Yep to spirited, feisty, clever, articulate, popular for my ds too. He is a great mimic and has a wonderful sense of humour, and of course I would not change him. Just he is very tiring at times, spending 48 hours with him in Edinburgh highlighted this. He also seems quite immature for his age, doe this fit your dd too?

fannybanjo · 26/10/2011 13:34

Through not throw the post!

fannybanjo · 26/10/2011 13:34

Afternoon all! Marking my place also as busy busy busy as DD1's birthday tomorrow. MIL and SIL sent her money throw the post (DH isn't speaking to them at the mo) so she's dragged me out to Argos to buy a much wanted IPod Shuffle. She's exactly like me, money burns a hole in her pocket if she has it longer than 30 seconds!

DrNo your DS sounds EXACTLY like DD1. She whines like a 2 year old if she doesn't get her way. Also she is hyperventilating with excitement re her birthday, to the point where she is feeling ill... Hmm. Makes life hectic but wouldn't change her for the world. She's spirited, feisty, clever, articulate, popular - her enthusiasm bewilders me sometimes!

rhet you may need to build an Ark.

Strangeways - I'm going to join a running club too - I think it'll help me loads.

Crappy 2 miler last night - it was a case of doing that or nowt so if I can get presents wrapped this afternoon, I'll go for an 8 miler tonight but drive to where it's more built up.

DD1 driving me up the wall as I type.... Angry

DrNortherner · 26/10/2011 12:59

Afternoon All. Just popping in to mark my place. This thread had dropped from 'threads I am on' and I had a small panic.

We got back from Edinburgh last night. Oh how I LOVE that city. I want to liv there. We did so much. Am exhausted from walking and sightseeing. Am at work today (Boo) and mumsnetting on my lunch break. Manged to fit in 2 5k runs each morning before fat cow breakfast at the hotel. We travelled first class (free tickets through work) and I also pigged out and aceppted all the free food on offer, no wonder my trousers felt tighter than normal today Grin Got to drag myself out for a run this eve Smile

master can not beileve how scary the thought of your run is with all that unrest going on. Puts our pre race worries into perspective. Keep safe.

Interesting reading about those of you with difficult kids. My ds (9) is a handful, constantly on the go, always talking/moving/fidgeting, never seems to listen and will always ask again and again and again for things despite being told no. He can be quite exhasuting, as I only have the 1 it's difficult to know what is normal and what is not. But, as fanny says, he is also teh most loving and demonostrtive boy and will constantly smother me in kisses and hugs telling me how wonderful I am. He is an Aries if that makes any difference! We are off to GP next week as his teacher wants him to get a hearing test, but I nkow darn well there is nothing wrong with his hearing.....am wondering about ADHD or something similar....

rhet good luck with the Mother arriving. A coach and a through the night ferry will give her soemthing to compalin about I bet......hope you manage a nice time all together.

rhetorician · 26/10/2011 11:58

orangehead I know how you feel - I'm not sure that I can fit a run in today either, unless I go before picking dd up this afternoon...don't like it when I can't run either (which is entirely different to deciding NOT to run IYSWIM).

Everything back to normal - for us, at least, thank goodness

orangehead · 26/10/2011 09:25

Strangeways well done for joining. I would like to join one but both local clubs run on the same night and it is the the only one night a week I can't go out. There is one a bit further away that meets at 6pm but on that day I work till about 7 Sad. None of them say on the website the do day runs. Might have more luck if they did as I only work two days a week.
Didn't realise things were so bad in Dublin Rhet hope your keeping dry and hope your mum's visit goes well.
I normally do a run today but got plans with the boys and then out this evening. I have no idea an I can fit one in Sad don't like it wen I can't run.

