Anyone doing it?

Either London or Edinburgh?

Anyone interested in a fitness / support thread?

I'm doing it for the 3rd time in May (missed last year, as it was the night DS was born!) and really looking forward to it, but feeling a bit more apprehensive, as I'm not as fit as I used to be!

Thank you for the warm welcome Funny Peculiar.

Well done Tilly, 11 miles is great going.

You can do it Wiffey!

Inspired by all of you, I have found my own charity walk!! It's a midnight walk taking place on Saturday 23 May in East Anglia - it's only 8 miles - and is in aid of the hospice where my father died five years ago. It's will be an achievable and meaningful objective for me (2-3 hrs long apparently) and I will be registering next week with one of my sisters. Can't wait!! So thanks for the inspiration everyone!

bigTillyMint · 21/02/2009 12:15

Hi Wiffey - where were you training this morning - I was too (by the Thames!)

I think you'll be fine - still 12 weeks to go and the pack recommends a 12 / 13 week plan. And they don't get to 8 miles in the first week!

We did just over 11 miles today but it felt like more and my back's aching now - I am so old!

wiffey · 20/02/2009 22:05

Found you all at last

I'm doing London with a few others but have only really started training in last few weeks.

Going to do 8 miles in the morning but really scared that I'm not going to get enough training in, any words of wisdom from previouse walkers would be very very welcome.

funnypeculiar · 20/02/2009 18:05

I only got my pack through this week, marg, so they may well still be sending them out in batches

Kiwi - I have been lamentably bad about stretching - was interested to read in the pack that it suggested stretching every day (not just on 'walk' days) - am going to try and remember to do that...

And sorry, didn't say welcome to countingthegreyhairs - good to have you on board

marg1066 · 20/02/2009 15:32

thanks everyone, I'll get into the swing of it, I hope! I've been unwell so not been out again, hoping for the the weekend and a longer walk this time.
Still not had my pack through, is there anybody else not got theres?

bigTillyMint · 20/02/2009 07:30

Marg, don't panic - I'm sure if you get going now you'll be fine. I think our pack says do 3 or 4 x 3 or so miles the first couple of weeks, so that's not too hard to get started on. It seems like you have to do a longer (increasingly so!) one once a week.

Kiwi, I must take another good long look at the stretching exercises.... I have bought myself a flash pedometer, but I forgot to take it on our last long walk! It measures steps, km, calories and probably other things, but I haven't quite worked it all out yet!

Well done fp - you will be at the finish line as we are all starting

funnypeculiar · 19/02/2009 22:13

hello - how's everyone getting on? Dh has noticed how much faster I'm walking - which is very satisfying (he's WAY fitter than me!)
We're doing a 14 mile walk this weekend (as well as our 2 shorter walks in the week) - suddenly feels like this is taking over my life a bit!

kiwibella · 17/02/2009 22:31

ooops... and good job both of you for getting out and beating the feet .

kiwibella · 17/02/2009 22:31

I found a mile is so deceptive - I thought the trip down to town and back would be three miles so hit it hard (well, as hard as I could with toddler and a pushchair ). But, when I measured it in the car it is only a mile each way.

I need a flash measuring thing-a-me-bob .

marg1066 · 17/02/2009 20:20

Thanks Kiwibella, not received my pack yet but managed to get out yesterday done around 2 miles, uphill one way, I know its ot much but its a start xx

Countingthegreyhairs · 17/02/2009 15:00

Thank you Kiwibella - managed to get out twice since then (not quite so late although weather was foul) so starting to feel as though I am getting back on track ...

Hope your training goes well this week despite the school holidays!

Marg - you can do it!!

kiwibella · 16/02/2009 22:48

hiya Counting... well done for doing what works for you!!

