Ideas for getting up off the sofa and running at 60yo.

I used to run up until 20 yrs ago. However 60yo now and turned into a couch potato to some extent. I work full time in a moderately physical job where I am on my feet all day. I am not overweight (BMI 24). However I am very unfit. I want to start running again and obvs need to start again from scratch
Always loved running and I live in very rural area and the runs do take in gorgeous scenery. No pools anywhere near me as also loved swimming. No chance of excercise classes as work 60 hours a week so time poor plus I actually looked forward to running but indoor exercise - meh! Hated yoga and pilates.
Anyone tried the couch to 5k at 60 plus ? Advice please. Health is good.

I haven’t but know plenty of 60+ year olds who started running when they were older. No reason at all not to especially if you used to run. It will come back quicker than you think but don’t be tempted to compare yourself to your former running self. Keep it slow and don’t progress too quickly. Repeat weeks if you need to. But also don’t shy away from harder weeks. It has to feel harder for you to improve!

Also have you thought about when you will run if you are working 60 hours a week? It is hard getting back from work and then going out for a run. I started running by using it as part of my commute but I know that doesn’t work for everyone. But try and run at a time of day that will be easier to stick to and just make it part of your routine.
Also try parkrun!
Good luck!

I wouldn’t worry too much about time, a 20 min jog 2/3 times a week is much easier to fit in than an exercise class where you’ve got travel either side.

Get some comfy trainers (you don’t need gait analysis) and download c25k and just GO. Repeat weeks if you need to.
Head down to a parkrun maybe for the first few weeks volunteering to get a feel for your local event? It’s still fresh air and a nice way to meet the core team before you start

The one thing I would consider about running is that is places huge strain on your hips and knees. I’m your age and would love to run but don’t for those reasons.

Tbh I don’t think I’d start running at 60. Running really isn’t good for your joints. If you had always ran and wanted to continue into your 60s fair enough but staring up after 20 years break isn’t the best idea.
I’d do walking or cycling instead.

Casualuser · Today 11:20

How much walking do you do?

Planningatripsoon · Today 11:21

Sounds fab! I would get decent trainers and make sure you warm up and stretch very well. Look into jeffing/fartlek- easier on the joints. See if there’s a local club near you? I am in a city and there’s loads. 60 is NOT too old!!!

Running is great for your joints if you do it sensibly and build up and (this is key) stop running and rest if you have pain.

Go for it OP, just take it easy. Your muscles and lungs adapt much much much quicker than tendons. So if something feels easy that's not an indication to push it or do more!

I would also consider incorporating some basic strength work (depending on what your job is) as building muscles to support your joints is also important in older age whether you are a runner or not.

I'd probably start with some power walking and preferably getting some hills in first to prepare for C25k.

Interval running/ jeffing has gained momentum in the last decade or so and there's a lot runners (and a bias to mature women) who strategically run/ walk as it suits them better than continuous running so that's an option if your body isn't keen on adjusting.
