nextphase and all the other newcomers - welcome, and enjoy!! englishteacher very best of luck with the prep for the half marathon. I think 13 miles is beyond me... BUT today I did my first 5k - Race for Life!

I made it all the way round without walking, and finished in just over 34 minutes - slow but steady.

Going to have a rest for the rest of the weekend then back out running one morning next week. Might sign up for another 5k later in the summer...

englishteacher78 · 01/06/2013 18:39

Ah, flat! a word of warning to people who really get into running. The people who put out race profiles have a different concept of flat to normal people. I ran a relatively local 10km last September which is called flat - before the first km was over there was a very steep down and uphill!

wizzler · 01/06/2013 18:24

Cinammon... glad to hear your dog news
Debtherat... it helps a lot hearing your story...you sound a lot like me... I am plodding on to w4R1 ( Planned for tonight after BGT!)
Just come back from a week in Norfolk., Took my trainers... it was blissfully flat!

englishteacher78 · 01/06/2013 18:19

Long run for me tomorrow - hoping for somewhere between 10km and 10 miles - got a half marathon next weekend.

It's one of the reasons I have to listen to music when I'm running, otherwise I can hear the sound of my heavy breathing!

I'm hoping to go out for a run tomorrow. My cold is almost gone, and I'm itching to get back to it. At the same time, though, I'm scared that I'm going to injure myself again. Confused

nextphase · 01/06/2013 18:05

Ohh Heck. Down loaded podcast, and DH knows he's on his own after they boys are in their PJ's. The fact that DS1 won't go to sleep til late 'cause DH let him sleep for 90 mins on the sofa won't be my problem!

Wish me luck - and if any of you see a beetroot puffing round about 8pm, give me some encouragement!

BelaLug0si · 01/06/2013 17:58

Nextphase there's a page with a description of each week for the NHS podcasts here

Thank you all for inspiring me (dedicated lurker!) to start the plan a couple of months ago. Reading your progress and run reports helped me see I could try it too.
Just finished week 8 run 3 this morning and covered my 5th running 5km I've cheated slightly and decided go keep going to 5km after 25 mins on the second run of week 7. This was because the target distance was getting close and wanted to see how much longer it would take. Very pleased that so far it's been around 31:30!
The plan really works, couldn't believe back in March that I'd be running for 30+mins but I am and enjoying it loads! Grin

pennygallops · 01/06/2013 16:08

Lots of Saturday running posts!

yetanotherworry - I also run the pavements and nosey at the house and gardens. So does my DS when he joins me. We play - which would you like to live in? I have taken the DC out on their bikes whilst I've done longer runs.

Glad to hear you had a good run cinnamon - gives me hope.

Well done on complete the first run lizs

I've managed to cycle about 15km today - to the parkrun and also DS's triathlon training. Knee was fine! Walking is fine. But it really hurts if start to jog (so I haven't). DD loved marshalling with me this morning.

LIZS · 01/06/2013 15:19

Did about 2.4km so some way to go !

LIZS · 01/06/2013 15:03

Week 1 run 1 today - was much tougher than I remembered and had a tight calf after run 4 . dd came with me and easily outran me. May not have helped going on muddy tracks and hills for first one though!

cinnamongreyhound · 01/06/2013 13:19

Welcome judyandherdreamofhorses, nearlyreadytopol and eminemmerdale and ArgumentativeAardvark!

If you can't do it on yor phone you am use map my run when you get back nextphase. Distance isn't really too much of a worry I just wanted to know because I'm a bit geeky. I got a second hand iPod for £50 and it has a Nike + app on it when I didn't want to take my phone but Im not sure you'd be able to use the podcast at the same time. I have no idea about running on the spot! I fitted around work, dh and kids by running weekends and late in the evening. When I did the c25k I ran every other day and now 3-4 times a week depending on time and I don't always have a rest day between although I do think its a good idea what ever stage you're at. I started with a small loop and did it three times, as I was running more and went further had to adjust my route.

My injury really knocked my confidence and has out me off entering a half pennygallops, but my friend wants to do it! Only 7 weeks to get from 7 miles to 13, hmmmm!!!! Eeek! Still not entered!

