Conflict in the Middle East

To feel sorry for Ed Sheeran.....

1000 replies

mids2019 · 16/09/2026 16:19

So Ed Sheeran's tour is in tatters simply because he believes music for entertainment and personally he likes to keep politics out of it (as many many stars do).

Simply because his support wanted to highlight the oppressed people of Iran and the use of capital punishment to stifle dissent support wanted to bring up Gaza without any reference to the start of the war due to a massacre on October 7th and Ed didn't want that he is suddenly the bad guy? Perhaps Ed succumbed to sing of thinking of Jews in the audience and the connotations of 'Free Paelstine' he is now on the naughty step of virtue signallers.

So all those Sheeran fans could lose out seeing someone they have waited months to see because some humpty has to jump on the Gaza bandwagon with a few trite soundbites as part of his act (because hey the ME isn't complicated) to look a bit radical or whatever. Bloody disgrace.

Don’t tell me what me and my community should be terrified of. Any other ethnic minorities whose fears you want to police?

I shall have a think about it but I'm pretty sure that there isn't... someone is clearly overlooking the brutality of the whole situation if hearing those particular words is "terrifying". It does appear to insinuate many different, rather sinister things to claim that it is "terrifying". It does also tend to give some the impression that they are not viewing others as being worthy as being on their level. The Palestinians are being subjected to brutal terror nonstop yet hearing "Free Palestine" seemingly has such a response on some... It also shows quite the contrast between the two, in all honesty.

This is an absolute shit show and what’s more disgusting about this is the fact that Macklemore was meant to of been a friend of Ed’s, meaning he probably knew ed doesn’t use his platforms and social media for politics and views, his tours and concerts are for just his music for his fans only, but yet the selfish bell end went ahead and chanted his thoughts about it all anyways, when there is a place to do so like his own tours, platforms and social media, because of his selfishness it has now caused issues for ed and has affected his image. Concerts are for music and enjoying a night out, politics should be spoken about elsewhere as there is a time and place for that, Macklemore ‘is a hero’ bullshit makes me angry because the bloke is a prize prick for doing that at his ‘friends’ concert knowing the damage it will do. He knew full well what he was doing and with friends like that you don’t need enemies!!!

Macklemore had said the same things the previous night but went on stage the second night and said it again. Why did Ed himself not cut him after the first night? Ed knows him and knows his views as he has been public about them. Ed only bowed to pressure when the big wigs came in. The videos from the concert showed overwhelming support for what Macklemore said if you go by the cheers and claps.

Marches - Yes, provided they do not call for the eradication of Israel or involve harassment of people who disagree or just bystanders who happen to be Jewish.
Children's art exhibitions - no. Agree no.
Artists/ musicians speaking out - Yes. Fine in their own music or concerts.
sanctioning west Bank - I don't have a view on this, but people can think yes or no as they wish.
recognising state of Palestine - No. Agree no as this involves formally recognising a state with an oppressive and violent government.
Prevention from competing in sporting events and eurovision - No. Agree with no - why should they be prevented.
Waving a Palestinian flag - Yes, but depends on the circumstances.
protesting outside an event selling real estate on illegal settlements - Yes ok, provided it's a peaceful protest.

Thank you for replying to my points

Marches - Yes, provided they do not call for the eradication of Israel or involve harassment of people who disagree or just bystanders who happen to be Jewish.
They need to be policed to prevent and deal with this but no one can guarantee it won't happen, there are thousands marching and there were will be people there not for good legitimate reasons but with a view to cause trouble so does the march go ahead with policing? or do they have to be stopped?

Children's art exhibitions - no. Agree no. Not sure what you agree here, no children's art exhibition or no it shouldn't be pulled?

Artists/ musicians speaking out - Yes. Fine in their own music or concerts.
So you agree in principle but there are caveats...

Waving a Palestinian flag - Yes, but depends on the circumstances.
So yes but there are caveats...bit unclear

Maybe ed thought it was a one off and didn’t expect him to do it again, nobody knows but the point is there’s a time and place for politics and tours and concerts aren’t one of them. If Macklemore felt so strongly about his views and beliefs he should have used his own platforms, social media and tours to do this.

If you know the history of the OP's threads then you would know she most definitely proudly labels herself as 'pro-Israel'.

Fair enough. But what the OP personally believes isn't really my point. It's the constant use of “pro-Israel” and “pro-Palestinian” as though they're necessarily opposing positions that I find unhelpful. I don't think caring about Israel and Israelis requires being anti-Palestinian, or vice versa.

