Birmingham Airport – Appalling Hygiene Standards and Disrespectful Treatment of an Elderly Passenger
My experience at Birmingham Airport was profoundly disappointing. From the apparent lack of organisation to the unacceptable condition of the sanitary facilities, the airport fell considerably short of the standards I would expect from a major international transport hub. However, what disturbed me most was the manner in which a member of staff addressed my elderly mother.
My mother was 77 years old and living with Alzheimer's disease. During our visit, she politely approached a female member of staff to ask where she could find the appropriate check-in counter. It was a simple, perfectly reasonable question that deserved an equally straightforward and courteous response.
Instead, the employee spoke to her in a manner I found insolent, dismissive and deeply disrespectful. I was genuinely appalled by her tone and apparent lack of basic courtesy.
Whether the employee knew about my mother's condition is immaterial. Elderly passengers should not have to disclose medical diagnoses to receive patience, kindness and respectful treatment. My mother was polite, asked for assistance and deserved to be addressed with dignity. The way she was spoken to was entirely unnecessary and, in my view, indefensible.
What makes this particularly troubling is that airports are environments in which elderly passengers and people with cognitive difficulties can easily become confused or disorientated. Staff should be capable of recognising when a passenger simply needs a little patience and reassurance. Basic compassion should be an expectation, not an exception.
Unfortunately, the airport's physical environment did little to improve an already unpleasant experience.
The general organisation appeared poor, and the overall surroundings gave an impression of inadequate attention to passenger comfort and cleanliness. Most alarming was the condition of the toilet facilities. I encountered toilets that were visibly soiled with faeces, with faecal matter also present on the floor. The conditions were disgusting, unhygienic and entirely unacceptable in a public facility, let alone an international airport.
These are not minor cosmetic shortcomings. Clean toilets, clear information and courteous assistance are among the most fundamental expectations passengers should be able to have when travelling.
I fully appreciate that airport employees work in demanding environments and that busy periods can place considerable pressure on staff and facilities. Nevertheless, neither operational pressure nor passenger volumes excuse disrespectful conduct or such serious deficiencies in cleanliness.
What I find most difficult to accept is that my 77-year-old mother, living with Alzheimer's disease, could not ask a simple question without being addressed in a manner that I found so disrespectful. That experience has remained with me far more than the other shortcomings I encountered.
Birmingham Airport's management should seriously examine the standards of customer service, dementia awareness, staff conduct and sanitation being maintained throughout its facilities.
An airport should be judged not only by how efficiently it processes passengers, but also by how respectfully it treats them, particularly those who may be elderly or vulnerable.
My experience of Birmingham Airport was extremely poor. The unhygienic toilet facilities were unacceptable, but the treatment of my mother was, without question, the most offensive and disappointing aspect of the entire visit.
I sincerely hope the management takes such concerns seriously, because passengers and their families deserve considerably better.

OP - where were you in all of this?

LetMeGoogleThat · 21/10/2026 13:34

That's one hell of a rant with zero specific details, vague 'Staff', your interpretation of how someone spoke, and a dirty loo! My only concern flying from Birmingham are the cross winds that even the pilots don't like.
Let's hope the management of Birmingham airport use MN and can address your concerns, if they can find them!

PropertyD · 21/10/2026 13:40

I also wonder whether this has been relayed by dementia person to the adult child.

GiveMeWordGames · 21/10/2026 13:43

Your mother "was 77 years old and living with Alzheimers" ??

My condolences.

Anyway, no idea if you're actually looking for feedback but as pps have said, long winded, vague, self-righteous, throwing in lots of over-dramatised complaints hoping one will stick. Will be a huge case of TLDR to whoever is on the receiving end.

haggingtime · 21/10/2026 13:45

Ma’am this is a Mumsnet.

Really though, shouldn’t this be addressed to their airport customer services dept? MN can’t do anything about it.

I travel through Brum airport often and it’s like any big airport. Most public toilets will have shit around them at some point every week.

What did the staff even say to your DM? It’s not at all clear what the issue was.

KaleidoscopeSmile · 21/10/2026 14:14

I don't think that's AI. It doesn't usually write like a Victorian lady novelist with a bit of "Outraged of Tunbridge Wells" thrown in.

Ineedanewsofa · 21/10/2026 14:22

@Charlie7777 complain to the airport, a lot more concisely!
@RaggedRocks Birmingham Airport isn’t actually in Birmingham, it sneaks into a B postcode but is technically Solihull
The airport is a building site at the minute which is a PITA, they are also building HS2 round it which is making things worse but FWIW my elderly parents used the assisted passage service there for years and never had a problem with being treated with dignity and respect

ohtowinthelottery · 21/10/2026 15:55

I've used Birmingham airport loads of times. Never had a problem with any of the things you mentioned. Staff in check in area and security always friendly and polite. Toilets clean. I'd far rather use Birmingham than Manchester.

It's 100% AI.

AlohaRose · 22/10/2026 17:11

Soooo many words and yet no indication at all of what the staff member said to your mother or why your elderly mother with Alzheimers had to ask for directions when you were presumably standing right there? Why did you not deal with the issue at the time? Or can you only communicate via AI-generated rants?

PinkPhonyClub · 22/10/2026 17:12

That’s a lot of words to say you thought a member of staff rude and the toilets dirty.

HeddaGarbled · 22/10/2026 17:16

major international transport hub

Do you talk like this in real life?

MyKindHiker · 22/10/2026 17:38

RaggedRocks · 20/10/2026 18:15

Birmingham = 3rd World City these days

These days?

i am from birmingham and can assure you from the bottom of my heart, it has always been a sh1t hole.

tinderboxofaheart · 22/10/2026 17:45

This is one of the problems with asking AI to do stuff. It gives paragraphs where a well constructed sentence could have done the job better.

Laiste · 22/10/2026 17:49

Wow.

I enjoy a stiff letter more than most but blimey - who ever this is directed at will have chucked it in the bin switched off a third of the way through that!

Laiste · 22/10/2026 17:49

Are you asking for feedback actually?

SirChenjins · 22/10/2026 17:55

I know MN is pretty amazing, but I don't think it has much influence over the staff or toilets of Birmingham Airport.

katzrooldogzdrool · 22/10/2026 18:03

If you were present, why didn't you find the check-in counter, rather than leaving your elderly mother who has dementia to find it?