Well done on the marathon englishteacher78, and good luck with ttc :)

I did parkrun in 27 something so not my best but miles better than the last one since I've been injured. Will wait for official times.

nextphase I am going to be starting shortly too. Getting a new phone next week and top of my list of things to download is an app for this. Am extremely fat and unfit, but used to be very sporty, and have heard good things about this.

nextphase · 01/06/2013 13:05

Cool, thanks, so I could do friday and sunday every week, and then mid week either at home, or out depending on who is about? Brill.

OK, better get the podcasts, and tell DH what I'm doing tomorrow!

yetanotherworry · 01/06/2013 13:00

nextphase, I just run round the streets - I find looking at the houses and gardens distracts me a bit and if I'm feeling out of breath I can aim to run to the next lampost which keeps me going longer.
I have friends who do the app with kids in tow - they walk to the park (5 min warm up), kids play with a ball/in playground while mum runs around, or kids play on their bikes. Then they walk home for a cool down.

englishteacher78 · 01/06/2013 12:49

Part of the reason I did it this year is we're now TTC! And thought if I waited any longer I'd never do it! I'm in the ballot for next year but fingers crossed I'll get a place and have to defer it! Smile

NamelessMcNally · 01/06/2013 12:17

EnglishT I am swooning over your marathon.atbe when my little one gets to school I'd be able to get in the training but until then the most I can hope for is a half. The children have had a tummy bug last few days. Managed to get out this am, 8k as had time constraints. Legs felt a bit heavy as I'm wrecked with the midnight boaks and bed changes.

englishteacher78 · 01/06/2013 11:07

It's 3 times a week and with warm up and cool down the maximum time is 40 minutes. Jogging on the spot is not the same but if it's all you can do due to time constraints it's better than nothing!

nextphase · 01/06/2013 10:49

Yes, but I don't have a fancy phone to get an app on! I need to do it the low tech way!!!!

If jogging on the spot isn't likely to be OK, how do I find time without kids - they are either with me, or I'm at work, hence the waistline issue!

ArgumentativeAardvark · 01/06/2013 09:53

nearly I've also found a quiet path in the park to run on, it's hidden by some bushes which suits me perfectly at the moment. I don't want people to hear my sigh of relief when I get to the walking part. Grin

BIWI · 01/06/2013 09:28

The app I have (Get Running) tells you times are you are running. So when you start the app you will be told to start your warm-up/brisk walk, and 4 minutes in she tells you that there is a minute left. Then you're told when to start running and during the run you are given notice as to how long you have left to run. Half way through the whole run you're are told that it's the halfway point, so if you need to turn round/head back that's when you turn back.

Not sure about jogging on the spot!

nextphase · 01/06/2013 08:57

Can I ask ask couple of questions - I've looked at the NHS website, and the only info I can find is to download the podcasts, so:

  • how do you find out the distances? Surely my run for 30 mins is going to be a very different length to someone elses?
  • how many runs/week are involved? *DH works away quite a bit. Would I be able to jog on the spot after the kids are in bed some days when I just can't get out? *how do I guess where to start trying to go first time out? I can see me either running past the same 100 houses (we live on a crescent, so I can go round in circles), or in the middle of nowhere!

Any advice from experienced C25K?

Cheers

nearlyreadytopop · 01/06/2013 08:27

its great to hear all the success stories. I think I am the slowest runner ever. I could probably walk faster than when on my 60sec runs. I feel very awkward lumbering along so I've found a quiet path to avoid people seeingGrin Grin

pennygallops · 01/06/2013 08:00

Wow lots of new people! Welcome to you all. Grin

I went to bed in right old grump last, mainly due my lack of running and painful knee. I spent a good hour on the Internet researching runner's knee, with an ice pack on my injury. Going to try some quad and hamstring strengthening exercises. And I've woken up this morning with no pain, not even walking down the stairs. Yeah! Still resting it for another week though.

I fancied training up to a half-marathon, but I've been put off by my knee this week. I'll work way up to 10k again. I like 10k.

Right, time to get the bikes out and get to the parkrun Grin.

Happy (park)running everyone, I'll be cheering you all on.

ArgumentativeAardvark · 01/06/2013 07:52

Hello, can I join this thread?

I'm just about to run week 2 day 2. Actually looking forward to it as its a beautiful sunny morning. I'm just concerned I'll never run for longer than 90 seconds as at the end of each run I'm absolutely knackered!

englishteacher78 · 01/06/2013 07:47

10k is fun. I love a good race with a shiny finisher's medal and goody bag! Grin Parkrun next week for me. Going to a High Intensity Intervals class this morning.
