I was waiting for someone else to start it but had to take the plunge to tell you i just did my w5r3. I managed it but am hurting. Started off too quick and was wrecked 5 mins in but slowed it down - kept going and got to about 14 mins in when my ankles started really hurting - i kept on going anyway and was v relieved when raaawb said that was it - i then proceeed to hobble home - the bath is filling as i type and my ankles are painful but still that i did it.

JB - I went to somewhere that did that, it was great, she had me jog on the treadmill and never told me the price of the trainers. in the end the ones I chose and that we agreed on were some of the cheapest ones I tried

Lovely Rita there is a great shop in Cambridge or Pterborough if they are closer for you.

JackBauer · 06/07/2009 14:29

Hi all, welcome greyskull, loving the name btw, watched HF last night actually...

Zen, Up and Running is where I went, what you need is somewhere with either a RAM (running Analysis MAchine) or a Gait Analysis Machine, which is a camera on the back of a treadmill (pointed at your feet only....)
'Tis expensive but I found it well worth it as I always got really bad shin splints and now don't get them at all as they found I was running with my ankles tilted and sold me trainers that corrected that.

InTheZenGarden · 06/07/2009 14:28

Thanks Lovely Rita, it is Up and Running, just had a look through the thread ... sorry, should have done that in the first place.
Well, they have one in nottingham, so I guess I'd better get myself in there.... bit at the potential cost, but DH is in a "spend what you need if it'll get you fit" mood atm, so may as well go for it now!!

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 06/07/2009 12:19

hello all, can I join you?

I have been running for 2 weeks now, every other night (where circumstances allow)
I am really enjoying it. I have loads of weight to loose and need to get fit.

I have a 2 mile route that I am doing at the moment and it is taking about 25 minutes- I have my ipod on and I started running for a song walking for a song and so on, but towards the end of last week I realised I could runn for 2 songs then walk for 1 and so on.

Once I can run all the way there I am going to increase the distance, I believe I need to be going out for at least 25 minutes for it to be doing me any good (weight or fitness wise)

if anyone has some fab tips I would love to hear them.

Thanks

LovelyRitaMeterMaid · 06/07/2009 12:16

Did my run and am pleased to announce my minutes per mile was under 11

(it was 10.59 min/mile but as that was for 30 min and I was away at the weekend in Germany mainly drinking beer I am very pleased).

Well done Zen on your first run. You'll be doing 20 min in no time .

I have some Nike trainers which I actually got from ebay a couple of years ago. There is a shop people have recommended on here where they watch you running and recommend trainers based on that - maybe Just Running? Will look properly back in the thread some time.

InTheZenGarden · 06/07/2009 12:00

Oh, and if anyone can help here would be very grateful

InTheZenGarden · 06/07/2009 11:04

Just done w1r1

I was puce by the end, which I was about, but I did get to the very end

Def need new trainers - the ones I have are the ones I had pre-DD and I think my feet have got bigger since then!

Does anyone have any recommendations of where to go/not go for trainers? I feel I need advice on what to buy, so I am a bit dubious about going to somewhere like Decathlon, which we have near us (I'm in Nottingham) as it always feels like a warehouse shop. Think we have a JJB sports or something similar at a retail park nearby, and there's all the "usual" city centre places of course. Any suggestions?

Am very at those of you doing 20 minute runs, I really hope I can do it in a few weeks. Can't believe I was huffing and puffing at a total of 8 minutes running, with 90 second breaks between each minute run

LovelyRitaMeterMaid · 06/07/2009 09:38

I thought that I could never manage 20 minutes running, but somehow I did

Am about to go and do a 30 min run now

tryingtocookacurry · 06/07/2009 07:24

I did week 5 run 1 this morning and can't believe that 5 minutes now feels easier than last week. Not looking forward to run3 this week which is a full 20 min run. Really don't think it will happen for me.

How did everybody else get on with this one?

Superduperloopthelooper · 05/07/2009 20:56

Hello .

I have run wk4r2 today and found it much easier than run1, although I did that last week in the heat.

I now have some sparkly bouncy new trainers and they have really helped and, following advice on here, have stuck to running on pavement which has been much easier.

I am really trying with my breathing but I am averaging one fly swallowed per run at the moment

JackBauer · 05/07/2009 14:56

Hello all, well done monty, I found wk3 particularly bad on my knees, btu since i stopped running on grass and moved to pavements instead, and doing stretches afterwards I ahve found it a lot better.

Did wk7r3 this morning, 2.25 mins or something, but I am still walking for a minute in the middle, it's just too much otherwise
But hey, am still running!

lulalullabye · 04/07/2009 22:57

Hello, I have started again, with 4 wks off with no running. Have done w1 again and so far no pain in my knees. I have bought some patella straps that sit just under the knee cap and so far they seem to be working

Lets see how I go !