StrangewaysHereICome · 25/10/2011 21:42

Thanks for all the advice. I think I've decided against it. peach he does like a fuss made of him on his birthday. In fact when I went overdue with DS he kept saying don't have the baby on his birthday as he didn't want to share it! I just managed to squeeze him out the day before Blush

rhetorician · 25/10/2011 20:35

6/30am on Thursday, I should say

rhetorician · 25/10/2011 20:34

yes thanks, we are all fine - I got incredibly wet yesterday, I've rarely seen rain like it, at least not that lasts for 9+ hours! I don't think any wet gear could have coped - even the goretex trail shoes succumbed in the end to my cycling through 5 or 6 inches of water! but some real damage has been done

Went out this afternoon for about 5 miles (there were some unexpected water features to negotiate), but it was sunny and in places quite warm. There was a big rainbow, so i made appropriate pre-partum wishes (and one for you peach)...

my mother is insane and is coming on the coach and ferry, overnight, arriving in Dublin at 6.30am (she is 77, btw); somehow this seems preferable to getting on a plane like normal people

I am getting more and more behind with my work - it relies so heavily on lots of out of hours time that I am really struggling to do much more than keep the show on the road. This feels strange to me, having spent most of my life as a workaholic. I'm not sure I like it...

stickylittlefingers · 25/10/2011 20:20

hi - just to say hi really, half term has taken over my life! The only run I have planned is next week's park run, which is fancy dress so DD1 fancies it. Trying to work out a halloween costume that's easy and wouldn't get in the way too much - any ideas?

ibby I'm very impressed by the prizes! Well done you. Don't feel fraudulent, just happy to be younger than those speedy oldies!

debi I like vicariously experiencing your tris, well done you too.

fanny we seem to have worked through the backchat (for now Wink) with DD1, but she will still go into a strop at the drop of a hat. But, she's also the most loving and demonstrative little person, so I think we have to accept two sides of her character, and just try to keep her socially acceptable. Can be exhausting though.

rhet I've been watching that video of the water coming through the Dublin Bus... amazing! Hope you're keeping dry.

running do you live in Devon/Cornwall? I grew up in Devon and, ahem, I'm a pretty good shot. Don't take anything with me on my runs, but I do see a lot of rabbits. Would cut down the supermarket bill Wink

wench still have my mouth wide open re your MIL. Un-bloody-believable!

Peach good to hear your visit went well (as it could), and very impressed by your MIL. I hope I would be the same.

strange I think the only way is to talk about it, to say you don't want to do it if it would make him unhappy and spoil his birthday. Hope he says he's happy with it (and his perfect birthday evening is to see you snoring gently in front of the telly!).

June2009 · 25/10/2011 19:21

strangeways you will probably be tired on the day of the hm after the race, and the day after, take that into consideration also if you are planning to go out.
I'm not sure what I would do to be honest, my next event is the day before dh's bday but we have already planned to go out the weekend before.
is this hm on the same date every year? (ie can you take a rain check this time?) Is there another one that "would do" soon after? Is it usually a struggle with dh to fit your runs in? Does he generally feel like your running comes first ? Not sure how open a chat can be, dh would tell me to do it even if he would prefer me not to. Hth...

June2009 · 25/10/2011 19:12

Yes peach thanks, you are very wise. I just had a talk with my trainer who told me not to train until next week :( long walk in the park and stretches until then. Boo . Will try and catch up properly with the thread, lots of new people :)

orangehead · 25/10/2011 16:58

Yes did peach and sadly only got half way through the pile. Thats a good idea to do an extra bag, I ended up staying in a week with both of mine. I was crawling the walls. Hopefully you won't be in that long.

peachsmuggler · 25/10/2011 16:41

Strangeways, does he like to make a big deal of his birthday? My DP is never fussed about them, though in saying that he likes a chocolate cake and a lie in! Like others have said, you could spend the rest of the day doing nice birthday things, but I would probably have a very open chat sbout it. You don't want to end up doing it feeling his simmering resentment!!!

orange, hope you didn't spend all your free time doing ironing!!!

fanny, I'd love a little flapjock if there's any left. We were just about to make Halloween biscuits but discovered there was no greased proof paper so it will have to wait till tomorrow.

Rhet, glad the rain has subsided a bit, perhaps this is a good time t train for a triathalon, you know, costume on, dive out the door Wink. have packed hosp bag (minus things like dressing gown which I need in the meantime). Also supposed to pack snacks but if I do that now I will just eat them in the night.... Have got an extra bag mainly filled with massive maternity pads Hmm and then secondary bag with stuff for me and baby in case we have to stay in longer than couple of nights as don't think I wouldn't trust DP to bring the right stuff ("Whats the difference between a bodysuit and a sleepsuit???"). Still to do DD's bag.

