Mumsnet at the Marathon

AmyMumsnet · 11/04/2014 12:07

Don't worry folks, we haven't suddenly turned into superwomen and made a last-minute entry into the London Marathon.

We will, however, be there on the day to show our support for the largest single annual fundraising event in the world - and the people that have put in months of training to take part and raise money for a good cause.

We'll be providing live coverage from the Marathon on our Twitter page @mumsnettowers.

Let us know who you're supporting and which charity they're running for (or indeed if you're participating!) and we'll give them a shout-out on our Twitter feed during the big day.

I'll be there supporting MrAmyMumsnet who is running to raise money for Target Ovarian Cancer. Do come and say hello if we cross paths.

Best of luck to you all!

There are no tricks to winning a place. Once the deferred places have been removed from the total, then the elite and GFA places, the club places and the charity places, what's left is allocated on a random basis to whoever is in the ballot. I've applied 10 times in the ballot and only once got a place (under the old "5 consecutive rejections and you get an automatic place" rule). I sometimes think the hardest bit about the London Marathon is actually getting a place,

CMOTDibbler · 12/04/2014 21:57

The ballot is run such that there are a few weeks to put your application in, and then people are chosen by random. You can also get a place by having run a 'good for age' time at another marathon, or by signing up for a charity place where the charity has bought the entry and then you commit to raising at least a required amount

Joules68 · 12/04/2014 21:54

Im not sure how the ballot works either!

Burmahere · 12/04/2014 20:03

So if I were to enter the ballot for next year are there any tips as to how to try and win a place? Think it opens at midnight on 22nd April but guess places go within hours? Is it really just the luck of the draw?

Am so inspired by you all and will be watching and cheering tomorrow (only via the telly unfortunately).

KristinaM · 12/04/2014 19:14

Well done piggy, I hope you have a great run.

But remember not to eat jelly babies unless you have done so in training. Even super dooper all singing all dancing mumsnet jelly babies .

PiggyPlumPie · 12/04/2014 18:55

Joules am getting a bit nervous now but also very excited!

Will look out for you Amy and your jelly babies

AmyMumsnet · 12/04/2014 16:22

It's so inspiring to hear all of your marathon runners' stories. Everyone is running for such great causes. We'll try tweet about as many of you as possible.

It's only going to be me attending tomorrow but I'll look out for mumsnetters in the race and on the sidelines (not just for the jelly babies and champers of course!).

Make sure you remember to bring plenty of water and suncream tomorrow - looks like the sun will be shining on us all day.

Good luck with all your last minute preparations!

Very best of luck to all the runners. And have a great day supporters. We've been (with the kids) for the past 2 years to support various family members. It's a great fun day out. And incredibly inspiring.
Looks like the weather will be kind to supporters again

Joules68 · 12/04/2014 11:47

sirzy just go for it and enter! If you get a place then it's meant to be! I'm not procrastinating any longer. Life is too short.

This thread makes me want to sponsor all the charities!

piggy how are you feeling? Nervous?

PiggyPlumPie · 12/04/2014 09:16

I'm running!

Will be wearing an orange vest for World Child Cancer .

Raising money for the MN Woolly Hugs charity.

FieryChipotle · 12/04/2014 07:51

My husband is running for Meningitis UK. He will be in orange with tiger stripe legs!

Sirzy · 12/04/2014 06:55

Maybe joules! Would take a vast improvement on my current ability to do it but I am seriously considering entering the ballot for next year.

Burmahere · 11/04/2014 23:46

Good luck to everyone taking part on Sunday!!

Alambil · 11/04/2014 23:45

I'm going too - where are MN going to be stationed?

going to be right by Tower of London - if we get the 7 30 train from home, that is!!

going to take jelly babies too; always popular!

I'm cheering on a MNer - not sure she's still around these parts, but she's running to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK

KristinaM · 11/04/2014 23:39

Such inspiring stories !

I wanted to wish everyone, runners and supporters, a safe and successful marathon

Joules68 · 11/04/2014 23:25

Next year sirzy?

Sirzy · 11/04/2014 22:57

Good luck to everyone running. I would love to run this eventually!

abitofanangrybird · 11/04/2014 22:55

To the wonderful Mumsnetter who has a name starting with K - I just wanted to say thank you for your kindness and to let you know that my mum is really touched at the gesture ??

CMOTDibbler · 11/04/2014 22:08

Good luck to all those running. The VLM always makes me think of my friends brother who was diagnosed with terminal cancer just 4 days after running it, defying the odds to hang on for another 18 months.

MandSrant · 11/04/2014 21:23

I will be at mile 17 to support my cousin Ian Evans who is running for the National Deaf Children's Society. We are all very proud of him and I know he is excited and nervous!

Good luck to all the runners!

orangeflutie · 11/04/2014 20:29

Hi I'm running for The Lullaby Trust in memory of my son James.

I'm looking forward to it but I'm nervous tooSmile

hillbilly · 11/04/2014 19:49

Hamid, the PE teacher from Oxford Gardens Primary School, West London is running with his brother for Cancer Research and has raised LOOOAAADS of dosh!

Jennster · 11/04/2014 19:13

I am running for Target Ovarian Cancer in number 22868. I am wearing my light blue club vest (not the purple target one) as I got a place through my club. My aim is 3:45.

tattychicken · 11/04/2014 18:54

My brother, Andy Jenn, whose wife is a Mumsnetter. Running it to raise money for Mind, and in memory of his dear friend Darrim who sadly took his own life several years ago.

Andy doesn't have a history of long distance running. He is an ex rugby boy and carries the injuries to prove it. He runs his own business and has three young children, so fitting in the hours to run has been tough.

He was devastated by the loss of the lovely Dar, and hopefully the money he has raised, £2k+, will help others avoid the same pain. Even just a little bit helps. Wine

Mitchy1nge · 11/04/2014 18:32

my new garmin is running it on a friend's wrist, not for charity

hope he doesn't fall over and break it Confused