Montifer · 04/07/2009 22:42

Back from W3 R2 and it was so much easier than the last one - hurrah.
However have got a rather unpleasant achey knee thing going on, the inner aspect of both knees, feels like it's in the joint, right knee much more than left. I've done a lot of stretching and they feel a bit better now but hope knees aren't going to cause problems already, I'm only 3 weeks in

Hope everyone is finding the cooler weather more forgiving.

Zen - hope you have a lovely day tomorrow, good luck for your run on monday.

InTheZenGarden · 04/07/2009 21:30

Thanks for the support
No, montifer, no colour coded plans yet, though I do feel a list coming on ... since DD was born, I find that if I don't write a list, I tend to forget to do something vital ... like feed DD

Anyway, our plan for tomorrow is drop DD of with grandparents, drive to Peak District for walk and pub lunch, drive back home for brief snooze then off out for Thai meal in evening. Have a few drinks (I don't work Mondays, so hey) and then bed and then don't get woken by DD at 5.30. Bliss

Then run on Monday. Honest

tryingtocookacurry · 04/07/2009 08:34

starting week 5 on Monday and getting worried!

In the Zen, good luck for your first day!

Montifer · 03/07/2009 23:22

LOL Zen - will you be doing a colour coded timetable for sunday

Nappyzoneisabeetrootrunner · 03/07/2009 21:13

its 35 mins max thats all it is - 24hrs hmmm

OP posts:
InTheZenGarden · 03/07/2009 21:11

God nappy, I need hounding. Better warn you in advance though, Sunday may turn into Monday.... In laws are looking after DD for 24 hours for the first time in 14 months Dh and I are not quite sure what to do with our brief, new-found freedom! But going for a run may not be on the list.....

Promise I will check back in though

Nappyzoneisabeetrootrunner · 03/07/2009 21:03

no you have not got it wrong - week 1 to about 5 i think are the same runs but then when you get further on the runs for the weeks vary so day 1,2 and 3 will differ but are all played on the same podcast. Sounds confusing but it actually isnt as they start and stop at same times. Its a miracle how it all come stogether - you will see . I will be back to hound you on Sunday so dont slope off !!

OP posts:
InTheZenGarden · 03/07/2009 20:49

Have bought an MP3 player, so that's progress!

Still feeling rough after having had ?flu, but hoping to run Sunday or Monday, for the first time

Can I just check, have briefly looked at the podcast site, and I got the impression that you do the same run three times each week? So am confused when nappyzone says she did w6r2 rather than w6r1... have I got it wrong before I've started?

Nappyzoneisabeetrootrunner · 03/07/2009 20:42

oooo everyone is steaming ahead even in the heat! Well i went out for the first time tonight - i set out to repeat week6 run 1 but felt ok so continued through to do w6r2 so i guess im back in business .

When coming back in to our road my friend was just running out our road whom i recruited - she was on her warm up of w2r1 - i was very red.

So whos been out today ?

Inthezen did you get sorted?

OP posts:
InTheZenGarden · 02/07/2009 15:20

Better get myself off to Tesco tomorrow then, hadn't I?

Wow, Jack, I'm really impressed you can run so far after such a short time - definitely gives me hope.

I did Race4Life a few years ago, but that was all before having DD - indulging too much during pregnancy and not stopping once I'd given birth and stopped BFing Plus have done pretty much no exercise in all that time (DD is 14 months)

But, right now I am motivated and it is so good to know that there is this thread to keep me going. At school, I was the one who had the beautifully-coloured-in revision timetable, great intentions, but never actually got round to revising I am great at planning my exercise routine and fab new diet, but rubbish at implementing it, I always come up with an excuse

Fingers crossed, this time I will be successful

JackBauer · 02/07/2009 14:49

Ooh, I bought a nwe MP3 this morning after MIL lost misplaced my cheapo tesco one, I replaced it with an even cheaper tesco one!

it doesn't 'shuffle' it just plays what you put onit, so it's perfect!
Although I did put the firt podcasts on my phone and ran with that.

Anyway, back to point, Hi Zen! Good luck, and it gets easier, I honestly thought I was going to die after my first run, genuinely worried about heart attack/stroke etc but now I can run over 2 miles without keeling over. And that's only been 7 weeks!

InTheZenGarden · 02/07/2009 14:08

Hi, could I join you please?
Saw a mention of this thread on one of the weight loss ones, and have checked out the podcast site - all I need now is an MP3 player and I'm set So behind the times

I need to lose a stone or so and really want to get fit - want to TTC #2, but I need to get into shape first, and DH is worried that my level of unfitness will make pregnancy and labour difficult, and potentially be a helath risk. He's absolutely right though, although I'm only slightly overweight, I am very unfit.

So, I have every incentive, now just to get started! Just getting over a bug now, but hope to be up to running next week, time to get an MP3 player, some decent trainers, some clothes.......