June , if you do make it to the gym, make sure you take it easy. As well as not having eaten and being tired, you are probably dehydrated too.

monkeywench · 25/10/2011 14:09

strangeways I agree with the advice already given, I'd do it but plan lots of lovely stuff afterwards so he doesn't feel resentful. Last fathers day I was marshalling a race some way away, and I did feel a bit bad for DH as he ended up hanging around for ages waiting for me with all three boys - but it was for a charity race in memory of children who had lost a dad, so he said he was OK with it.

Planning to multitask this afternoon and "amuse" the boys with making home made pizza - I've found they quite like eating it if they've made it themselves!

orangehead · 25/10/2011 13:13

Shock running, you obviously see the best in people thinking he was after rabbits most of us are more suspicious Smile.
Strangeways I suppose you need a proper conversation with dh to if he would be bothered. Could you promise something big later on or on the next day to make up Grin. But seriously it's so easy for people to say yeah I'm not bothered, when it does and then they can't let go like they thought they could. So honest chat is the way to go I think.
Hope you feeling up to the gym soon june

June2009 · 25/10/2011 12:42

Ooooh ibby and debbie GREAT race reports :)
You made me want to go out and RUN and sign up for the next event and beat my PB arghhhhhh!
Tummy better but so very tired :( can't face real food yet really put off. But i will go insane if i don't get my ass to the gym tomorrow morning.
On the subject of MiLs mine is very tactless and incredibly selfish, and doesn't let anyone get a word in edgeways, frustrating, but I think there is a good person underneath all the madness, somewhere, there must be....

and dd is a 2.5 tantrumming toddler it's not good news they still talk back at 9yo fanny and when i remember what an awful moody and unreasonable teenager I was .
The next thing in doing is a bit different, bodycombat "marathon" (not an actual marathon, just lots of bodycombat back to back) raising money for breast cancer. Should be fun :)

RunningAllDay · 25/10/2011 10:48

Strangeways, would you mind if he did HM (or similar) on your birthday? That's how I'd decide it.

not quite in the masters league but had a bit of a shock this morning when I saw a man with a gun sitting in a hedge. He smiled and said hello, so I guess he was after rabbits rather than runners!

rhetorician · 25/10/2011 10:48

ibby thanks, we're fine, but transport all cocked up so confined to barracks for the day, I think (I have a class on Tuesdays, but we all decided that it was best to reschedule it). But it's not raining much now, so I am hoping to get out for a bit of a run - I had been planning 15k today, but I'll try and do it later in the week - probably not until Monday, realistically. No matter.

Am feeling a bit nervous about all the chat about troublesome children - DD1 is generally speaking, pretty easy (she has her moments), so I'd say we are due a small bundle of trouble (i.e. we never really had to do much baby-proofing as DD was quite good about that kind of thing). DP just made her hospital bag list [hshock]. peach how are you doing? I think we will just ask DP's mum to come over - she only lives about 10 minutes away by car. If worst came to worst, one of the neighbours would watch DD until nana or one of her aunties got here.

ibbydibby · 25/10/2011 10:41

Strangeways think I would be tempted to enter now at least (is it v expensive if you then decide to drop out?), and plan some lovely things for the rest of the day, if possible. Difficult one though. I have similar(ish) dilemma - someone at running club is organising a pre HM training run in Nov. Will cover the full 13.2 miles and I really want to go - but it is also DS1's birthday. If he were 5 or 6 I would probably forget it, but he will be 15. Still a bit dubious as to whether or not to go, as it is not an actual race, and I will need to get up to that distance myself anyway...

Monkey sorry about MIL's comment. Awful. My MIL is mainly lovely, but has come up with a few gems in her time. The best being when she asked me whether my mum would like a ladyshave for Christmas to deal with her moustache...that's something I will not be repeating to my mum!

Master sounds very tense and scary.

Rhet hope all ok. Have seen a few pictures and looks very frightening.

Fanny your baking sounds delicious. Just 2 boys in this house (3 including DH!) so no experience with DDs. Though I used to find with DS1 particularly that if he was naughty then I would tell him off, but talk through it once we had both calmed down. He is (fingers crossed) lovely now - is almost 15, and is becoming a very caring young man. Though puberty does not seem to have hit yet, so wondering if his loveliness is about to change.....

