Guiders Staff Room Part 2

I forgot to report back on "burns night"!

It went really well. We went through what burns and scalds are, what to do if someone got burned, what could cause burns/what types there are, a few true and false statements, then let them loose on their victims. I used face paints to give one of each Six a nasty looking "burn" while they were busy with the theory stuff.

OMG the mess! Having actual first aid supplies (hurrah for the £1 shop!) available went to their heads. Most immediately covered the burn in savlon and a bandage. Several also tried out the after sun, hand cream (?!), standard plasters... Most forgot to cool it first. Fortunately nobody decided that using butter was a good idea.

I got the victims to stand up at the end when we all came together, and went through the treatment they'd had. We announced that they'd died of a nasty infection if it was wrong, we only had the one survivor by home time, she was very well cling filmed :o

They had a fabulous time, and the St John's ambulance teaching website was really helpful in coming up with handouts and stuff. We never did have time to practise their recover positions, they'll have to do that on Friday :o

Hike went really well. It was mostly across fields, although we had to cross a railway line and a main road. We ended up using a hidden footpath and arrived at the park from a different direction to usual before playing a couple of wide games in the dark. Then a short promise ceremony (for the two adults, myself and the other lady) before going for chips. A fab night.

Tomorrow night is enrolment, I've organised half a dozen to do their hostess badge, using the parents as guests. Brown owl has the rest of the night sorted... I hope!

Lol Delicto, that reminds me of when I agreed under pressure to do brownies, only for the last remaining guider to announce that she was only staying until Christmas to help me settle in... But a night hike to fish and chip shop sounds fabulous!

Rue, did you come up with anything else for your burns night?

I've had some Safeguarding posters through - do you all have one displayed in your meeting place?

My backing for our display board had fallen down by the time we got to our meeting last night . I put it back up to see how it lasts but think I might just have to stick things on the boring white board unless there's some sort of tape I can stick to it.

I'm with brownies. Leading a night hike tomorrow, from our village to the nearest fish & chip shop

I thought there weren't any surprises possible- until our brown owl announced she plans to stand down at Easter!

Not till Friday, thankfully! I don't think I know any nurses that could help, will ask around though.

They've had St John's Ambulance come in to cover off most bits, and they're back again next week, so we just have the burns bit to cover "in-house" as it were.

What day is your meeting? Do you know any nurses? I wonder if you do, could you pick their brains for ideas.

Dd1's friends mum is a nurse - I'd try her for ideas (or coming in for a short session) if we covered something like that.

Thanks - not sure about chemical burns, can't see why we couldn't cover them.

Maybe I'll give them pictures of a tap to hold over the burn for 10 minutes not a hope of getting actual water near them, it'd be chaos!

Cool water for cooling the pretend burn? Maybe pretend water in case anyone gets giddy...or maybe that's just me imagining what my Rainbows would be like if presented with actual water to use .

Rue, does it include stuff like chemical burns? Maybe a look at the hazardous warning symbols on bottles etc. if it does & brief info on what to do if you come into contact with those chemicals? I doubt any of them have access to that kind of stuff but might be useful.

Hello ladies, I need some help please!

I'm running Brownies this week (usually do Rainbows) and we have to cover the burns and scalds clause of their first aid badge. I need to plan something!

Thoughts so far:
Use face paints to put a "burn" on one victim per six, then provide various first aid items for them to treat the victim. (Ideas of what to provide are welcome! Thinking cling film, bandage, phone, cream...what else?)

Cover the difference between burns and scalds, something about what can cause them - spotting potential causes around the home.

Other than that, I'm stuck. Help?

Oh the joy that is a full day of safeguarding

Right, everything out of the cupboard, apart from bottom shelf and paper, is now boxed and labelled on every side so it's easy to see what it is. Need to get it all back there now so will be calling school mum friends into action.

My FIL begged a couple of Tesco delivery crates for me to sort the paper/paints/wool on the bottom shelf into. Need a couple of bigger boxes for scrap fabric and spare uniform, and am going to see if the local post office will keep me an empty wrapping paper box for rolls of crepe paper to live in.

Folders are sort of organised ish - filled three lever arch files at the mo, plus have bought a small ring binder for my weekly stuff.

And I've made a start on a display wall for us to fill.

Training day tomorrow & then a well deserved day of rest on Sunday.

I've actually planned a few meetings ahead of time! Next week we'll come up with ideas for a community action project, have them plan their GFI evening and do a few promise activities (so the new girls can choose when to do theirs). The week after that pumpkin carving and roasting the seeds/lighting candles. Then it's half term.
I've even sent out an email to other units in the district to go ice skating together!
I've been inspired in to organisation by this thread.

That would be so very exciting, truffle. I think they just announced the name 'Kusafiri', which means journey in Swahili. Good luck for your meeting!

I was going to have a chat with them this coming week about the things they'd like to do truffle so will take them back with me to show them and see what they say.

Madwoman I don't know anything about it yet - I've got a meeting with my mentor on Tuesday who is also the International lead for our division so will find out more then

Lucysmam, what about asking the girls for their ideas about what you could do with the till rolls ? Would be a good way to give the girls input into the activity and make their own decisions. They might also have some good ideas !!!

Failing that I'd sell them on Ebay and turn them into some funds
