How do you manage to exercise everyday?

Thewerera66it · 10/01/2019 19:47

I love running, which I do two - three times a week. I also do yoga once a week and tend to walk as much as I can during daily life. However, I am really envious of people who are physically able to exercise every day. Don't you get exhausted???? I would love to do some sort of CV exercise daily, but I know that if I did then my mental health would plummet.

I'm asking out of curiosity, really. I am happy with my exercise regime as it is, but often wonder where people's energy comes from!

I get changed into my workout gear as soon as I get home from work, prep dinner then do a 30 minute hiit workout with weights or kettle bells. Sometimes I'll just do cardio and depending on time I'll often do a 15 minute core or something else on top later in the evening. Am 46 and never felt fitter. Keeping my workouts short is what works for me, I get tired/bored after 30 minutes. Yesterday I did 3 20 mins workouts several hours apart, doesn't feel like much at the time but all adds up. I use YouTube, I could never find the time to get to a gym and have child at home (LP) so runnings out.

Really interesting thread. Placemaking for inspiration.

I don't believe in exercising hard every day.
I exercise really hard 4 times a week. Two e a week is martial arts which includes strength and conditioning work and I cycle and run once a week. But my cycle is a hard spin class or a long, hard outdoor road cycle. I'm active round about too.

areyoubeingserviced · 21/01/2019 07:09

I exercise everyday, but like others, I vary the exercise.

cheminotte · 14/01/2019 09:26

I mostly build exercise into daily life. So I cycle to work 4 times a week (only 2 miles each way but I take a scenic detour a couple of times a week to make it longer and more pleasant). I also cycle or walk with the dc to their activities (swimming and horse riding). Again, less than 5 miles but most people would drive that distance and my eldest dc is now confident to do one direction on his own (just ahead of me and younger dc) which is great for his self confidence. And then a family walk at the weekend, a solo run and am currently trying to do daily yoga.
Like pp if I go a few days without any movement I really notice it and would hate to have to drive to work every day for example.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/01/2019 20:58

I run 6 days and do circuits/bootcamp type thing as well. In the week the only way really is to get up and run at 6.30, which gives me 40 mins or so, and then be back to do the dc and get them ready etc once Dh leaves. Circuits are 2 evenings a week so I'll do that as well or instead of running. At the weekend i do a long run (10+ miles usually) and then take a day off.

My youngest Ds is finally at nursery now, which means I can now do longer runs in the daytime, and I'm hoping to switch to alternate days running. I'm looking forward to it! But I think I'll still exercise on the other days, but just swimming or weights at home.

NicoAndTheNiners · 13/01/2019 19:45

I don't have a problem with being tired but think I do a good mix of stuff.

So Monday is body balance and then an hour run.
Tues is body pump
Weds is a core class and then a spin class.
Thurs is combat and then aqua circuits
Fri is spin then body pump
Sat is bodybalance and then weights/treadmill
Sun is treadmill for 45 mins then body pump

Plus I cycle to work and back most days which gets me 14 miles of cycling a day.

I literally have to cycle past the gym to get to work so will often just stop there on the way home, do a class or two and then cycle the rest of the way home.

I did build up to doing so many classes.

veganrunnergirl · 12/01/2019 21:50

I run 6 days a week and try to do one other kind of exercise every day like a yoga class or swim. I don’t have children yet, I don’t watch TV and I have a short commute to work so I have time on my hands. I generally get up around 6 to run or go on my lunch break and drop into the yoga studio on my way home from work, meaning I’m back by 7.

sirfredfredgeorge · 12/01/2019 16:47

Once you're adapted to 20 minutes walking a day, 20 minutes walking a day doesn't increase your fitness, you can keep doing it forever - your body isn't going to waste effort making yourself fitter.

It's the same with those who are doing 5km running every day, their body is adapted to it, anything less makes them less fit.

The problem everyone has is moving from one state to another (so moving from the sofa to that 20 minutes walking, or from the walking to the running) as that requires you to build the fitness. Your body doesn't like that, so it takes time, or takes real effort fighting the "I don't want to do it today"

I've done something (either running or cycling, often both) every day for the last 15 odd months, my fitness isn't much better now than when I started, but I've barely had any days when I was sore or tired or difficult to get out. It's maintained (the pretty high) level of fitness and kept me alive mentally, to actually get fitter I'd need to do something more, or something different.

lljkk · 12/01/2019 11:33

I couldn't run 8-9 miles in one go think I'd rather die-.
I'm super slow, though, one hour near my maxHR only gets me 5.5-6 miles.
I had many anemia problems when I was vegetarian (17 yrs). Eating meat again was an excellent decision for me (heme iron is more bio-available).

WonderWoman2019 · 11/01/2019 22:30

OP you do loads and have nowt to worry about. I'd estimate you do more than 90-95% females of your age (I'm female your age btw). I exercise every day bar injuries and am getting fewer injuries by reducing my runs (was clearing up to 50k per week) and incorporating core training and upper body weight training substitute days. It's massively improved my running too!

