Birmingham Airport – Appalling Hygiene Standards and Disrespectful Treatment of an Elderly Passenger
My experience at Birmingham Airport was profoundly disappointing. From the apparent lack of organisation to the unacceptable condition of the sanitary facilities, the airport fell considerably short of the standards I would expect from a major international transport hub. However, what disturbed me most was the manner in which a member of staff addressed my elderly mother.
My mother was 77 years old and living with Alzheimer's disease. During our visit, she politely approached a female member of staff to ask where she could find the appropriate check-in counter. It was a simple, perfectly reasonable question that deserved an equally straightforward and courteous response.
Instead, the employee spoke to her in a manner I found insolent, dismissive and deeply disrespectful. I was genuinely appalled by her tone and apparent lack of basic courtesy.
Whether the employee knew about my mother's condition is immaterial. Elderly passengers should not have to disclose medical diagnoses to receive patience, kindness and respectful treatment. My mother was polite, asked for assistance and deserved to be addressed with dignity. The way she was spoken to was entirely unnecessary and, in my view, indefensible.
What makes this particularly troubling is that airports are environments in which elderly passengers and people with cognitive difficulties can easily become confused or disorientated. Staff should be capable of recognising when a passenger simply needs a little patience and reassurance. Basic compassion should be an expectation, not an exception.
Unfortunately, the airport's physical environment did little to improve an already unpleasant experience.
The general organisation appeared poor, and the overall surroundings gave an impression of inadequate attention to passenger comfort and cleanliness. Most alarming was the condition of the toilet facilities. I encountered toilets that were visibly soiled with faeces, with faecal matter also present on the floor. The conditions were disgusting, unhygienic and entirely unacceptable in a public facility, let alone an international airport.
These are not minor cosmetic shortcomings. Clean toilets, clear information and courteous assistance are among the most fundamental expectations passengers should be able to have when travelling.
I fully appreciate that airport employees work in demanding environments and that busy periods can place considerable pressure on staff and facilities. Nevertheless, neither operational pressure nor passenger volumes excuse disrespectful conduct or such serious deficiencies in cleanliness.
What I find most difficult to accept is that my 77-year-old mother, living with Alzheimer's disease, could not ask a simple question without being addressed in a manner that I found so disrespectful. That experience has remained with me far more than the other shortcomings I encountered.
Birmingham Airport's management should seriously examine the standards of customer service, dementia awareness, staff conduct and sanitation being maintained throughout its facilities.
An airport should be judged not only by how efficiently it processes passengers, but also by how respectfully it treats them, particularly those who may be elderly or vulnerable.
My experience of Birmingham Airport was extremely poor. The unhygienic toilet facilities were unacceptable, but the treatment of my mother was, without question, the most offensive and disappointing aspect of the entire visit.
I sincerely hope the management takes such concerns seriously, because passengers and their families deserve considerably better.

Perhaps you should tell Chat GPT what the person actually did or said rather than concentrate upon your ranting about it?

NameChangeScot · 20/10/2026 17:53

You've not even said what the member of staff said or did that was so bad?

Maybe complain to the airport than Mumsnet?

Arlanymor · 20/10/2026 17:53

Are you asking us to analyse your AI-generated email of complaint to the airport?

If so:

  • Too long
  • To many issues conflated
  • No outline of how you would expect these things to be addressed - in fact, what happened when you confronted the worker over how they spoke to your mum?
RedTagAlan · 20/10/2026 17:48

Quoting the OP. "I found insolent, dismissive and deeply disrespectful. I was genuinely appalled by her tone and apparent lack of basic courtesy."

So, you witnessed this?

I am a bit confused. Because you said your mother approached a member of staff. But if you witnessed this, then it would be you, plural, who approached the staff member as a couple, or a group. In which case, the staff member was "insolent, dismissive and deeply disrespectful", to your group.

If that makes sense.

Unless of course, your mother with "Alzheimer's disease." approached a member of staff, who spotted a potential issue with your mother, and tried to address that. And you got the story second hand from your mother ?

This scenario is backed up by this you posted, quote "Elderly passengers should not have to disclose medical diagnoses to receive patience, kindness and respectful treatment."

Are you all travelling together ? I assume you were travelling and not just visiting.

The toilets are just conflation.

JanuaryLove · 20/10/2026 17:29

There's loads of toilets at airports not just that one - we've all been in one and performed an immediate u turn I'm sure

if someone is rude to me, it doesn't happen often actually much less than it seems in here but I say 'cheer up mate' which I personally think has just the right amount of lightheartedness and rudeness 😂

You need to be specific about what happened here - what was the actual reply?

BIWI · 20/10/2026 17:27

Ask AI to précis this for you.

RedSkyhere · 20/10/2026 17:27

I agree that neither of these issues are acceptable. Did you speak to anyone to make a complaint? I have found airport staff across the world are often very dismissive in the way they talk to people. I think they have to deal with angry people so often that they talk to people in such a firm uninterested tone and this makes customers angry....

FamilyPhoto · 20/10/2026 17:26

Complain to the airport. Be concise.

Mableandable · 20/10/2026 17:26

What on earth are you posting that here for? Did you get lost on your way to a complaints form???

DumpedByText · 20/10/2026 17:26

What are you hoping for with this post?

Minasama · 20/10/2026 17:25

I would complain directly to the airport.

While I think the toilets could use more frequent cleaning, this incident is a one-off that needed addressing by someone flagging it to a member of staff, it isn’t usual that the toilets are in this state.

AlphabetBird · 20/10/2026 17:24

Noted? Sorry you had a bad day, but all airports are quite shite and this isn’t their complaints portal.

GreengrocersApostrophe · 20/10/2026 17:24

If you do make a formal complaint, keep it to ten abridged volumes (or less)

shellyleppard · 20/10/2026 17:24

If the toilets were that bad why not just use another cubicle?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 20/10/2026 17:23

I think you've misdirected your airport complaint to Mumsnet. If you were with her though why didn't you advocate for her and just stand there being appalled?

Mydogisagentleman · 20/10/2026 17:19

Im failing to see what your point actually is.
All airports are shitpits

Sparkletastic · 20/10/2026 17:17

Rein it in on the overly long AI posting.
