Even if you are in a war torn environment there is no excuse for alarming rates of sexual violence against women in Gaza. I think this highlights the fact that women suffer the most in Islamist governed territories like Gaza where women's rights have been historically removed. Hamas as a government aren't preventing this (weirdly enough) so what can be done. (Maybe a march?)

Reports of violence against women in Gaza surge, UN agency finds

The UN Population Fund also says there has been a "severe escalation" in the number of early and forced marriages.

Disagree? So you think rape is resistance? That October 7th was justified?

@Boolabus I think you are very naïve if you assume countries like your own would not see an increase in abuse and crime if law and order deteriorated. No police to call, no justice, no protection.

Except I never claimed my own country wouldn't see an increase in abuse and crime if law and order deteriorated. I'm sure it would.

Also sure though that we wouldn't suddenly see the girls of 12 married off to grown men. Or rape victims forced to marry their rapists to avoid shame and scandal.

Thanks for clarifying

We can't know that but yes it is unlikely and it is frustrating that the decline that was happening in Gaza has reversed.

HRW 2006 report into sexual violence against women in the OPT.

To those who are seeking to somehow blame lack of reporters, war, or even Israeli aggression for this fucking awful behavior, go check your feminist credentials.

It's conservative Islam that does this to women.

I don't think people are blaming Israel for the increase in rape and sexual abuse, it is a stain on all societies, go visit your local women's refuge chat to the staff about how prevalent it is. What's being highlighted is how much more vulnerable women and children are to abuse in conflict zones when the scaffolding that was there to help protect them is gone. Not clear why people would argue against this or be surprised why people are frustrated with this ongoing protracted situation in Gaza.

My feminist credentials are fine thanks. They've always been about safeguarding women and children whoever the aggressor is.

So the Israeli's are protecting us from that fate are they?

In accurate reporting?

Decent of them...

Where did I say that?Just out of interest how do you think a post like that progresses the conversation?

Oh come on, Of course we know that Hamas wouldn't want accurate reporting.

We will have to disagree.

There is torture, beatings, rape starvation on Palestinian hostages kept without charge in Israeli prisons.

Disagree about what exactly?
That rape happened on October 7th?
Or about whether or not it can be called “resistance”?

TheFlandersPigeon · 24/09/2026 14:52

Is there, like, only a limited amount of rape to go round or something? Someone in Israel has used up today's regional rape ration, so the Gazan wannabe rapist will leave the women around him alone until it's his turn on the calendar. Sorry Hamas nonce, but some dude in Haifa booked today's calendar slot before yo so your kid is safe for the next week.

There is plenty evidence of rape, including testimony from survivors.

Rape is not resistance. Kidnapping and murdering civilians is not resistance. Nothing about October 7th was resistance.

Coming on a thread about rape to deny rape is disgusting.

I don’t think it should be minimised as “just men”.

Appreciate it’s a predominantly female site we’re on but that comment was too harsh on most men who certainly wouldn’t see it as acceptable to see girls married at the age of 12, for example.

I’m not minimising it, I’m pointing out that it’s not unique to Gaza. Men have been doing such things across cultures since time immemorial.

So yes, it is what men frequently do when the boundaries of society break down enough that social norms no longer apply, and women and children are unprotected. Not the majority – not immediately – but a large minority.

Of course, if your society wasn't very nice to women in the first place, I can only imagine that makes it worse.

Oh I've missed that, perhaps you can quote where?
Fine I will repost my words I think you are now just arguing for the sake of it so it is the last thing I will post to you

My first post included media and others which I have said twice to you now this is my opinion and it has not changed
No access for international media, UN and other NGOs, closed borders, starvation, death, sickness, injury, destruction of all social infrastructure (schools, hospitals, universities etc), people surviving in tents amongst rubble.
Let the international community in to support the population, let UN peacekeepers in to protect women.

Your words: It remains massively optimistic to think this will create mechanisms for protection
My response: It will throw eyes on what is happening. The protection though needs to come from international peace keepers in the area.
Consistent with my first point both are needed

Next post to you: It will throw eyes on what is happening Independent journalists can be a platform for investigating evidence and a voice for those abused.
Again consistent with what I have said at the beginning.

To be absolutely clear. The sentence below is where I view protection from access to independent journalists will come from. You may agree or not agree with me but maybe stop telling me I didn't say it.
It will throw eyes on what is happening Independent journalists can be a platform for investigating evidence and a voice for those abused.

