Garmin watch thingy for running

WhomessweetWhomes · 30/12/2013 20:06

I may have posted about this before, ages ago, but does anyone have one of these for running? And if so would you recommend it? I have tried various apps but find them annoying and inaccurate. Also I think I'd find a watch easier to look at while running.

Oh.....I've name changed from SarahJessicaParker!

MrsFrankTurner · 05/01/2014 21:19

Oh how fab! I haven't got mine yet as I spent some of my Christmas money on crochet stuff! But I'm saving up so when I get one I'll join the mn groupSmile

Mitchy1nge · 05/01/2014 21:10

I made one with a (probably stolen) picture of a cougar in the snow, it's called Team MN Connection.

Mitchy1nge · 05/01/2014 14:02

I don't think anyone has made one yet, I will pm you though.

one of the poorly people in my house has chickenpox, yuck

EauRouge · 05/01/2014 09:18

How are you feeling today, Mitchy?

Can someone please PM me the name of the Garmin MN group, I can't find it.

Mitchy1nge · 04/01/2014 15:25

well done!

I am slow today, lying down with a sore throat and a tiny bit higher than usual temperature after loads of people asking me how come I never get ill Hmm

WhomessweetWhomes · 04/01/2014 15:19

Will check it out. Just did my first run with it, in the grim drizzly rain. Worked great. Mitchy1nge, you can't be as slow as me! I would never be able to do a marathon, unless I walked it!

OP posts:
Mitchy1nge · 04/01/2014 14:14

yeah let's do that

not that I understand what the groups even do, there's no chat for example but you can 'like' or comment on one another's activities which is not all that thrilling

think it might help with accountability maybe?

EauRouge · 04/01/2014 14:02

Could we set up a Mumsnet runners group or can't you make your own groups?

Mitchy1nge · 04/01/2014 13:46

oi, you might want to do a marathon and be slow like me - it could easily take me 5 hours or more SAD BUT TRUE

on garmin connect just look under explore then people (I think), I didn't have the sense to make up a nickname because I thought it was only for me and my helpful coach/guru/friend but can exchange details by pm maybe? or if you explore groups and find UKMFP there should be a few - you just have to set your thing to share details with your connections and groups

WhomessweetWhomes · 04/01/2014 12:14

It arrived today! Looking forward to using it... . Did you order one in the end SarahJessicaParker? Mitchy1nge, how do you make friends on Garmin Connect? I haven't worked it out yet!

I went for lime green for my Forerunner 10 Smile.

WhomessweetWhomes · 31/12/2013 16:05

Only 5 hours? Oh no - I never run for fewer than 7 Wink. I think I'll manage...

OP posts:
Mitchy1nge · 31/12/2013 11:25

that's why I want the purple 220, most of my running stuff is orange and they make one of the best combinations I think

the FR10 only has a 5 hour training life though, I really wish I'd known this when I got mine

Lazysuzanne · 31/12/2013 11:22

Obviously colour is the most important criteria! Wink

WhomessweetWhomes · 31/12/2013 11:18

Thanks everyone! Lazysuzanne, that link was really useful. The guy is umm... very thorough Grin! Have just ordered a Forerunner 10. I don't need one with too many whistles and bells. Plus it comes in a nice purple colour which goes with some of my new running kit .

I've got the Forerunner 10 which is the most basic model. It does everything I need; pace, time, distance, calories, splits, and on Garminconnect you can keep track of your progress and look at geeky charts of pace and elevation change.

I'm up for Garminconnect friends, I haven't got any. How do I find the group?

Lazysuzanne · 31/12/2013 01:10

this guy talks about garmins....at great length!

GhettoPrincess001 · 31/12/2013 01:06

I've had 2 Garmin 201's. Both excellent. My last one gave up the ghost. I'd buy another one on e-bay or Amazon but they won't ship overseas where I live.

The modern ones are a bit to 'gadety' if that makes any sense.

Lazysuzanne · 31/12/2013 00:59

I wish I'd got one of these instead of the garmin, my phone tracks distance speed and elevation perfectly adequately and this would be a better heart rate monitor:

(apologies for going off topic Whome, I know you're looking for a gadget with different functions to the Mio thingy)

DramaAlpaca · 31/12/2013 00:05

I got a Forerunner 10 for Christmas. I only wanted a fairly basic version & it seems to have everything I'll need. Haven't used it yet as the weather has been horrible. DH got it for me. He thought it'd inspire me to start running again - I hope he's right!

Lazysuzanne · 31/12/2013 00:01

I have a 210 and I like it, mostly I got it to use on the treadmill with the hr monitor, only the hr thing has been playing up of late (might be battery)

I want on of those new hr monitors with no chest strap, but I don't want to be an early adopter.

I love the garmin graphs, especially the swim graphs :o

Mitchy1nge · 30/12/2013 21:29

oh come on

it might incentivise you! I started a group on there for MFPers from the UK - admittedly it is quite a shit group because I don't know what it does, apart from show whatever everyone else has been up to, but it's sort of nice snooping on other people's activities, not going through it alone etc

wombat22 · 30/12/2013 21:25

Get together on Garminconnect? But then you'll see that my garmin has been in the drawer for months I've not had time to walk run for a while Blush

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 30/12/2013 21:17

I don't have a Garmin, but have a cheaper version. It cost £50 from Sweatshop. It's make is Soleus. It tells me how far I've run, my pace, speed and calories burned. I can also see each mile statistic too. Perfect for my needs it just doesn't have the Garmin name. I'd say it is just as good, but I've never used a Garmin. Though I do love it.