Peach glad that your visit went well and was so much appreciated. your poor dad and wife though.

Debi your race sounds really tough, well done Don't think I could ever do that, the bike to run transition would turn my legs to jelly I think. I have once been at the back of a race, my friend and I came 73rd and 74th out of a field of 75. Well someone has to take these positions.

Thanks for kind words re my prize and medals at weekend - I have to confess that had I been in the next age-group (ie 50-54) I would have come away empty handed, as there quite a few in that age category faster than me. So I am feeling just a little fraudulent!

StrangewaysHereICome · 25/10/2011 09:57

Fabulous race reports debi and ibby Grin. well done for breaking two hours debi that sounded really tough, it must be hard swapping from running to bike and then doing it all over again! How exciting about your prizes ibby, I secretly dream that maybe one day I will get a prize .... Maybe if I maintain my current levels until I am 70 I might stand a chance [ wink]. Brilliant, you should be so chuffed and so lovely you were there for the prizes.

monkey we found out about DD when she was 1, she's 5 now. I gave her a peanut butter sandwich and she gagged straightaway. Her face, lips and tongue swelled up, as did anywhere she put her fingers with any trace of peanut butter on. She didn't swallow any as the reaction was instant and thank god her instinct was to spit it out. She wheezed but stayed alert, whereas I panicked. I sloshed some anti histamine down her and drove her to A&E myself, I just couldn't sit and wait for an ambulance, but saying that although wheezing she wasn't in severe distress. She didn't need adrenalin as the anti histamine stopped the swelling. She has since been tested and is allergic to peanuts only. I always carry her epipens and some antihistamine with me all the time. The school have been very good and are trying to make the school a nut free zone. That is so scary about your DS, it must have been so terribly frightening. Medical staff are amazing aren't they. Fingers crossed they grow out of it.

Anyway peeps, can I have an opinion on something? AIBU to run a HM on DH's birthday? The quandary is that the race is a new one and is so local it passes the end of our road Grin. It starts at 9.30 so I hope to be done and dusted, home and showered by lunchtime. He said he wouldn't mind if I do it, but when he saw me fill in the application, he said, " so you're doing it then", in that tone IYSWIM Confused. he didn't have much fun on his birthday this year because I had had DS 7 hours earlier and all the attention was on me!! It's not until March but there are limited spaces. WWYD.....

orangehead · 25/10/2011 09:44

No rain here. Getting rid of the boys for a coupleof hours as they are goingto a friends, so I'm getting th ironning out Hmm. Feeling a bit sore after mygym session last night

sfxmum · 25/10/2011 09:16

hello

master that is worrying seems to be all over the world now, London seems to have settled onto an uneasy quiet more or less as always although after 7/7 it was very freaky on all sorts of ways, was reading AL Qaeda by Jason Burke and it interesting to see the real problem as opposed to the war on terror business . I hope it does not escalate

not much rain here weather seems ok will be outdoors with dd for most of the day
who btw is 6 going on 16, we have stomping off to bedroom, plenty of talk back and obviously whatever I say is likely to be wrongHmm
she is also delightful and clever in many ways but the every so slightly hormonal behaviour is wearing and dh gets totally baffled by it

Themasterandmargaritas · 25/10/2011 05:10

It is a big concern, security has been upped all over town. Al shabaab announced they would target the heart of Kenya in retaliation for Kenyan military action in Somalia. We have been advised against going to shopping malls, restaurants, nightclubs (like that applies to me anymore!),which is quite tricky as all the big supermarkets are in malls. The attack last night was at a very busy bus terminal. Scary stuff especially when you think it is likely we shall have a big attack happen in the next few months. Otherwise Kenya is a fantastic place to live Grin. After 12 years in Africa you have learn to take the bad with the good. Smile

Now onto naughty children, fannys dc mirror mine, dc1 is a pain (takes after her mother and is another Scorpio) dc2 is laid back, dc3 just gets on with life.

OP posts:
monkeywench · 24/10/2011 22:53

Ah the rain is here. Did a lovely tempo run this evening, and the weather was mild and breezy - poor DH has just stepped out into the pouring rain with a very very pissed off looking dog Grin.
