NYMT 2020

Thought I'd start a thread now that the shows have been revealed. Who's got a DC or student applying? I have a feeling in my bones it won't be my DS's year this time - he's nearly 15, voice not broken but not reliable either, and apart from the one show we don't know I can't see anything he could obviously do! But he'll give it best shot and if no luck we'll still watch the shows. Good luck to all!

Sorry to hear that manicmumsday. I’ve still not heard and I’m kind of glad as DS has a competition semi final tonight and I didn’t want him to be disappointed before that.

Dd's 3rd year of trying, 1st year recalled, we couldnt attend as were in holiday abroad, last year recalled for Growl, but it was a no, and this year although recalled for Imaginary, we realised we are on holiday for one of the Saturdays!!
But, just found out she has got into the new musical workshop so delighted 😀

I’ve literally just received an email too. Sadly it’s also a no for my DS for Imaginary. l’m not looking forward to telling him but he had a fantastic time at both workshops so it was a really worthwhile experience for him anyway.

A massive good luck to everyone still waiting for news. Hope you’re not waiting much longer.

They emailed me, she's only 12. Our surname is A, not sure if that makes a difference!

Emails are starting guys. Sadly a no for DD for Imaginary. Gutted, but that's the way of it! Still waiting on outcome of her musician audition but not hopeful there.

If prior years are anything to go by (having looked at similar Mumsnet threads from those years), results don’t start coming out until late pm at the earliest. So if today is the day, I’m trying not to check email obsessively until then. May not succeed though. And I think wine will be required this evening if the wait turns out to be a long one...

My daughter ended up not going to the call back. She has GCSEs this year, and decided that she can't cope with the thought of a busy Easter. We will try again next year.

I did see a man dancing around at some point, but I just assumed it was someone who was somehow involved!!

We've gone without a holiday in the past to make NYMT happen for DS - it was worth every penny and more.
I'm sure we're all finding the waiting painful. I think it's more than just nervous tension, worrying about how they will react if it's not happy news etc. I kind of want to know what Easter and summer might look like! It's only just over 5 weeks until the residentials!

Quick question for the NYMT gurus on here - does everyone who attended recalls usually get news on the same day?

That’s great to hear!
DS is never happier than when involved in a production. He definitely suffers from post show blues.
We had a 10-3:30 slot.
If you were a 10 o’clocker, did you see the slightly alarming man dancing outside as they went in? He was not part of the team!!
I was actually a bit worried about the way he was watching them all.
Anyway, he was cleared away.

I guess we find out by Wednesday then?

I’m keen for him to get in but also keen to go on holiday! 😆
It’ll be one or the other!

@Triflefan, Yes, my DS was there on Saturday for Henrietta and Ragtime, but may not have been in the same Ragtime session as your DS as they run them throughout the day.

Down time... well there isn't much of it! They rehearse from 9 - 9 every day with breaks for meals. Sometimes if they're not needed for a scene or a music call they can chill outside with the pastoral staff or pop into town depending on age. It is all the most fun DS has ever had (both the performing and the social side of things) as he feels it's such a privilege to live among and work with other young people who are like him, share his interests, some of whom are crazily talented etc. He has learned so much form NYMT and made wonderful friends. They look after them very well.

Useful to know that there’s a possibility of both although as he’s in GCSE year that might be disastrous for his results!
MT is most definitely his passion so he’s applying himself to dance now. He can move but it’s not something he has any formal qualifications for.

I’m not sure why he hasn’t asked to get involved before but the Mayflower in Southampton have a summer youth project which he loves so he’s kind of just stuck with that.

He’s 16 (15 for auditions!) and has loved the process so far.
He seemed to be in a really nice group for auditions and then for recalls he said everyone was nice too but I think he had been hoping to see some familiar faces.
His previous group pretty much all had Sunday recalls but I’d asked (if possible) for Saturday.
That was a shame really.
Did anyone else on here have a Saturday slot?
Glad to hear there are laundry facilities!
Do they all generally enjoy the down time do you know?

Hi Triflefan, welcome! Congrats to your DS - a recall is a big achievement. How old is your DS? Did he enjoy the recalls? I can highly recommend NYMT which your DS, if lucky enough to be selected, will love.
My DS is also keen to audition for NYT but I haven't booked it yet. If he doesn't get NYMT this time (voice breaking so likely to be an issue) we may well grab one of the last remaining NYT audition slots if he still wants to have a go. But as you've paid, your DS may as well go - if he's got into NYMT then that will give him confidence and if he hasn't, well then NYT might cheer him up! Depending on finances, if cast in Ragtime your DS might be able to do both. The NYT summer course finishes on the day the Ragtime summer residential starts (and yes they do have laundry facilities at the NYMT venue, haha, anticipating what would be one of my first questions!!). So with a few negotiations that might be possible. Glad you've found us, and good luck to your DS.

I just stumbled across this thread by googling NYMT 2020!

I’m desperate to know!
He had recalls on Saturday for Kiss me Kate, Ragtime and the summer workshop.

I’m fairly clueless as DS has never auditioned for these things before.
He’s done Panto and various local productions but this has been a first.

He has an audition for NYT in a week or so but if he is fortunate enough to get into NYMT then presumably there’s no point going to the NYT audition? 🤔

Although I guess I’ve paid and it’ll still be good experience.

Same here, @folkmamma, my DS also had a really fun afternoon and came out buzzing. He loved the acting and singing and said the dancing was less of a disaster than last time. So whatever happens, it’s been a great experience for him.

So glad to read these positive experiences. Obviously we'll all be nervous wrecks by mid-week but at least for now the kids are happy and can feel proud of what they achieved.