Marg - I would follow up on your pack. There are twelve weeks until the London event now... and their training schedule suggests over thirteen. The biggest tip I got from the pack was stretching daily to build up strength and flexibility (and I think someone mentioned similarly and provided a link the other day??). Get walking and working on your endurance

I need to practice what I preach cos I'm so good at making excuses... altho, being half term my dd's are helping me to avoid exercise.

marg1066 · 15/02/2009 16:53

Hi Tillymint, I'm doing the Ed moonwalk and I'm frightened to death! I haven't started to train yet it's not to late is it? Haven't had my starter pack through yet, so using that as an excuse , can you or anybody else offer me advice pretty please

Countingthegreyhairs · 14/02/2009 20:21

Yes but I spare the general public the sight of me shambling through the streets

It's quite strange actually; I've tried for ages to exercise in the early mornings but I just feel ill! I feel much more energetic after 1pm and any time up to midnight. I tried to fight it for ages but I'm definitely an owl not a lark and (even more wierd this) exercising late at night actually makes me feel more energetic in the mornings when my human alarm clock jumps in bed at 6.50 wanting to fight the duvet monster ... I go through a horrible witching hour from 5-6pm when I feel like death though

Good luck with your training this w/e everyone ...

bigTillyMint · 14/02/2009 18:56

11pm Counting!!!!

I would be so tucked up in bed!

Countingthegreyhairs · 14/02/2009 15:52

Thank you very much - much appreciated!

Joining this thread has already spurred me to a 45 minute fast walk last night at 11pm so thanks for the - much needed - motivation!!

Am very impressed by your 10 mile walks .. gives me something to work towards ...and it's getting easier to get out of the house now the weather is improving ...

morethanyoubargainfor · 14/02/2009 08:51

Of course, come on in!

All welcome,(i am sure the others won't mind) we can all give each other motivation, and a kick in the right direction.

Countingthegreyhairs · 13/02/2009 23:10

Ah, bigTilly, that's so kind of you ... sniff ..waves gratefully in recognition ...

Um, er to everyone else, we are a collection of walkers from another thread (here):

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/sports_and_exercise/674362-Anyone-interested-in-joining-a-power-walking-thread- for-New

who aren't Moonwalking YET but who are trying to walk regularly and bump up our general fitness levels...

...some of us are following this programme from Good Housekeeping:

www.allaboutyou.com/diet-wellbeing/walking-plan-introduction/v1

  • would it please be OK if some of us/all of us join your thread here because all you Moonwalkers seem a bit more active than us and frankly we could do with the motivation (especially me ) ...

Quite understand if you want to keep it strictly for Moonwalkers though ...

BTW I'm hoping to do a Moonwalk with a friend next year ....'tis a very good cause ...

bigTillyMint · 13/02/2009 18:13

Waves to all joiners from other thread

morethanyoubargainfor · 12/02/2009 20:17

BTM, yes i do, and probably if i measured it it could be more.

It does help that i am a dog walker, so i kind of combine work with walking

I do live in my walking boots, i think i am going to have to wear them unless i wwant to be taken away by medical staff half way through because of broken bones!

bigTillyMint · 12/02/2009 17:55

mtybf

Are you really finding time for 4 - 5 miles 6 times a week?

We are all planning on wearing trainers. Walking boots might not be as flexible, but if you are comfortable in them, I'm sure it's not a problem

morethanyoubargainfor · 12/02/2009 15:57

hello all,

hope all is going well, we have finally recieved our packs. Trainig all going ok, do 4-5 mmiles 6 times a week and then one longer walk on day 7, the most it has been so far is 13 miles. (and today was my first ice related accident! )

mmy question is about the actual walk, i am making costumey type thigs, for our team to wear, but do people wear t shirts under thier bra or not? and footwear, i can't wear trainers as i have very very dodgy ankles, so have to wear big strapping walking boots which i was planning to wear for the moonwalk, would that be a problem?

bigTillyMint · 12/02/2009 15:25

I got mine too kb
Where are you? the ice has finally gone here now.

Well done fp - how long did it take? Impressed that you didn't get waylaid by a pub on a Friday night!

Aiming to do 10 miles or so on Sat - hope it's not too cold!

And I have splashed out on a gadget - got a pedometer

funnypeculiar · 12/02/2009 15:04

hello all
Have had a slightly rubbish few weeks, as me & my training buddy have both been busy. BUT we did do a 12 mile walk last week (on a Fri night, who says i don't know how to have fun?!). My back ached part way in (think I need to tilt my pelvis more ) but no aches the next morning, which was a bloody miracle!

kiwibella · 11/02/2009 15:15

I got my pack in the post this week - it is very encouraging and I found the suggested training schedule useful guidance. I am not able to get a lot of walking in which I really need to address... I am doing my best to walk everywhere with my dd - which is what slows me down .

The ice is hazardous!!
