I'm sorry your mum's fate was so similar, @BigButtons

I really hope that today's young woman, once they have recovered from the exhaustion of 'doing it all', will find the time to take care of themselves.

Hopefully future generations will prioritize their own health instead of running themselves ragged trying to look after everyone else.

BigButtons · 07/02/2023 19:29

I totally agree with you@FlowerArranger perhaps it was a generational thing? A harder life, less access to health care and preventative treatment. Maybe it wasn't as easy/accepted for women to exercise.

At least now exercise and strength training are known to be beneficial, we know so much more about cause and effect because of the advances in science. but 80% is still a shocking number. I think your thread did cause a few people to go and do something.
My mother fell and broke her hip, she never walked properly again. Death as a knock on effect of accidental falls is, I believe, the number one cause of death in the elderly.

I know some people on my AIBU thread got fed with my preaching. But I know whereof I speak. I watched what not exercising did to my mum and my grandmother. It wasn't pretty.

My grandmother came to live with us when she was 60. She was fat and immobile. An old woman. At sixty!! My only memories of her are of her sitting and, very rarely, walking, very slowly, as it clearly was a struggle. And her falling down a set of steps on a rare outing. Her only activity was a once weekly walk to the village centre to stock up on her favourite sweets. But even this became too much for her in her mid-70s. She lived to be 86, but the last decade was miserable. She never left her room except at Christmas and Easter, when my dad would exert himself to help her down the stairs.

Now, you might have thought that my mother, who witnessed all this and would get up twice a night to help her to the bathroom, who helped her wash and ultimately gave her bed-baths for many years, who carried her meals up to her room, etc etc...... would have done things differently. Except she didn't. At my urging she went to a few 'exercise for oldies' sessions - in her early sixties. But it was too much effort. She lived to be 90, but the last 18 months were miserable, after she fell and broke her hip. Her hip was fixed, but she didn't have the strength to walk. She never walked again. Her house, which she loved so much, had to be sold to pay for her care in a tiny room in a nursing home. She ended up starving herself to death. Literally. Because life had become totally unbearable.

I'm not sure why I'm telling you all this. Clearly I'm preaching to the choir. But I started that thread in the hope that some couch potatoes might wake up and see what they'll be dealing with in their old age. If anyone has any suggestions of how one might start an exercise revolution, I'm all ears!

samthebordercollie · 07/02/2023 17:27

I live in France and every doctor I see warned me against running so much, not because of knee issues but the risk of organ prolapse

bluesuitcase · 07/02/2023 12:45

I’m only a newbie to CG too. I started with epic beginners then moved onto iron.

I’m on day 20 of iron now and still loving it. I do it early in the morning and then do another half hour to an hour of random workouts when the DC are in bed, before I sit down - a mix of anything from fitness blender to Heather Robertson to Lucy W-R depending on what I fancy.

I stopped running regularly last year as I was worried about the possible impact on my body (knowing runners with knee issues etc). I never experienced any issues personally though. I did Jillian workouts alongside which I’m sure helped.

samthebordercollie · 07/02/2023 10:07

@ErrolTheDragon welcome! You'll get loads of advice here from posters with far more experience than me.
I'm a newbie too, only started CG end December but on my third programme already and seeing and feeling a lot of positive changes in my muscles! Plus moving around in general is so much easier now. I was a runner before, everyday, but CG is so much more helpful to someone my age (57). I've cut back running to 3 times a week only as it was placing too much stress on my body doing more.
@FlowerArranger I can't believe your are 70 with the weights you are lifting! Inspirational.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/02/2023 09:55

Hello! I'm thinking of trying Caroline Girvan after seeing so many positive remarks about her recently, but I don't know where to start. I made a thread specifically to ask about this as plonking into the middle of this long running thread seems like advice which could be useful to other newbies may get lost - I'd be very grateful for tips where to start and progress.

Wanting to get stronger - thinking of trying Caroline Girvan www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/4737459-wanting-to-get-stronger-thinking-of-trying-caroline-girvan

Thanks!

FlowerArranger · 07/02/2023 07:40

I'm pushing 70. There, I've said it. It'll happen to all of us - if we are lucky enough to live this long.

It is SERIOUSLY SCARY to watch some of my friends and acquaintances.

I spent yesterday doing all kinds of gymnastics with my granddaughter at the local playground. Her other grandmother sat on the bench, the entire time - 2 hours.

After we were done, my granddaughter and I had a race to meet up with her mum in the carpark. Other grandma kind of waddled. She is 9 years younger, but I wouldn't be surprised if I outlive her.

Not sure what my point is. Just sad.

BigButtons · 07/02/2023 07:25

@FlowerArranger it really was eye opening. I am guessing that 20% feel guilty for not doing enough. Seemed to me there were alot of excuses being made. I can't understand anyone that doesn't invest into their old age by keeping their body strong.

