys (one is an ex-student - in his 2nd year at LIPA now, and the other is a current Yr 12) auditioned yesterday in Bristol. Both enjoyed themselves. It’s the 4th year for the older one, 2nd for the younger.

In other news (@Biscuitsneeded) after doing The Battle of Boat last year, my students will be doing Sleepy Hollow this year! I am very excited - rights are only just being released so I think we’re likely to be its first post-NYMT outing.

Biscuitsneeded · 04/01/2020 12:59

@manicmumsday, your DS will be at the same audition as my DS! They probably won't be in same age group but it's always a really friendly day. I hope your DS enjoys himself and whatever happens, as it seems we live in the same area and you said you don't know much about it, feel free to PM me as there are loads of great performing opportunities locally that your DS might like to get involved in if he's thinking theatre might be his thing.

manicmumsday · 04/01/2020 12:51

@Biscuitsneeded: Thank you! He's going on 2 Feb. I think he'll probably sing "Where is Love?" from Oliver as he already knows it well so less chance of nerves derailing him than if he learns a new song. I've talked to him about just enjoying the experience of the day and not necessarily expecting anything to come from it so I'm hoping it'll be a positive experience for him whatever happens. Good luck to your DS this year too. It sounds like he's had a fantastic run over the last few years, whatever happens this time!

Biscuitsneeded · 03/01/2020 17:49

@manicmumsday Hello and welcome! As the 'owner' of a DS I can reassure you no dance training is needed. I hope your boy has a fab time. When is he going? For songs, we started out with Oliver and Billy Elliott, but you could also do anything that isn't obviously for a girl. Lots of Disney songs are suitable, or Joseph, or Little People which Gavroche used to sing in Les Mis, or Castle on a Cloud, or something from Bugsy Malone? They just want to hear them sing and won't judge them on their song choice unless they try and do a massive romantic ballad or something really odd! Lots of luck to your DS .

OP posts:
manicmumsday · 03/01/2020 09:55

@Lonecatwithkitten: phew, that's a relief! I had visions of all the other kids skilfully tap dancing and DS standing there looking bewildered. Thanks for the song suggestions. I'd thought of Oliver as DS knows the songs well but hadn't considered Billy Elliott.

Lonecatwithkitten · 02/01/2020 19:53

No one will laugh at him and the vast majority of boys have no formal dance training. The most important thing with the dance is smile and keep going even if you make a mistake.
For song think about casting type Oliver or Billy Elliott would be good.
