London Marathoners 2018

Hi,

As the ballot results come out, thought I'd start a thread to discuss training plans and share the pain of getting up at stupid o'clock on a winter morning to get long runs done.

I was supposed to run in 2017 but my knee went kaput. Physio reckons it was just runners knee and said I needed to strengthen quads, glutes and core muscles (that are shot to pieces following two large babies) So I deferred my place until 2018.

I'm doing 30 Day Ab Challenge each night (made more challenging by husband "hilariously" making childish trump noises every time I sit up Hmm ) and mixing running up with Spinning and strength training at the gym .

Put loads of weight on while knee was knackered. Which is going to be the opposite of helpful for it so am on a diet to try and lose at least 2 stones (almost half way there now though)

Anyone found a decent 6 month training plan?

Xx

How did it go with the physio @picklesarnie? Fingers crossed they have some rehab exercises that will help. If the absolute worst comes to it you can always defer?

22km done yesterday for me in the most awful headwind. Felt wiped out afterwards and just wanted to sleep! My training plan feels quite intense but I need to stop looking ahead and just focus on the next session that I have to do. I still haven't booked my flights! EEKS that really must be a priority but I am a terrible procrastinator. As there is a 5hr time difference (I think?) my physio made a valid point that I need to try and do my long runs at this time if I can so that my body is used to it. I don't work Friday afternoons so tend to do them about 1pm which is probably as near to local Boston time as I can get it. I don't think I will be starting until 11am their time though as I will probably be in a slower wave.

Fuel wise I like - Tailwind, Chia Charge flapjacks, Torq gels and SIS gels

A short one today for me, 6x25second hill sprints. Felt lovely to be in and out the house in about half an hour but really feeling like I did something good for my running.

Had a chat with a friend of mine who has run the VMLM a few times over messenger this morning which really motivates me. It’s nice to get some enthusiastic and realistic advice/ support.

I’m going to buy some gels tomorrow to try on my LSR on Weds. I liked the feel of the dextrose tablets while I was running but I think I had a major sugar crash in the afternoon - I need to try something else to compare.

Hope everyone’s ok, I’m feeling excited today!

hillbilly · 14/01/2018 17:58

Sorry to hear that pickle.

I did 9m today which was fine but has left me with a painful arch (I have very low arches and run with orthotics). Have iced it and later massaged it so hopefully it will be fine.

LoudestRoar · 14/01/2018 10:02

Sorry to hear your news pickle Your health is more important, but I understand how disappointing it must be.
I was due to do 11 miles this weekend, but have been feeling sick, so not going to risk it.

ThursdayLastWeek · 14/01/2018 09:37

I did a guilt induced HIIT home workout last night and just ran 5k as fast as the hills and my dog would let me.
Beautiful morning out there.

ThursdayLastWeek · 13/01/2018 09:46

Oh pickle I’m sorry to hear that. Your knee is much more important than any marathon. How disappointing for you, I hope it’s nothing serious Flowers

I slacked off parkrun today, it’s absolutely hammering it down here! Maybe I’ll make up for it later, maybe I won’t who knows.

PickleSarnie · 13/01/2018 09:34

Hope everyone has a good weekend running!

I'm pretty sure that my knee isn't going to make it. Sad it was perfectly fine doing 3-4 times a week with runs up to an hour but went out on Saturday. Did 9 miles. Then (probably stupidly) did 3 on Sunday. Despite 9 miles being 3 miles more than my plan says. Then on Monday my knee was aching. Then on Tuesday went to a terrible spin class. The studio I used to go to was awesome. Leader board at the front, instructors were proper cyclists, head down, spin as hard as possible whilst trying to get up the leader board. Its been taken over and just reopened. It was like an aerobic class on a bike. Bouncing up and down, stopping to do handweights and really awkward push ups on bike. I hated it. And it was during the awkward push ups that I felt my knee twang. Rested Weds and Thurs. Did 80 mins on the treadmill on Saturday. And been spinning today.

It's not agony but I can't see it holding up as the training ramps up. Got a physio/trainer coming tomorrow to see if he can see what I'm doing wrong running wise. Don't know whether to quit now and go back to enjoying running up to 10k or push on.

Sorry for the self pitying moan.

Todays session was URGH! 5km warm up then 5 x 5 mins at 10km pace. Was so hard. Give me a long slow run anyday!!! Jelly babies are my fuel of choice! I still need to book my flights, am anxious about going to Boston on my own. It all started since having the DC before that this wouldnt have phased me!

ThursdayLastWeek · 12/01/2018 18:32

Oh yes, sports beans deffo next on my list to try.
I did Pilates last night with lots of hip strengthening exercises and a lovely lovely rest day today. God I love a rest day.

Going to my local 'fast' parkrun tomorrow.

hillbilly · 12/01/2018 18:29

Thanks Thursday. I'm doing dynamic Pilates twice a week which def makes me a stronger runner. Bought a second pair of trainers today and was advised to size up for the long runs and marathon day. Also got some gels and sports beans to test out 😀

Theonlyoneiknow · 11/01/2018 09:08

Tailwind is worth a try as fuel if you suffer from GI issues

ThursdayLastWeek · 11/01/2018 07:42

Morning hillbilly the more the merrier!

