Anyone else training for a half marathon?

I graduated from c25k earlier this year and ran my first 10 race in June. A friend has told me that I can do a half marathon in the autumn so I've signed up for one.

I'm a week into the training programme (using the rw one for 2:00-2:15 finishes) and I'm finding it really hard going.

Is there anybody else who is doing a half who wants to share moral support/abuse/highs/lows?

A small world indeed! And I'm a NYRR member Smile

I did the Bronx 10 mile this morning, which was my fourth of the five Borough series this year so I should be in for the NY half next year. And I'm volunteering at the Fifth Avenue mile for my 9+1. I mostly do the shorter Central Park runs (up to 10K), but DH and I have done the 5 borough series together this year.

humblebumble · 09/09/2012 20:09

Yes, I do!! How fun. Small world. Do you do any of the NYRR runs? I am doing the 4 mile next Saturday. It will be my 9 for the 9+1. Then I am qualified for next years NYC marathon, gulp!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 09/09/2012 18:48

humble - so am I! Do you live here too?

humblebumble · 09/09/2012 18:20

neither which half are you doing in October? I'm doing the Staten Island one on the 7th.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 09/09/2012 17:15

Hello runners! It sounds like there's some great and speedy running going on.

I did a 10 miler this morning. I hadn't run for 2 weeks, and was jet lagged having just come back from the UK (I live in the US) but managed a chip time of 2 hours and a few seconds (I was aiming for 2 hours, but a loo stop robbed me of a couple of minutes). I was 1.59 and a few seconds for 10 miles on my Garmin so I'm happy.

My half is on 7 October - has crept up sooner than I realised. And I've just signed up for another half in January with a friend who needed something to train for.

Hi all,

Well done everyone, lots of good long runs.

I did a 10 mile run at an average pace of 9.42, I was trying to make sure I didn't run too fast. It even felt good running up the 3 hills. I felt I had lots left in the tank. The weather was perfect 20 degrees and blue skies. Very happy today.

onedev · 09/09/2012 14:32

Sounds like you're all doing brilliantly today - well done!

KiwiPanda · 09/09/2012 12:49

I've just entered another race. I may need some kind of addiction therapy :) It looked so good though! It's Cabbage Patch race which is fairly local to me. 10 miles and previous winners include Mo Farah GrinGrin

golemmings · 09/09/2012 11:16

Oh kiwi, how bloody frustrating. But well done on the pb.

I've done my 10miles. Averaged 9.30 min/mile which pleaSed me and I'm not totally dead. I could possibly kept that up for another 3mi under race conditions, bringing me close to a 2hr hm. Not sure my phone battery would last another half hour though which is annoying. I may have to think about a garmin for Christmas...

I've just done 15k near my inlaws house - 1.52 but it did include some getting lost on unkept public footpaths along very brambly field edges.

was hot too. Feel really whacked and my knees are seriously complaining. Glad I have a good reason to tone it down those week to ease up before the race.

so... exactly 7 days from now, we'll be off on the downhill to the Tyne!

KiwiPanda · 09/09/2012 10:44

Oh and lemmings I would definitely do the loop first so you know how close you are to home in those last few miles when it all hurts!

KiwiPanda · 09/09/2012 10:43

Thanks! I am back from 10km. Not a fast course as it was nice - all off road, on tow path and round field - but very uneven and in places not even on a path, just grass. I knocked 1 min 20 off my PB which is Grin but missed out on sub-45 which I was aiming for by 13 seconds. Sad

Still I will just have to enter another one now Grin

golemmings · 09/09/2012 07:48

Good luck kiwi! Stick to the shady side and enjoy it!

After running with DH in Friday (he complained the pace was too uneven so I don't think it will be a regular occurence) I dipped out if yesterday's run but I'm off to do 10 miles this morning. Still trying to figure out a route. I have a 9 mile route so I either need to stick a random half mile spur in the middle or a loop of the village at ththe beginning or the end or come into the village via a stonking hill... I'm tempted to run the mile loop around the village to start then I know that when I leave the village I just have to redo last week's run.

Or maybe ear infection?? Although you'd presumably have temp with that (or is that just babies??)

Feel a bit sick in advance of 10k (in 2 hours 20 mins) ugh

humblebumble · 08/09/2012 21:46

lexi Grin we could do a count down day by day?

I hope you start feeling better. It sounds like vertigo ... or pregnancy!

Lexilicious · 08/09/2012 16:13

It can't be last night's wine, I had no more than I quite often would on a Friday night, but I have been feeling rotten today. Headache, nauseous, wobbly, sort of car sick. Not much appetite, but not lethargic either. Hope I'm not coming down with something with (thanks humble, as if it wasn't flashing scarily on all my calendars already!!!) only a week to go. Yikes. Maybe it's all psychosomatic.

KiwiPanda · 08/09/2012 14:15

I have excruciating toothache. Not ideal. Good job they dont drug test amateur runners or I'd be disqualified for excessive pain medication I think Sad

humblebumble · 08/09/2012 01:35

Lexi Ido Onedev only a week to go until the GNR!

Kiwi Good luck for your 10km on Sunday.

I am also doing 10 miles on Sunday, but my HM isn't until October. I am slightly envious yours in next weekend ... although the GNR sounds like it could be a bit too hilly for me.

Lexi good luck with the no booze until next week Grin

Lexilicious · 07/09/2012 22:50

Doesn't that mean that with the weather factor your 10k will be like doing a longer run? (always seeing the slacker's way through a problem, me!!)

I did my 5k "round the block" run this evening. No prizes, no bests. I think my legs are in control of my pace - it's almost like they are always conserving a bit for a longer run than I actually plan to do. This is why I need a real training plan that I do with a club rather than just me and the phone app to keep each other honest.

Last wine tonight before the race. Have to stay off the booze Saturday night (even though it's MIL's birthday dinner) so I don't hurt myself on 10 miles Sunday morning. Then I just want to be detoxed for the real thing. I will drink loads of water all weekband eat carbs from Thursday onwards.

Post-race... Might do the 5k parkrun the flowing Saturday. Then my local 10k another week later. Had a a look at the canal route for November and it is a climb!! There are 15 locks I think, but concentrated towards the end. I still want to do it. Grin

KiwiPanda · 07/09/2012 18:24

Hmmm the weather forecast for Sunday & my 10k looking rather warmer than I thought it would be. Oh dear.

onedev · 06/09/2012 23:38

Lexi, I did a half marathon a while ago which was along a canal towpath as I thought that would be flat, but what I didn't think about were the locks (there were a lot & some were very steep which was so tiring on my legs especially getting close to the end!).

Lexilicious · 06/09/2012 20:09

yeah, I totally didn't look at any of the info about GNR before signing up. Just thought, oh I've heard of that one, people will probably sponsor me well if its a famous one, Newcastle's not difficult to get to...

all of which I am finding were poor estimates of reality!!

golemmings · 06/09/2012 19:23

Lexi, that is exactly why I'm doing a half marathon on a disused railway line which is mostly downhill.

I've had some physio for an injury several times and they are very big on core strength - these are running/ sport specialist physios. I should really do more Pilates but it's finding the time as well as running isn't it? I'm definitely in the stronger legs than CV camp though it definitely depends on pace- at long "easy" pace both are fine but at 10km race pace my lungs start seriously protesting!