From the media freedom coalition and I concur
creates a dangerous information vacuum that enables human rights abuses to go unpunished and allows state-sponsored propaganda to dominate

Right, you haven't actually said anything about journalists alone and neither have you explained how they'd create protection. Even the quotes you cite here don't do that- a vague claim about how journalists can be a platform certainly doesn't mean that person is saying effective protection would be created. And if you genuinely believe independent journalism saying things they didn't like would be permitted under Hamas, I've got a bridge to sell you.

If that was indeed your last post on the matter, very convenient timing.

But these cultural practices hadn't died out and culturally it seems acceptable for them to have increased again during chaotic times.

I would put the blame for rape with the rapists and ditto the mature men marrying 12 year old girls. Not try to place the blame elsewhere such as expecting international peacekeepers to be able to prevent it from happening.

Yes. But I am also talking about prevention and support we blame the criminal of course but what is also needed is security, education and support for the victim and those services are no longer operating

Not try to place the blame elsewhere such as expecting international peacekeepers to be able to prevent it from happening.
There were organisations working in Gaza (as they do in many other countries) providing education, support and advocacy, happens everywhere. I work with women who have been domestically abused to empower and suppport them, without this kind of work abusers thrive. I think you are completely unaware of what organisations and programmes were in place and the work they were doing. With the absence of this, abuse and crime goes up, happened here during covid child abuse and domestic violence figures went through the roof. It is not about blame it is about protection and these services need to get access again for this to happen. I think you are very naïve if you assume countries like your own would not see an increase in abuse and crime if law and order deteriorated. No police to call, no justice, no protection.

I read Johnathan Cook journalist

This is his take on Isreal Palestine. Worth a read.

One final, horrifying subtext to Miliband’s speech announcing a trade ban on the settlements should not go unremarked.

In desperately trying to keep alive the West’s two-state solution, Burnham’s government is not just ignoring reality: the fact that there is no partner in Israel – electable or otherwise – to implement such a vision.

Burnham and Miliband are also insisting, in the entirely improbable event that a Palestinian state can be extracted from Israel, that the Palestinian people should be required to make peace with an unrepentant, heavily militarised, racist state that has recently committed genocide in Gaza.

None of the 11 states that joined the UK this week in sanctioning the settlements can apparently imagine Palestinians ever living in anything more than a small, demilitarised, economically dependent pseudo-state, with no real choice over its leaders, or control over its borders and economy.

Similarly, there is no suggestion that a neighbouring, territorially reduced Israeli state would need to be reformed ideologically, or made to engage in any kind of truth and reconciliation process, or face sanctions until it sees the error of its genocidal ways.

The Jewish supremacist ideology of Zionism, the dehumanising logic of the Israeli settler-colonial mindset, and the religious fundamentalism of large swaths of the Israeli population - all critical to the rationalisation of the Gaza genocide - would remain unchallenged.

On this view, it seems, long-established impulses towards apartheid and genocide would simply evaporate, even as the West continues to indulge Israel’s every whim.

This isn’t a recipe for peace, even of the flawed kind. It is a demand that the Palestinian lamb continue to dwell with the Israeli wolf.

The truth that Burnham’s government refuses to face, as with every government before it, is that peace won’t magically arrive with Palestinian statehood. A Palestinian state – or, more likely, a single state embracing Palestinians and Israeli Jews – can emerge only when Israel has been dismantled as a heavily armed settler-colonial state, as happened with apartheid South Africa.

Israeli society will need to be re-educated through a painful truth and reconciliation process, as also happened in apartheid South Africa. Israelis will have to be made to confront the facts about a century of atrocities committed against the native Palestinian people.

Britain is not contemplating doing any of this – because the threads from unravelling the crimes of Israel and the Zionist movement would lead straight to the door of 10 Downing Street and other western powers.

This is an extract from my latest article. Read more here: www.middleeasteye.net/opinion/milibands-settlement-trade-ban-cosmetic-work-must-sanction-israel

Bit rich given Jonathan Cooks denial of the October 7th rapes, as well as his tendancy to spew pro-Assad and pro-Putin talking points.

I’m not sure much can be done against cultural practices

Well progress was being made before the conflict. Bit defeatist to think nothing can be done:
Before the Conflict: Child marriage rates had been dropping across the Palestinian territories. Data showed a decline from roughly 26–28% in 2009 down to about 11–18% by 2022.
The ongoing conflict has reversed prior progress. United Nations agencies, including the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), report a steep rise in child marriages and adolescent pregnancies.

My first post on this thread is my opinion. This has not changed. No need to gaslight me.
I have been clear what I think access by journalists would bring to the region.

Reminds me of that old joke.

Man: Who will be here to protect you if all men are wiped from the face of the earth?
Woman: Protect me from whom?

Which is why women choose the bear.