ShowOfHands · 11/01/2019 22:16

If you're happy, healthy and fit, then there's no problem. You're doing what's right for you.

I exercise every day and need to for my mental health. I run 5-8k on weekdays and 10-12k on Saturdays. I also do HIIT, free weights, body weight stuff, cycling, climbing and walking. I feel sluggish and sleep poorly if I don't exercise.

FATEdestiny · 11/01/2019 22:09

I run every day. I have done for ages. At the moment I'm averaging over 10km every day.

Don't you get exhausted?

No, and I love it. I feel very lucky to have the time and if I had more time I would do more running each day!

How do you manage to exercise everyday?

I built up to where I am slowly. But from the outset I always exercised daily, just far less intense.

  • started with a short walk every day
  • became a 5km minimum walk every day
  • became a 5km minimum fast walk every day
  • started adding in small bits of running (via the C25K program), while keeping the overall distance as 5km by walking the rest
  • built up to 5km run every day
  • started doing 1 or 2 longer runs in the week, keeping my 5km run on other days

.... and so on. You get the idea.

If I had the time and resources (ie staff to look after the home and children so I had no other responsibilities in the day), I'd be quite happy devoting 8 hours a day to exercising!

Atalune · 11/01/2019 21:16

Sounds like you do plenty op!

ricepolo · 11/01/2019 21:07

I exercise around an hour each day and also walks loads. Have lots of energy.

I do cardio and strength training, alternating days. So kettlebells, dumbbells, HIIT. Doing just ‘pure’ cardio every day isn’t good. Mix it up. Add in strength training. There are so many benefits to it!!

Thewerera66it · 11/01/2019 21:05

Well, this is a typical average week:

Sunday - 1 hour run + upper body exercises.
Monday - 20min walk to /back work
Tuesday 20min walk to/back from work
30 min gym (sometimes!) or Outdoor run in summer + upper body exercises
Wednesday 20min walk to/back from work
Thursday 30 min walk to /from shops. one hour yoga class
Friday long run+ upper body exercises
Saturday nothing.

So, as I said, I'm happy with the amount of exercise I do. To the PP, I am a long term vegetarian, so probably do have low iron levels, but I can run 8-9 miles in a go and maintain good energy levels at the moment, so I think it's unlikely that I'm anaemic.

Of course you can exercise every day- but I would vary it

So for example if I run 3x a week, I would do a Zumba class on day 4, swim on day 5, 10 minutes HIIT on day 6 and then some Pilates on day 7.

There are some really gentle exercises to do on "rest" days, some yoga and Pilates moves for instance, and you can go for a walk or whatever of course.

We don't need to rest 100% any days. It's better to do a little bit often, but variety is key. If you run every day, for instance, the impact on your knees etc. Isn't great. Whereas if you mix it up it keeps any particular area becoming a problem

IJoinedJustToPostThis · 11/01/2019 19:43

Rest & recovery days are really important for preventing injury. Seriously. You're better off exercising 4 or 5 days a week than 7.

lljkk · 11/01/2019 19:40

Any chance you're anemic, OP?

Atalune · 11/01/2019 11:31

op. I do some CV for my heart health, some weights and strength and then some yoga type exercises.

MawkishTwaddle · 11/01/2019 08:45

OP yes, it’s great.

There are loads of 7 minute routines, and you can do just one if you’re short of time, or do a few if you’re feeling fit/virtuous.

I’m a week in (this time around) and I can already feel that my bum has toned up.

RedSkyLastNight · 11/01/2019 07:57

Perhaps it's the type of exercise you're doing? I walk to work every day - which I guess counts as exercise, and I really miss it if I don't.
I also go to the gym and lift weights. My body certainly couldn't cope with me doing that every day, but it would be happy for me to do something less intense in between.

So I guess the answer to your question is that people don't do "hard" exercise every day - they mix up different intensities and types.

Thewerera66it · 11/01/2019 07:55

if I have rest days I know that when I DO exercise I can work harder.
Whenever I have tried to do CV exercise daily I feel exhausted overall, which then makes me feel very low and tearful (I'm on long term AD, so have to watch my mental health).

As I've said, I'm happy with my level of exercise. It works for me and I am fit and healthy. But I can't help feeling a little wistful when I read of people enjoying daily workouts!

MysweetAudrina · 11/01/2019 07:53

I do a 7am yoga class Mon-Thur and a 10am Fri- Sun. I also walk the dog every day.

It is tiring getting up at 6am but it's worth it.

I did try a couple of bootcamp type classes at 7am but i found I was wrecked at work later on in the day.

The yoga is kinder and my body seems to like waking up for it.

I think the key is finding something your body responds well to and looks forward to.

FloofenHoofen · 11/01/2019 07:52

I don't do exercise everyday. I lift heavy and do a full body session so I'm pretty sore the next day, I wouldn't be able to do that everyday.
I do that every other day.

It doesn't need to be a daily thing if you're pushing yourself on the days you do go.
