I am going to divorce my husband of 30+ years due to his alcoholism and horrible behaviour. I think he will refuse to cooperate in any way. We have quite a lot of property and other assets, and I think he will not understand that I am probably likely to get half. I may have to incur legal fees as a result (unless a sensible friend speaks to him and explains this).
I am prepared to pay legal fees as I guess I have no other option, but has anyone been in this position and a judge made the other party contribute?

You should expect to pay your own legal fees

a judge could, in rare circumstances order order the other party to incur some of the other party’s fees if for example the other party was particularly obstructive, refused to disclose court order information etc which led directly to incremental costs to the other party,

but it’s more you each get left with your own costs and fees which is why people try to do as much as they can themselves or agree between themselves
