New year C25K. Anyone care to join me?

CaptainBraandPants · 01/01/2017 08:44

So, new year, new me, etc, etc.
I've done C25K before, then a program up to 10k.
Although I found lots of it hard, it did wonders for my health and fitness and also for my mental health.
But, then I stopped. I can't even remember why now.
So, I'm back at the beginning. The advantage I have this time is that I know I can do it as I've done it before.
It's pissing it down here, but I'm going to go and do it anyway. Grin
Anyone else?

Hi, can I join too please? I did my first run yesterday and this is my second attempt to do it. Although I am not overweight, I am horribly unfit, so this isn't going to be easy.

Ive just completed D1 W1 and im surprised at how ok I feel! I felt like I couldnt run anymore and then my phone would bing and tell me to start walking. I felt like i would be embarrassed but once i started i didnt care what i looked like. I just put my phone in my zip pocket of my fleece and used the headphones that came with my phone and they stayed in fine as i ran round.

cuntspud · 03/01/2017 13:26

Haha I was wondering what to do with my phone, I thought I'd asked enough questions already thoughBlush

EmilyDickinson · 03/01/2017 13:24

D3 W1 done today. I felt a bit achy this morning, those unused muscles protesting I think.

I have a clear armband that I put my phone in and wear earphones to hear the instructions. Mine are just the standard Apple ones but don't fall out. You can get ones for runners that sort of hook round the ears though. I also have a wristband with a small zip pocket to put my house key in. I hate having to carry things or having them jingling round in pockets.

I haven't done a park run but have gone along to support a friend a few times. At our local one there are people who walk it or who only run part of the way so I don't think that you necessarily have to be able to run a full 5 k to take part.

ChocolateRaisin · 03/01/2017 12:39

Hi, can I join please? I did my first run yesterday.

I love running and find it the best thing to keep my weight down and mind and body feeling healthy along with weight training and a bit of hiit. I was doing really well last year with my running, fell pregnant and was then to nauseous to run or exercise. I had a miscarriage unfortunately and the process was long and drawn out, meaning I couldn't exercise for quite a long time and then when I did it made me feel horrendous rather than good, so I stopped and then really struggled to start again as I was so disheartened that something I used to love so much I wasn't able to do.

Anyway, sorry for the waffle! I ran yesterday for the first time and then did a small workout after and felt amazing afterwards, so I'm determined to get back to it! I'm planning to run regular park runs once I'm back up to 5k again. I would love to train for a 10k as well if it all goes to plan.I have a treadmill due to a back issue that I have which I will use on an incline to get me started and then get out and about once I'm running about 3k.

Good luck everyone!

Greenfingeredfun · 03/01/2017 11:21

Stupid question here but.. I'm running holding my phone so I can follow the instructions of when to walk/run on my app. Is this what I'm supposed to do? Do your earphones not fall out when listening to music? Blush

jesstar · 03/01/2017 10:59

Yes, also worried about the cold! I'd like to keep up with regular park runs if I manage to get to the end of this program, but not sure I will have the confidence to join in.

For those who have done this before, did you lose weight during the 9 weeks or just tone up a bit/feel fitter? Am hoping to lose some weight but not sure it will be enough running 3 times a week. Trying to eat healthier as well but I struggle to keep away from the Bad Food.

beanhunter · 03/01/2017 08:36

Crikey I ache this am! I have a brill merino top that I wear in this weather. Keeps me toasty. Will have to try and go tomorrow am before work
But worried how icy that will be!

EmilyDickinson · 02/01/2017 22:02

D2 W1 completed today, yay! This time the sun was shining which was nice.

I'm using a C25K app from ZenLabs. It doesn't have music so I've downloaded Now That's What I Call Running to listen to. It does tell me when I'm halfway though so I run away from home and turn around when it tells me I'm halfway through.
At the moment I'm wearing gloves and a hat in addition to the usual running gear as it's quite cold and I'm walking more than half the time.
So far so good. Hope to do D3 W1 tomorrow. Well done to everyone who's decided to take on C25K. Is anyone else hoping to do a 5k Park Run by the end?

