This journalist admits that his reporting from Gaza was not accurate because he was afraid of retaliation from Hamas.
Why have so many believed every report from Gaza journalists?

The initial protests were started by already established pro Palestinian groups who had experience in organising protests. I believe they anticipated that Israel's response was going to be totally brutal and they were hoping to encourage an immediate ceasefire to resolve the situation. The initial marches were small, only a few hundred protestors. They didn't explode into the massive protests we saw until the end of October.

”the initial marches were small, only a few hundred protestors. They didn't explode into the massive protests we saw until the end of October.”

Thats not exactly true though. This report is a week after October 7

www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/10/16/mapping-protests-held-in-solidarity-with-palestine

I would like to go back to this point as I think it links to the topic and shows how incredibly effective the Hamas propaganda machine has been.
In the immediate aftermath of October 7 people were organising protests AGAINST Israel….
The protests were incredibly widespread and seemed orchestrated . ( Note the March in London on October 9!!!! Not a candlelit vigil with prayers @LoremIpsumCici )
These occurred before the terrible impact of the Israeli response was felt.
The protesters nearly always completely ignored the horror of October 7 ( and even tore down hostage posters of kidnapped babies who were subsequently murdered)

I agreed with @OpheliaWasntMad that Gaza is poor is because billions of dollars have been misspent on building tunnels and siphoned off by Hamas. And that Hamas leaders are extremely well off.

@LoremIpsumCici gave their opinion that this is not the only reason Gaza is poor and that it is more complex than just blaming Hamas. That's a fair point that there were other contributory factors

Overall though, it's still fair to say that a main reason why Gaza is poor is because billions in aid have been misappropriated by Hamas.

I completely agree that the real reason for Gaza’s poverty is that Hamas has misappropriated the billions sent to provide aid to Gaza .
Posters can certainly argue that Israel’s actions prevented Gaza from properly thriving ( that is clearly true) but the poverty would certainly have been prevented if the BILLIONS of aid money had been used correctly.

Moreover, the terrible death toll suffered by Gazans is also, in part, the responsibility of Hamas who made sure they were surrounded by human shields made up of innocent civilians by basing themselves near or in hospitals and schools etc.

Civilians were not allowed to shelter in the tunnels built with the aid money meant for them.

Im not saying Israel’s actions were fair or proportionate ( I firmly believe they should have found a better way to defeat Hamas - although I acknowledge that is easier said than done)

The discourse around this conflict so often seems to ignore the role Hamas ( and by extension Iran) has played in the suffering of Palestinians- and that is why I started this thread.

It is a pretty strange comparison to come to mind rather than are all American/French/Danish people responsible for the actions of their government which would be the obvious comparison to all Israelis.

Like it would be an anti Muslim thread is someone questioned whether all Muslims should be held culpable for something a Muslim government could potentially do.

That's not really the same thing at all is it? Israelis all live in Israel, all have the chance to vote in their elections, have the options to strike and protest against their government, refuse to serve in their armed forces etc. Israel is a democracy and in a democracy, ordinary people hold the ultimate political authority, power flows from the citizens to the government.

A random British Muslim for instance doesn't have anything to do with any Muslim government or Muslim country. They are British, live, vote, work etc in Britain. They might not even be aware of whatever Muslim governments existence because they are British and live in Britain.

What @LoremIpsumCici said isn't opinion. It's a fact. You can have a very quick google and look at the causes of poverty in Gaza yourself.

I think it was @SharonEllis who made the initial comment that the ONLY reason Gaza was poor was because of Hamas. That is obviously incorrect and entirely let's the Israelis off the hook. We've seen this a number of times before from some posters.

I never said criticising the actions of the Israeli government or rogue IDF members was anti Israel, but it's not as though posters just stick to criticising them is it? As I said before, plenty of posts get deleted for antisemitism - which doesn't happen when people just criticise the government or IDF.

I also gave the example of the current thread that starts with the OP posing the question, If the current Israeli government manage to expel all Palestinians from the land, should all Israelis be held culpable for not trying to stop it. That's an anti Israel thread. Like it would be an anti Muslim thread is someone questioned whether all Muslims should be held culpable for something a Muslim government could potentially do.

You are mixing things up a bit there.
You have switched from a thread title that you see as 'anti Israel' (I don't) to talking about all Muslims. That is racist. The equivalent would be to ask if all Jews are responsible for the actions of the Israeli government.

Yes, there have been some antisemitic comments and even more Islamophobic ones and a number of people who display selective racism towards Arabs/Muslims only.

Describing the reality of the actions of the Israeli government, the Israeli terrorists and the IDF is not anti Israel. Why do you think that this is anti Israel? There are plenty of people who are pro the country of Israel and the concept of a Jewish country but who also hate the actions of the Israeli government, etc.

Do you think that the production team and interviewers that produced Naza 26 were under threat by Hamas too.
We will have a greater understanding one day. No doubt that there is many videos on mobile devices that will be available to the public one day.
The only way forward is a two state solution. One group doesn’t have the right to control another, they need a working solution with political parties who want peace and freedom for both sides. Not blood thirsty maniacs. It’s the one thing that the innocent Israeli people and Palestinian people have in common is they’re both ruled by blood thirsty people.

It's legitimate to be concerned about propaganda and children on both sides.

But this thread is about Hamas and it's not “a bit daft ” to worry about antisemitic propaganda in schools in Gaza.

How did the UN investigate and hold UNRWA to account?

