We are a bit cut off in the designated forum so here's a shiny new thread to populate.

Hello to anyone that hasn't ventured over to The Weights Room but is lifting/resistance training.

JustGettingStarted, I agree I think it is a great idea to be in the main exercise section - why should weights and strength be sequestered out of sight when running, poledancing etc all have ongoing threads.

Strongbeatsskinny · 23/08/2017 20:24

Request a name change then for the weights room dumbells and deadlifts then pop over here now and again to let people know it's there

Ollivander84 · 23/08/2017 20:01

I'm here Smile
V v light weights for me as 13 weeks post spinal surgery. Am now using a trap bar and not doing standard deadlifts. Lifting 55kg on trap bar (I was at 130kg deads)

I have two weights session plans so I alternate them. That's all I'm doing at the minute plus stretches. Back to spin soon hopefully

RJnomore1 · 23/08/2017 19:57

Ha maid if you say your workibg sets are only 10-15 minutes in total it doesn't sound much!

Lazyi · 23/08/2017 19:46

I did a circuits class and practiced handstands this morning. Circuits included front squat, push press session, ow!

Lazyi · 23/08/2017 19:45

Findo, when you give percentages, what do you mean? Percentage of pb? Thanks!!

MaidOfStars · 23/08/2017 19:36

It doesn't sound much

Aye, you're right, sounds like a piece of piss, that HmmGrin

I have a coach who is a world record holder so she writes me a programme. I do two session for her a week:

15-20 minute warm up which is foam roller entire body and stretches.

Work up weights of Kettlebell drilling in one piece of technique e.g. Focus on breathing, or hand position

Then working sets which are usually no more than 10-15 minutes in total with breaks in.

Followed by a foam roller cool down.

It doesn't sound much but it's brutal and quite often the workibg sets are heavier than the weights I am using to compete.

In addition I do a really brutal Kettlebell fitness class, and an MMA/circuits pt, plus 2 barbell strength sessions (squat/ bench/row/tricep biceps then deadlift/military press/lay pulls /tricep bicep at present). If I can I do a metafit and a Thai boxing class and a short jog too. I'm just after competing just now though so I'm mostly eating chocolate on the couch.

NC4now · 23/08/2017 14:12

No, I don't do barbell squats for that reason. My SI joint pops out really easily!

Findo I'd definitely mention it to your friend. If she can afford to work with a PT I'd really recommend it. This time last year I felt like I was made of china and I felt really vulnerable physically.
Now I feel strong and capable, physically and mentally.

I love Romanian deadlifts!

I think it's good to bring weight topics back here because it doesn't get enough traffic. And I think sequestering it in another board reinforces the idea that weights are for other people (mostly men) and women are encouraged to stay out of the weight room. Women need weight training more than men, due to the increased risk of osteoporosis. .

FindoGask · 23/08/2017 10:53

Snap on the Romanian deadlifts, Maid - I did those this morning too! I was also thinking would be good to use this thread to record gym sessions.

Mine was:
Back squats @ 70% 5 sets of 10
RDLs @ 60% 5 sets of 8
Bench press @ 80% 5 sets of 5
Incline dumbbell press @ 80% 5 sets of 6
Assisted pull-ups 6 x 6

MaidOfStars · 23/08/2017 10:28

Findo My EDS weightlifting friend has a lot of physio input. She lifts well (and heavy) but really pays attention to any kind of pull/tweak (rather than power through). I don't think she barbell squats because her hips are very loose. She deadlifts in a Smith machine too, to add stability.

MaidOfStars · 23/08/2017 10:24

Just out of the gym. I did:

  1. Split squats with my back leg coming right under my body (usually, it's further back).
  2. Romanian deadlifts + push ups.
  3. Pull ups + horribly heavy ball slams.

For the Romanian deadlifts, I used a mixed grip for the first time. It felt odd but I'll get used to it.

FindoGask · 23/08/2017 10:23

NC4 That all sounds great. I'll maybe tentatively suggest weight training to my pal; I know she has been frustrated by feeling like she can't do anything.

Hurray for deadlifting! I agree, light weights are the way to go - for anyone I'd say, whilst you learn the movement and tweak your form. There's so many things to remember at the same time.

FindoGask · 23/08/2017 10:12

Strong - I don't think there's enough traffic in the Weights Room to justify it. And probably half the threads (no joke) on there are questions about weight loss, rather than lifting weights.

Strongbeatsskinny · 23/08/2017 09:53

Confused on this thread based on the fact the weights room was actually created because it was requested on here the exercise bit. People wanted the separate section because of the weight training ones kept getting lost amongst the running swim and Jillian Michael threads that were on here in abundance.

NC4now · 23/08/2017 08:48

When I say stopping if it's hurting, it always hurts, I mean joints rather than muscles. They are meant to burn!

NC4now · 23/08/2017 08:47

Depending on how I am we sometimes vary it, so the week before my period, when my joints are looser we'll do more machines than free weights, but mostly it's a case of watching how things are going and stopping if it's hurting.
Tend to go for lots of reps, increasing weight gradually,

I've just started deadlifting 😃 I've only just built up the stability to manage it, and I'm only on a really low weight, but I love it! I've built up to it with lots of split squats, hip thrusts etc.

I do get properly knackered after a good weights session, and sometimes have a little sleep after, but it's a really satisfying kind of tired.

MaidOfStars · 23/08/2017 07:44

RJ I was referring to kettlebell sport. What's a typical training session?

Findo I also have a EDS/hypermobile friend who weightlifts.

OP posts:
FindoGask · 23/08/2017 05:07

That's really interesting, NC4now - I hadn't heard of strength training as a way to manage EDS. I don't have it but a friend of mine does and I think she had ruled out being able to do much of any exercise. Are there any lifts that you specifically avoid? Do you train with more of a volume or intensity focus or a bit of both?

RJ - I spent a while watching youtube videos of kettlebell sport last night - bloody hell! So inspiring. It does look mentally very tough. I love kettlebells too but in an opposite way to you I use them to support my barbell training. I love the combination of strength and endurance in kettlebell sport. Do you compete?

NC4now · 23/08/2017 04:08

Findo I have EDS/hypermobility, so I'm very prone to injury. It's one of the main reasons I do strength training.
My joint stability is massively improved.
I still can't run. My knees can't take it and I don't enjoy it, but I amaze myself with what I can do, and how few injuries I get these days by comparison.

RJnomore1 · 22/08/2017 22:29

What for maid - for kettlebells or for strength training in the gym?

MaidOfStars · 22/08/2017 22:16

RJ So, what weights do you lift? How many reps would you perform in one section?

OP posts:
plank · 22/08/2017 21:57

Oh placemarking!!

RJnomore1 · 22/08/2017 21:49

It's very mentally challenging.