SweetPeaPods · 02/01/2017 21:54

Can I join?
Hoping to go for my first run tomorrow but would have preferred to have got rid of this stupid virus that's not going.
What app is everyone using? Will have a look at the podcasts too.

cuntspud · 02/01/2017 18:45

Thankyou for the linkSmile
I suppose it's better to have layers to remove, I can always tie the hoody round my waist if I'm too hot.

waiting4inspiration · 02/01/2017 18:28

Sorry, meant to include a link www.nhs.uk/Livewell/c25k/Pages/get-running-with-couch-to-5k.aspx

waiting4inspiration · 02/01/2017 18:25

I'm also using the NHS C25K podcasts. There's different music for each segment of running/walking - five minutes brisk walk warm-up, then 8 x 60 seconds running/90 seconds brisk walking, finally five minutes brisk walk cool down. I quite liked the music and the time went quite quickly.

I reckoned that I'd probably cover a distance of around 2km so pre-planned a circular route on mapometer.com. The main roads around me are fairly busy and difficult to cross (the pelican crossing can take a minute and a half before the lights go red for traffic) and the quieter estate roads are full of learner drivers so I chose a route which had me mostly running in a large loop. Boring but meant I avoided having to stop and start to cross roads. I ended up having more than a 5 minute cool down walk back and began to get a bit cold even with brisk walking, so definitely wrap up warm.

cuntspud · 02/01/2017 18:06

Thanks,
I'm not worried about how I look, I'll be a big sweaty mess 10 minutes in anywayBlush
I wasn't sure temperature wise really, I see some people in shorts/tshirt and some in light jackets and hats/gloves so thought I'd go somewhere in the middle!
I'll check the nhs podcasts out then, I had a brief look yesterday but could only find some with really irritating "motivational" voices and commentary!

jesstar · 02/01/2017 17:45

I think you can just wear what feels comfortable. I wear a loose T-shirt and hoodie in this cold weather. And some unflattering joggers. I try not to worry how I look; I don't have the confidence to wear the tight lycra outfits that the other runners seem to look so good in. Too wobbly at the moment :(

I have the NHS C25k podcasts, it was ok and glad I didn't have to worry about the timing. It would be nice to have a halfway 'marker' to remind you to turn around though, although the extra steps on the way home can only be a good thing.

cuntspud · 02/01/2017 15:48

Can I join please?
I've never been a runner and although I'm not overweight I'm very unfit!
Hoping to start Wednesday eveningGrin
I've downloaded the app but I've seen a lot of people are using podcasts, do you mind sharing which ones please?
Also, I'm a bit unsure what to wear on top. I've brought running shoes, leggings and a sports bra, I was going to wear a loose top and a light hoody, does this sound about right?

savouryandsweet · 02/01/2017 14:52

Can I join please?

I'm doing w1r1 today. Have done it once before, about 4 years ago. Hated it at first but I remember that happy rush of feeling fit and energetic as I got into it.

I'm now 6 stone heavier than I was when I did it back then Blush so I'm going to take it slow today.

waiting4inspiration · 02/01/2017 14:41

W1D1 done today. Lovely sunny day helped the minutes go quickly. I enjoyed the podcast too, and by following the instructions of when to walk and when to run I finished feeling I'd had a good run rather than feeling I should have pushed harder. Already looking forward to the next session.

User - one thing I learned on my many re-starts is that people don't really pay attention to what others look like when they're out. Don't let the thought of what you think other people think put you off!

Lily hope you feel better soon - dealing with stress and mental health issues was the reason I took up running in the first place; i'm facing other health demons at the moment and the 30 minute switch off during my run today was the best 30 minutes I've had for a while.

Lilybensmum1 · 02/01/2017 13:51

Can I join I'm starting for the 3rd time!!! Really need to do is for my mental health I love the feeling of running, can't remember why I stopped now. I will start next Monday as not feeling to great at the moment.

Well done to everyone who has started I'm so envious and good luck to those due to start.

user1460571583 · 02/01/2017 13:39

Hi can i join please, im going to start c25k tomorrow afternoon after I finish work and my kid's will be back at school. Feeling nervous, especially about what I will look like but I'm determined to do it. I lost 3 stone 3 years ago and then got crippling anxiety and put it all back on. My anxiety is loads better now and i think running will help me finally get rid of it once and for all.

CaptainBraandPants · 02/01/2017 11:42

bean definitely. Have a good run.

We are allowed to feel smug, that's one of the benefits of doing it. Grin

Can I join? Went on my first run today, went quicker than I thought it would and I felt good afterwards. Hope I don't lose the motivation over time. Good luck all!

grannycake · 02/01/2017 09:13