OP posts:
FlowerArranger · 07/02/2023 07:18

So sorry you're not feeling great right now, @BigButtons

I've had times like this. I just dial it all back and do lots of stretches and 'easy' stuff. You know, Lucy and Rebecca, plus a bit of Jake Dupree for fun. Some Popsugar fluff - just to keep moving.

Better than sitting on the sofa eating crap and boozing....... Not that you'd ever do that 😜

That thread I started on AIBU was an eye opener, wasn't it. 80% agreeing, but so much vitriol from the 20% 😳

BigButtons · 07/02/2023 06:57

@FlowerArranger that is very impressive. That routine is hard enough with no weights! My inner thighs so not need firming up any more though.
@Melassa I know what you mean. Most of my trousers are much tighter now. It used to bother me ALOT but I like the shape of my thighs now, I like that I can see different muscles so I have got used to it.
I like my upper body the most. I used to be a real straight up and down gal. No boobs, no waist. But now my shoulders are bigger it looks like I have some shape! Chest is still flat but things seem to sit higher😂
I gave up on the last week of iron- too boring and have restarted endgame. My hip seems better- I have been doing lots of massages on it so I might do the leg and bum days and keep the upper body until the elbow heals. I'll do yoga and some liss. I have ordered some elbow compression sleeves and am bracing it at night. That helps with the pain when I wake up.

OP posts:
Melassa · 06/02/2023 20:34

Yep, me too! I try to limit the weights now for lower body as I think I bulked up a bit too much before and my trousers were tight on the bum. I do like going heavier for upper body, but like you I see no point in straining and not managing proper form and having an annoying injury for months, which I did have these last months, albeit probably not down to CG.

FlowerArranger · 06/02/2023 19:31

I enjoy her workouts much more if the weights are 'lighter'

Amen, Sister 🤣

Having said that, I've recently been doing Lucy's Thighs & Glutes with 2.5 lb ankle weights. The leg circles are quite challenging, but I definitely feel my legs getting stronger!

BigButtons · 06/02/2023 17:45

@Melassa I occasionally go to 14kg for legs but not often- I can -but quite honestly my legs can build easily and I am happier sticking with 12-13 kg.
Upper body is very variable. I managed to get up to 13 for chest presses and rows- shoulders still no heavier than 10kg- they just won't do it and I don't want to injure them. Biceps, triceps, flies etc are mostly 5-6 kg. Over doing things weight wise has been the cause of my eventual woes I am sure.
I damaged a ligament in my hand doing makers last OCTOBER and it still gives me problems- but not as bad. I had to wear a brace for ages.
getting older sucks!

Hi @BigButtons sorry to hear about your health woes. You are wise to take it easy for a while. I had that persistent shoulder thing a few months ago where I couldn’t raise my arm above my head (I think it was an impingement?) but the months of inactivity except for using a mouse has helped it go away. Sometimes your body really needs a rest.

I guess you must be really fit and strong now, are you lifting much heavier weights? I got up to 14kg for legs and 10kg for upper body (chest and back only!) but there’s no way I could lift that now.

BigButtons · 05/02/2023 17:58

Hi @Melassa great to see you back! well done on getting back on the exercise wagon!
I have decided to do nothing but walking and yoga next week. If I keep pushing my leg with get worse and my ulnar nerve entrapment will get worse.
It's gonna be hard as hell though,I will really miss the weights, but my body is so easily tired atm, even walking makes me feel stiff. I'm going to do some Yoga with Kassandra sessions. Will still get to use the muscles but in a more gentle way.

OP posts:
FlowerArranger · 04/02/2023 19:52

Many of my friends are the same, @Melassa . It's quite scary!

One keeps tripping and falling over, but there's always a logical excuse reason for it. Nothing to do with the fact that she is overweight and totally unfit.

Another was diagnosed with a heart condition and just stopped moving.

One rarely leaves the house because she's afraid of Covid or being mugged.

Admittedly they are all a bit older than me, but even so...

My neighbour a few doors down is the same age as me but can no longer walk unless she holds on to her daughter's arm or a 4-wheel shopping trolley.

And so on. I look around me and I see people like this everywhere. Don't younger people see this and think "this could be me one day unless I do something"...

Melassa · 04/02/2023 19:39

Hi @FlowerArranger ! I’m using 6kg for most, going down to 4kg for things like flies and biceps. Although I did some sumo squats today with a single 14kg instead of 2x6kg. The first 2 sessions I could barely move the day after so I decided to take it easy. I’ll just maybe stick to low weights and up the speed for Heat, then if I’m feeling brave I’ll go back to Iron and slowly up the weights again.

i saw your AIBU. I agree with you, I was out with a group of friends the other week who were bemoaning aches and pains and saying they really should start doing something. I forwarded on the Bowflex plank plus a short Tabata thing to get started on but no one has even attempted them. One does go Nordic walking so is semi fit, one occasionally does yoga but none of the others do anything and just complain about menopause related twinges, as if it was inevitable and there’s no point fighting it. Frustrating!

