Morning everyone, sorry if this is long.
My 97 year old mum is currently in a care home following a fall at home, broken tip of femur and 3 weeks in hospital. Now bed bound but believes she will be able to walk again. I think it highly unlikely but she is very determined!
Other health complications are involved and the medics have advised her that her life expectancy is likely to be measured in weeks rather than months. She is tired and frail but has all her mental faculties.
Her wish is to go home to spend what time she has left there. Family on board with arranging that although most live at distance.
We have lined up 24/7 carers at home, liaising with community palliative team etc. Hospital bed and mattress arrived yesterday but no guard rails!!
Occupational Therapy have advised these are deemed an entrapment hazard and that they will order crash mats in case mum fall out of bed!
This seems crazy to me. Surely closed sided guard rails would be much safer than the risk of injury to a frail patient falling on a mat from their bed.
I wondered if anyone on MN has any experience of similar and if you were able to access suitable guard rails.
Mum's care home bed has them.
Thanks in advance for any advice. Mum's return home is stalled until we can sort this