After 16 UN member states, including the U.S., pulled economic support from the agency in January 2024, the UN commissioned the Colonna report, named for former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna who led the panel.

The report, issued four months later, validated concerns about UNRWA’s governance, politicization, and the hijacking of the agency, its facilities, and its mandate for Hamas-led purposes.

The report also confirmed that stronger safeguarding mechanisms are necessary to ensure UNRWA adheres to the humanitarian principle of neutrality, which dictates that humanitarian actors must not take sides in hostilities or engage in controversies of a political, racial, religious, or ideological nature. The report recommended the formation of a governance board to regularly report on neutrality issues.

Rare for a UN report on one of its entities, the Colonna report acknowledged problems with how UNRWA operates, including the permissive environment on problematic content in textbooks, supplemental material and teaching content, the politicization of staff unions and the need to better vet and train staff, and the “misuse” of UNRWA facilities – including an allusion to storing weapons, building tunnels, and other activities unrelated to a humanitarian mission.

UNRWA has committed to implementing all of the recommendations in the Colonna report, but has claimed that much of the implementation is dependent on increased funding and further action by states. So far, the oversight mechanisms of UNRWA have been strengthened, and they have committed to more proactive information sharing with Israel as well as social media monitoring of their local employees.

You seem to have misunderstood what @RedTagAlan meant.

I think the dreadful West send lots of money. Its a popular cause in the West above many others.

I think some people are misled when I hear them parrot untruths.

I understand people supporting the innocent victims in Gaza.

Hamas have profited well from the West.

Many things can be true at the same time.

"The UK is pledging a major new package of aid to provide much needed healthcare support to those desperately in need.
“We urge the government of Israel to listen to our call to action and take steps to end its unacceptable restrictions on Gaza.”
The package forms part of the £127m allocated to the Palestinian territories in the UK’s Official Development Assistance budget for 2026-27."

That’s not how statistics work. You also need to consider the demographics of various areas and where crimes are happening. For example, more than 50% of British Jews live in London, of less than half the hate crimes happen there, the data will be skewed. One reported hate crime can also affect a large number of people, again that makes your extrapolation entirely inaccurate.

It sounds as if you’d like to minimise the reality of the horrifying rise in antisemitism.

Unless you've read all 7,000 posts on those threads, I wouldn't be so quick to assume that none of them are anti Israel.

I haven't read all the posts of course, I stopped actively following those threads some time ago. But I do still glance at them occasionally and there are comments made that go beyond purely criticising government policy or rogue IDF staff. Some of the comments on the threads have been deleted for antisemitism. Some probably would get reported if the thread was looked at more widely but I think it's generally seen as a thread to avoid for anyone who isn't anti Israel. The clue is kinda in the title This is the reality of what Israel is doing now that they don't want people defending Israel on it.

I merely pointed out criticism of Israel doesn’t equate to being Anti-Israel as your post conflated the two. I agree with you 100% that there have been antisemitic posts and posters coming out of the woodwork on multiple threads.

Criticism of the actions of Israeli government officials and military troops is not being “anti Israel”. I am very proIsrael but I am also one of its harshest critics. I love my two countries deeply, which means I care when I see either my countries going down destructive paths.

I definitely believe Muslims suffer hate crimes in the UK, of course they do.

The chances of a Jewish person suffering a hate crime is about 10 times higher, according to statistics.

The problems with victims feeling a reluctance/lack of trust with reporting hate crimes applies to both Jewish and Muslim victims.

Yes, this is true. It’s 10x greater for us. Although our small numbers do mean a bit of mathematical skew so to get a more accurate probability the calculation would need to be adjusted for similar sample sizes. It would also be useful to have granularity on types of hate crimes: Injuring a person is more serious than property damage is more serious than bomb threats is more serious than hate based harrassment online.

The government report combines assaults with and without injury for example. i think too the religion of the perpetrators should be recorded as well.

Has been full for weeks no new thread started. You've named one thread kind of proves my point

I'm sure that thread will start up again but even if it doesn't, there were still 7 threads with the same title that did little but criticise Israel.

I can name other current threads but it's kind of pointless listing them all when we both know there are always threads criticising Israel.

There is one currently containing conspiracy theories that Israel leaders knew the country was about to be attacked in advance of 7/10/23 and allowed it for their own reasons.

There is another one that starts with the OP posing the question, If the current Israeli government manage to expel all Palestinians from the land, should all Israelis be held culpable for not trying to stop it.

It means every Jew has a ten times higher chance of being a victim of a hate crime compared to a Muslim

they do this with sexual abuse which they think is heavily underreported so cross reference to other data sets to try and uncover what is really happening so it’s not unreasonable for there to be an estimate at least to indicate if it is a problem or not

I wouldn’t refer to those numbers as “actual data” either. I also haven’t seen anyone ask for underreporting of rape v other crimes to decide if one is worse than the other. Which is just as well, because that data doesn’t exist.

And as with the rape data, someone who wishes to deny it happens will decide the source is rubbish, or biased, or anecdotal, or……

Then there is the problem that as with most things non white, the amount of research carried out into these types of things is tiny.

The government website states there is known significant underreporting. The Women’s Muslim Network’s survey information shows about 80% goes unreported. You also have to consider cultural norms, and whether Muslim women in particular are less likely even to tell their own family of an incident.

In any case, I don’t see any benefit in playing one off against another. Hate crime is abhorrent and it doesn’t make any difference who it happens to.