Yes Loudest I cross train, I have a weekly Pilates class that is excellent for low impact strength all over, and just plain body mindfulness really. I also try to do one fitness blender workout a week, sometimes HIIT, sometimes strength depending on how I feel or what I feel like doing.

I ran 14.5 miles yesterday, trying out dextrose tablets as my running fuel. The last couple of miles were tough, but it wasn’t that long ago I felt the same way after 8 miles so I guess I’m getting there!

hillbilly · 10/01/2018 22:54

Hello can I join in? Long time runner but it's been a bit sporadic the last few years. Only managed a few runs nov and dec but now I'm on a 16 week training plan. 9m last Sunday, 6m interval yesterday and 5m steady today. 3m tomorrow and then 10m on Sunday. I did a marathon 15 years ago Pre kids and never thought I would do another. Training with a long term running buddy who is also running LM although she is a faster runner than me so we may not end up together! Well done to everybody on the amazing training you are doing Smile

LoudestRoar · 10/01/2018 21:53

6.5 miles done today, 11 miles planned for Saturday. Was looking forward to a rest day, but remembered I have a fitness class booked in tomorrow morning.

Does everyone else cross train? I either doing a meta fiit class, or like tomorrow, a legs bum and tums class

farine · 09/01/2018 18:19

Oh forgot to say, I struggle without music or podcasts too.

My go to podcasts are serial, S-town, west wing weekly, kermode and Mayo film review and running commentary.

Also listen to talking books - Harry Potter is always worthwhile, and I also listen to various thrillers, although I find it hard to find ones which aren't all about women in peril and graphic nasty stuff. (Not the best to listen running on your own through the woods!)

farine · 09/01/2018 18:16

Happy New Year everyone. Hope everyone had a good Christmas and is getting into the rhythm of training now it's new year.

I managed a very slow 13 miles on Sunday, and foolishly rather than taking yesterday as a rest day thought I'd go do some body conditioning classes at the gym. Wow - I'm hurting today!!! That will teach me!

I've just just joined a running club as my new year resolution. I realised I was rubbish at doing intervals on my own, so thought I'd get extra motivation doing it in a group. First session is tonight and I am really nervous in case everyone else is super fit and skinny and fast and there's me the middle aged newbie lumbering at the back....

Managed to put 3lbs on over Christmas so doing dry jan to try and shift that plus the other stone and a bit I want to lose!

LoudestRoar · 09/01/2018 10:47

Theonlyoneiknow I'm also having 'This is a 5k, right?' printed on my back!

Theonlyoneiknow · 09/01/2018 08:27

I deffo need music (have bone conducting ones so can also hear external noise) I ran London in 2016 with normal headphones (only wore in one ear though!) the crowds and atmosphere are amazing. Remember to get your name printed on your top

ThursdayLastWeek · 08/01/2018 14:24

From what I understand there’s no need for headphones on the day...would miss out on all the atmosphere my friend said.

PickleSarnie · 08/01/2018 14:09

Thanks for the podcast recommendations. And I might sign up to Audible too - at least take advantage of the free month and see how it goes. I'm thinking that with really engrossing books, it will be a reason to get back out running just so I can find out what happens!

I'm slowly plowing through the 5th book of the Outlander series and, goodness me, it's dragging soooooo slowly (despite the previous 4 books being brilliant). So perhaps I won't choose that!

I'm not sure I'll listen to music/podcast on the actual day. Partly because I'm scared of the battery in my phone running out and then attempting to meet up with my husband at the end without a phone. I'll just have to run really fast so that doesn't happen! (

LoudestRoar · 07/01/2018 21:25

I'm listening to Harry Potter at the moment. Are you planning on listening on the marathon? I have the bone conductor headphones, so could still listen to everything going on around me.

timshortfforthalia · 07/01/2018 19:42

Picklesarnie - re podcasts I love running commentary and serial got me through my long runs last year.

LoudestRoar · 07/01/2018 19:30

Well done everyone! 10k here as well, then 11 miles due next weekend. I was going to wuss out after 3 miles, but I bumped into a friend and told her how long I was supposed to go, and she was out on her 7 miler, so I had to do it.

ThursdayLastWeek · 07/01/2018 14:10

Another 10k for me today.
Had arranged to do approx 9miles with a friend but it didn’t work out and couldn’t face doing that distance around home (it’s much hillier here than where we were going to meet) on my own so I compromised with myself.

And then my husband bought me a Mac Donald’s Grin

Theonlyoneiknow · 06/01/2018 20:41

10 miles yesterday. Was supposed to be 12 but it was torrential rain/hail/sleet/wind and I was soaked to the core and had raynards in my fingers. Was so grim I almost phoned someone to come and get me! My official plan starts on Monday. Have used a running coach again as I am so time poor and it was great last year to know exactly what I had to do when and at what pace. I gave up booze during training so that paid for it (although it wasn't expensive for what you get IMO!)