FlowerArranger · 04/02/2023 19:10

Good to see you back, @Melassa !! I hope your job is going well. I agree that strength can seem to go quickly, but I've found that it also comes back quite quickly if one is disciplined enough to adhere to one of Caroline's programmes. What weights are you using?

I've done Heat at least 3x now, and Endgame and EPIC 3 a couple of times. I dip in and out of some of the other programmes. Maybe I'll do EPIC 1 or 2 again one day. Currently early days with Iron which, for some reason I had shied away from until now. I think the name is slightly scary, LOL! Still haven't done Fuel.

I also wonder what's happened to Caroline. I've heard some rumours about an upcoming App. But nothing from her since that one-off workout in September or October. I virtually never check her Facebook group these days. Too much bragging...

If you are looking to strengthen your core and abs, @bluesuitcase , I'd try:

Bowflex 3-minute plank (every day)
Rebecca Louise's Best Abs (with more challenging variations)
Caroline's Braced Abs and Core
Plus some of her other short abs sessions
And her 15 minute plank workout.

Melassa · 04/02/2023 18:52

Hello, just clocking in after absolutely ages. I fell off the CG wagon due to a job change, long commute and crazy hours, but I’ve decided to get back into it and am back on day 15 of Heat.

I’d been doing the odd plank plus maybe 10 mins squats etc. here and there but my fitness had really gone down and I’d lost a lot of strength (scary how it all goes to pot so quickly at this age!) so I’m now back to following a series, albeit mainly condensed in the weekend plus the odd day WFH. I’m even doing her HIIT and all the dreaded hip thrusts!

I’m doing lower weights but that’s fine, I need to get back into things slowly and Heat is quite fast moving so that works for me for now. I’m impressed by everyone who is doing her programmes for the second or third time! I’ve not seen anything new come out, is there anything in the pipeline?

bluesuitcase · 03/02/2023 08:24

Sorry about your hip/ thigh/ elbow issues, bigbuttons.

FlowerArranger, I alternate the first two exercises on that list during the ‘rest’ time in the CG workouts. I had no idea they were good for hips, I just carried on doing them when I stopped doing Davina workouts as I hadn’t seen them in Jillian workouts and I felt they made a difference to me. Fire hydrants have been abandoned though!

I did the Lucy Wyndham Read thighs and glutes last night - it’s tougher than all the other (standing) workouts of hers that I’ve tried, and I could feel the top/ side of my thigh in the night! I also tried a standing ab workout from fitness blender which I enjoyed. I’m already seeing slight definition coming back on my stomach, after just a week of epic beginners and a couple of weeks of iron, even though there isn’t much ab work in iron.

I think the lack of activity for many people nowadays will be a ticking time bomb. My grandparents didn’t ‘exercise’ but they were very active - and still are active, in their 90s. I dread to think what many of the younger generations will be like when they’re older. I just read a list of reasons on that thread - none of which are really barriers if you want to exercise (you can exercise for free at home barefoot, when kids are in bed - even if it’s just for 10 minutes because you’re tired).

BigButtons · 03/02/2023 07:13

Thanks so much @FlowerArranger I can't afford physio- well I might have to try and find the money. I think I have discovered the source of my elbow issue. I have a really tight and sore spot on my forearm just under the elbow. Gave it a very good massage yesterday.
The hips? I have a longer right leg- well I suspect it is that I have mild scoliosis- it runs in my family. I have sway back- this makes alot of ab work tricky for me if it involves leg lowers. Anyway, I digress, it is always my right leg and hip that will have issues, never my left. I am now aware that I am always externally rotating my right leg, whether standing, sitting or lying on the bed. This might well be causing chronic tightness. So the first thing is to be aware of my posture.
There is a really great youtube channel/guy called Tom Merrick and he has the best hip stretch routines I have ever come across.
Check out the V3 follow along hip mobility routine. Would love to know what you think. I must do it more often. I am sure it made a difference.

Thank u @flowerarranger. I've tried the epic beginners tonight and will have a look at the other suggestions too. There's so many to pick from.

I like kettlebell workouts so will try those ones too.

FlowerArranger · 02/02/2023 19:41

Just remembered a couple more, @BigButtons :

Hip thrusts (I know you love those...)
Mountain climbers ( in all directions)
Pigeon

I think Rebecca's Stretch workout is very good for hip flexibility:

Also, Dr Jo has a few videos on hip pain, e.g.:

Though checking with a physiotherapist whether all this is advisable might be a good idea, even if you have to go private. Just think of all the gym fees you've saved over the years!

I hope you can get this sorted 💐

CosieRotton · 02/02/2023 12:28

@samthebordercollie "I don't have time" is often another way of saying "it's not a priority for me"

I think that's both a bit true and a bit unfair ;) We do all have busy lives and it is often a struggle to juggle competing priorities especially when there is often too much to get through in a day. Getting fit again and starting exercise can be quite intimidating and it's definitely not easy; it's human nature that often we put off the thing that is hardest to do.

That said, I've managed to do the first 2 days of Epic Beginners and I ran home after dropping my baby at his nursery settling in session today. 💪
