I want to ask MN to create a topic for yoga. Would you be interested to share ideas, tips, and achievements in our practice on a Yoga topic?

I am still interested. I have signed up for Tai Chi classes. Recovering from back injury so want to try something gentle before I attempt yoga. Have we a Yoga thread yet?

gingeroots · 02/06/2015 14:39

marking place ,interested .

simonettavespucci · 01/06/2015 23:16

Can I join too please? Cote - bikram yoga made me black out, so I would approach with caution, personally, though I know people do get addicted.

CoteDAzur · 31/05/2015 11:30

Justine said that they would work on creating a topic for us and let us know when it is done. Hopefully any time now?

Jack - Welcome Smile I thought you might like to know about an upcoming yoga topic, since you had previously posted about yoga on MN.

Hi all - another yoga enthusiast here! Very new to it, started with a body balance class about 2 years ago and when the teacher was ill and a yoga teacher took over I was hooked. I went to a class weekly until my job situation changed, but I've now found the same teacher at a local gym and I try to make her class when I can (it's only once a week). She does something called Sun Power yoga, and she is an excellent teacher, very knowledgeable but also has a sense of humour! My practice is a bit erratic (i.e. not done regularly), but when I was doing it regularly last year I loved the way my mind and body felt, and I was amazed at the strength you need - it's certainly not the happy clappy exercise I had envisaged.

Like totallypearshaped I'm interested in yoga for the menopause, specifically hot flushes. Am also interested in any online videos, or dvds as I can't go to multiple classes per week due to cost.

And I think it's a great idea to have a separate thread - I see that Justine said we could have one, have I missed it or is it not set up yet?

Jacksmania · 31/05/2015 03:09

So sorry, I'm late to the party as usual. CoteDAzur, thank you so much for your PM, I wasn't ignoring you, im just never on MN anymore other than Woolly Hugs threads. But this might just lure me back!
I think a yoga topic would be fab :) :) :)

Two excellent books to help women with every stage of their lives, including menstrual cycles... The second is probably a bit more accessible (written by a Brit, rather than an Indian) and cheaper.

Any yoga teachers on here?

Any recommendations for a sequence for example for menopausal symptom alleviation? Are they the same for period / "moon" poses? tIA

TalkinPeace · 28/05/2015 14:34

Cote
I'd love to have a go at Hot Yoga am amused that the name Bikram is being dropped by all the classes after his arrest
the heat allows your muscles to stay looser for longer

BUT
apparently it can be a bit tough on those of us old enough to be prone to hot flushes!!!

SwivelHips · 28/05/2015 12:38

Cote all I can say is that it is so popular in our small town. It has a regular clientele that go virtually every day and a large chunk of them twice a day. It has been soooo popular. We have proper yogis that now love the heat. Most feel that they can go much deeper and have increased flexibility. I'd add ours isn't a Bikram studio, that's not for everyone.
Give it a go. The first few times you might hate it until you become acclimatised. Worst case scenario is you stay in child's pose for an hour Wink

StillaChocoholic · 28/05/2015 09:37

I started doing yoga about three weeks ago so I am a very new newbie but I'm loving it so far. Very excited that there's going to be a whole topic dedicated too it. Great idea Cote!

CoteDAzur · 28/05/2015 08:45

A yoga studio recently opened nearby and they are offering hot yoga for the first time in our little town. Can't decide if I should try it. Probably not, as I'm always the one asking for a window to be opened at yoga & putting A/C on in the gym. Why is yoga at 40C supposed to be a good thing? There is conflicting info online.

I have lulu lemon 5mm thick non slip mat, would definitely recommend for the hot room. It is also v non slip in general although it's heavy so personally I wouldn't bother outside hot room. I like tree mat but I guess that's the same as the Eco mat.

TalkinPeace · 27/05/2015 21:43

sethrogen
I have not, but a friend who is a dance teacher has and said it was a blast as a one off but not for year in year out.

If I want to do that sort of thing I mess about on the TRX up in the gym

MargoReadbetter · 27/05/2015 20:59

I haven't got a mat yet. I want something thick but still easy to roll and carry around. There's a new class nearby on a Wed evening, I feel inspired to start going again.

daisychain01 · 27/05/2015 17:24

changing

daisychain01 · 27/05/2015 17:24

I have always used one of those neoprene type non-slip mats (the purple 'bobbly' ones) - It is reasonably thick (not the skinny ones you get in the supermarkets) and seems to have lasted well. No signs of wear yet after about 6 years of twice x weekly classes

So should I consider an ecomat instead? I just haven't ever seen anyone use one yet, but open to changin.

I do have to come off my mat onto the wooden floor, for any standing balances because the sponginess of my mat is super-comfy on my knees, but makes me wobble around like a weeble!

CoteDAzur · 27/05/2015 16:45

I can't decide if I should get a non-slip yoga mat or a mat towel that will serve the same purpose.

Mat towel would be easier to carry & wash once I'm home, but the ones I've found are microfibre which feels unpleasant to the touch imho.

Have any of you tried aerial yoga? I do Pilates but really fancy giving it a go. Just a bit worried I'll end up landing on my head!

DepthFirstSearch · 27/05/2015 13:41

Oh yeah, I go through two ecomats a year; but since they are biodegradable and I still find them the grippiest ones, I don't mind Grin

TalkinPeace · 27/05/2015 13:34

My ecomat has just become part of a garden path.
It was great for the first couple of years but then it started to shed bits of jute onto my clothes and now the rubber has gone brittle : but it will be great in the vegetable garden

I just bought myself a manuka mat - is lovely

DepthFirstSearch · 27/05/2015 13:07

Hello!

50 DepthFirstSearch

I use an Ecomat; the jute in it makes it super rough and grippy.

Wilding · 27/05/2015 13:00

Yay, what a great idea! Just started doing yoga again a couple of months ago and am completely hooked.

Going back to the slippy mat topic, I can second the Lululemon mat recommendations - tried one out for the first time last week and it was completely non-slip, even in quite a hot studio! Normally I just take a hand towel along to put at the top of my mat as I get really really sweaty hands doing yoga and I don't feel like I get any benefit out of down dog if I'm constantly readjusting to stop myself falling flat on my face!
