I am now going to dumb this thread down amongst all this talk of academia as I am baout as academic as a rat. Hated school, hated college and never went to uni.

And funnily enough, a week ago I met up with the Durham MNers and they were all saying they reckoned that if co-sleeping was properly explained, rather than just telling people not to do it, then breastfeeding rates would go up tremendously. I think there's a silent majority waiting to get out there...

peach I never found that button either . Did you ever see the film "Robots" (children's animated one). At the beginning of that, they have a baby robot, who starts crying, so they just turn down the volume switch. What a marvellous idea! I should be changing into my running kit - but (a) it looks like it's going to piss down, it's so dark and (b) I just got my hair cut so I am looking quite chic for once (from the neck up, anyway ). I need motivation to get me out there....

Yes, doing a job that you really love would be such a privilage. My first degree was in History but then I went back and did an MSc in I.T., as I couldn't bearvthought of earning 8k a year for the rest of my life, working in a shop . There are worse jobs to be fair, but glad I ditched it to be SAHM for a while. Not sure what I'll do when I go back. No doubt something mind blowing with earth shattering consequences...

almost no sleep last night till 7am due to wakeful baby Kaye and crazy cluster feeding activities. Still, at least she is getting more interested in the milk. Just need to get her to do it in the evening instead of during night! Anyone know where thebprogramming button is on these things?!?

sfx that's such a good point about ethical practice - applies across the board, really. I do love my job (most of the time) but the environment has changed so much and students' expectations are quite different too. I would happily retrain to be an occupational therapist - not going to happen though

Mind you, the advising small businesses is something I was always interested in. I worked for one of the big firms and sometimes got to work with smaller companies but rarely.

I like mire humanities. Is that where you're an archaeologist who's not good at digging, so needs to seek out the damp and squiggly areas? Tho jeez, wheely you really should have found yourself something a bit more interesting after your very interesting sounding academic career!

I would not be cut out for medicine. They have to learn so much - boyfriend before DP was a medic, and I was always really glad I had nice stories to learn (other people call them cases!) whereas all those drugs and body parts . Brains the size of planets!

I agree sfx, and am also hoping that if I got this job I'd be doing more helpful things (advising small businesses etc) that in my last jobs. One needs to sleep at night!

Sfx, I really consider myself mire humanities. Archaeology degree and MA in heritage management. I fell into accountancy by mistake. BIG mistake.

BTW anyone in insurance? I was talking to a few last week and they closely resembled estate agents, must tell that to BIL he is a claims adjuster, now that is popular

Ooh, exciting to hear about further studies and jobs abounding. I was toying with the idea of sitting the Californian Bar exam out in San Fran. Just so I had it. But DH is currently revising for his US financial services exams and I am being reminded how hideous revision is. Eugh.

running - I always wished I had done medicine. Much more interesting than law and soooooooo cool to be able to nosey into people's habits and make-ups. Except possibly slightly depressing as well to confront our mortality on a daily basis. Both my Inlaws are Drs and are always saying they are dreading the signs of a sudden demise coming on.

Don't worry sticky I was an insolvency accountant and am married to a corporate lawyer so pretty unpopular here . Good luck with it all !
