Christmas and January Music Thread *Thread title edited by MNHQ*

After I read catkind's post last night I requested MNHQ to add 'January' to this thread title so that we could carry on using it this month. Please ignore this and let's use the new thread CruCru kindly started.

That sounds like a good plan neleus. Though I'm sure given where he is in his musical journey he's going to be moving forward anyway, barring they actually build a brick wall in front of him

Frankley I think waffle is just taking a break. Perhaps someone else could start a January thread when we have had enough of being festive.

Wafflenose As a long time mostly lurker on these threads please keep it going. It has given me, and I'm sure many others, much pleasure. Please don't be put off, it is so worthwhile.

I think that is a really good way of looking at it neleus. Dd1 has had some periods with several different teachers and it can be quite inspirational and refreshing with new inputs.

Just yesterday we were discussing cover while her teacher is on tour.....

Thanks catkind. DS doesn't know much detail but we reckon the school will email the parents to explain the situation so we'll wait till we hear from them for now. It's not great to be honest. But things happen... At least DS isn't disheartened by that (that much, yet). Maybe we should see this term isn't so much of 'moving forward' but 'have fun with different teachers and styles of teaching' and perhaps bring some inspirations and joys out of it...

It's 'the' teacher. So he'll be teacher-less for a while. Apparently he'll continue having lessons but with several teachers who will be covering during the teacher's absence which doesn't really sound ideal, especially he's just started settling with the new practice routine (he started with the teacher in Sep). Things happen so never mind. But slightly annoyed we got the news via DS and nothing from the school (DS has lessons at school). Must add that DS isn't an articulate kind. So no clear explanation nor plan to fill the gap.

neleus, nice to have warning... I hope not for any bad reason. I presume he has "a" teacher just not "the" teacher? Could be a different perspective, but bad timing, I hope your DS is not upset.

I said no exciting news from us in the previous post. Well, not exactly 'exciting' but DS told me today that his teacher would be away for THE WHOLE TERM from this weekend. So he'll be teacher-less till next term. He just went back to the lesson this week after 4 weeks off...

Happy New Year everyone. Having slacked off a bit, we’ve just done a load of music practise. My daughter has started the violin but so far she is spending time on how to hold it (which she likes to demonstrate to us).

Ah yes the tree the combination of tree plus Christmas guests occupying the usual homes of music stuff resulted in assorted instruments and accessories all over the place. Opening doors was something of a hazard with the risk of being asaulted by a crash cymbal or similar

Nothing really exciting to report from me. Just all back to normal (school, work, no tree in the living room...). DS has school on Saturdays from this term though. Haven't got used to it yet. Feel weird.

Well done minisnowballs junior! While scales can be a solid banker with regard to bumping up the marks, it isn't the end of the world if there is a blip. Still waiting here for DD1's result from the end of November........

Just popping on to say thanks to those who were encouraging about dd2s flute exam, where she messed up all of her scales and came out in tears. Just had the results - a solid merit (and she passed the scales element!). Phew!

Violinmama, where are you in UK? I have one for sale, ordered two different cases from Germany, and now have one that is hardly used. It has space for a shoulder rest and also a tube for strings. It’s a bit heavy but does the job well.

Hi catkind! Our only local (and brilliant) luthier has just sold up and moved back to Germany 😢 We are only left with a high street style store which only sells complete violin outfits in small sizes.

The oblong case I bought was off eBay so not returnable but I think I will be able to resell it if/when I find something that will do the job 🤞.

Oh no violinmama! Can you exchange the new one? Sorry don't know about brands, any chance of trying out in the shop?

We’re in search of a half size violin case that will accommodate an Everest shoulder rest. I’d wrongly assumed that by upgrading to a rectangular case with an oblong cut out section would be fine but alas we now have 2 cases that don’t do the job 😫
