Hi all

Here is the new music thread for January - I hope no one minds me starting it.

I am mum to a son (7) who is learning the piano and trumpet and a daughter (5) who is learning the piano and violin. I am having piano lessons and played the trumpet as a child.

Some of the people on these threads (and their children) are fantastic musicians. Some are more like me. All are welcome.

Thank you to Wafflenose for all the time she has spent managing these threads.

Here she is with some of her stuff. The shield was won by my clarinet quartet. Rara also has two little individual cups, and there are two cups at school, won by Year 6 (including her) and Year 4.

Well done rara, and the opportunity to play RAH sounds amazing (although i appreciate it can also be a pita organisation wise).

We're plodding along fairly peacefully here considering dd1 has 3 performances next week, dd2 has 2 and ds has 1. Luckily the same concerts so all 3 are playing on wednesday, 2 are playing on friday and one on saturday, otherwise i think id be a lot more grey haired than i already am!

cats absolutely! DS1 did several schools proms at RAH and has very happy memories! This will be the third one for DS2 and it's amazing to think in his first one, he had just passed grade 1 cello and now is working on grade 7 - and he appears to have doubled in height!

School governor with responsibility for music and NCO patron so not a frequent poster but wanted to say that even if the Albert Hall concert seems like a lot of time and effort for a short slot your DC will have a fantastic memory for life. Played in a schools prom 40 years ago and it was an amazing experience to play to that size of audience which I still remember now.

On our way home after last night's school concert. Pleased to report that we were completely blown away by the playing and the supportive atmosphere, as were any doubts that this was the right place for our ds. If you're considering this avenue for your dc, I'd really recommend attending a concert or two.

Well done Rara! And welcome to the new people since I last posted.

It's been quiet(ish) here. DS2 is looking at sixth forms and choosing A levels. And coming round to realising GCSEs are looming!

Tomorrow we have a Festival organised masterclass which DS2 is participating in. Annoyingly it clashes with DS1's uni's slot in unibrass. Unibrass (university brass band contest) is streamed live so usually gets see him.

Loose, CONVO is indeed an interesting project. Kids can get involved in the collaboration along the way and it's a massive (two years long) event from what I understand. But I get what Wiifitmama means too...

Luckyfab - I am sure it will be great and they are certainly lucky to be able to perform there. But it has seemed to take over for more than a year and I will be glad when they can get back to their normal music rehearsals.

It will be a long day but I think it will be also a great experience to be behind the scenes at the RHA. I am sure they will all benefit from this experience.

@luckyfab mine are not the orchestra - they are in another group. I am not really looking forward to it to be honest. The music is weird, they are not playing for long but will have to be there from 12pm on the day for a concert in the evening, and the rehearsals are clashing with other music commitments they have. I do feel a bit bah humbug about it all! However, I have dutifully bought the tickets and will be there to watch them.

No - we’re in one small and relatively insignificant borough in SW London. And yes, the weekend rehearsals complicate life a bit! On the other hand, DS2 doesn’t do any sport, so we have got off lightly over the years and I can’t complain.

@Looseattheseams - is the RAH concert CONVO? Triborough? If so, my kids are in that too. They are counting the days until it is over and can get back to normal music! Plus the rehearsals are taking over some weekends where they are having to miss other stuff.

RAH sounds impressive but DS2 will be a tiny dot among many from across the borough! Great fun and an amazing experience, though!

Excited to be attending our first proper concert at ds's new school tonight. Just the small matter of the 175 mile round trip and overnight stay to make it happen. Hope the weather behaves itself. Hmm

A triumph for Rara! Star
Not masses to report here except DS2 has joined a lovely new orchestra and has weekend rehearsals with his borough string ensemble for the next few weeks ready for a concert at the Albert Hall.
Am I a bad person for slightly hoping today's piano lesson gets cancelled due to the snow? It won't and he does need to go - g5 exam is later this term! His pieces sound great - apart from the niggly little places that need focus! Sigh. And at some point I have to become scales tyrant again just to make sure they're ready for the exam.