Nope, I liked him and his music but found myself very disappointed with his statement. Like the Desmond Tutu quote says “if you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor”.

Exactly this!!

Wow.

Would you care to specify what 'sinister things' are implied by someone being terrified by hearing 'Free Palestine'?

Would you care to specify why being scared of someone shouting 'Free Palestine' implies that person sees others as unworthy?

Would you care to specify why you feel you can make these judgements about how other people feel? Have you for example walked in their shoes?

I think it should be quite apparent given everything...

Perhaps some people sing the certain words regarding hearing and the iOf as they have had enough of seeing the sheer brutality of their actions over and over. Seeing what happens to children on a regular basis. What pregnant women have been subjected to. The list goes on and on...

...and vice versa of course. Hijackings, car bombs, suicide bombs, stabbings, car rammings, Munich olympics, Achille Lauro, Entebbe (Netanyahu's brother was killed saving hostages), the Ramallah lynchings (the red hand badge at the oscars made me...uncomfortable), Shalhavet Pass and of course 7/10.

But apparently that is the intafada that some idiots are hoping to globalise.

So what should people who oppose the illegal occupation of Palestine say? What's more palatable so as not to offend? What flag should be waved so as not to offend?

The war is over? There are probably hundreds and children dying in other conflicts across the world and the question does remain why are artists fixated on one conflict?.I think it's because they are vain shallow uncritical cynical being who wish to appear 'edgy' to a young audience they wrongly assume are going to be pro Palestine as they are well.....young. October 7th is swept under the carpet.

Also there appears that old anti Semitic trope of a Jewish hidden elite pulling strings in every walk of life (and throw in a paedophile for good measure). But if a 1930s Germany throwback for me.

Maybe some of these 'right on' singers could open up a news website and read about the effectively mass torture and execution of dissidents in Iran.....nah doesn't involve Jews does it.

I'm against all genocides.

Yes there's a lot that people want to control when it comes to Palestine. Easier to cleanse a flagless, stateless people I guess.

@ImmortalNowBabyDoll
And this proves exactly what I was just saying in my post above. You're debating Israel's actions. I'm talking about the experience of Jewish people in an audience who didn't come there to debate Israel. Those are two different things.

There shouldn't be any debate around unequivocally condemning a genocide. Celebrities have been very open about supporting Ukraine in multiple settings- is this "terrifying" for Russian-British or Russian-American fans?

If a Russian British person said they found it terrifying would you tell them that no they don't, it's sinister and dramatic to feel like that?
Or would you accept you don't really understand how it feels to be Russian British and assume they feel like that because of their own reasons?

I do actually have a Russian friend who has some complex feelings on the conflict that I absolutely cannot relate to. Wouldn't dream of proudly invalidating her feelings on it though.

DeterminedRat · 18/09/2026 12:18

KeepOnCleaning · 18/09/2026 09:25

Actually, yes. If an artist supporting Israel – or expressing solidarity with Israelis, which isn't necessarily the same thing – unexpectedly made that part of their support set at someone else's concert, I would completely understand Palestinian audience members saying it made them uncomfortable. I wouldn't tell them it was their own fault for failing to research the support act first.
And we've recently seen calls for Boy George to be removed from performances because of views he has expressed about Israel. I don't remember everyone responding that artistic freedom means audiences simply have to put up with whatever makes them uncomfortable. But I also wouldn't describe this as simply “pro-Israel” versus “pro-Palestine”. That's exactly the binary I'm objecting to. Caring about Israelis doesn't make somebody anti-Palestinian, any more than caring about Palestinians makes somebody anti-Israeli.

But it wasn't unexpected? This is exactly my point. Macklemore does the same at every show. It was completely and totally expected. He has a song called Hinds Hall and one called Hinds Hall 2. If people can't be bothered to research the support acts who else's fault is that? Do you want signs outside of gigs explaining what might and what might not be said?

You keep acting like he was a jump scare instead of an advertised support act that does the same thing at every performance. You don't want him censored so you agree that he had every right to play and say the things that he said. So what did you want to happen so that people who would be uncomfortable with his words would know to avoid him?

dairydebris · 18/09/2026 12:24

Is anyone else imagining the pre tour beers while planning?

Fancy supporting me on my next tour mate?

Yeah sure mate, I'd love that.

Keep the political stuff on the down low though yeah?

You do know I've written a song called Hind's Hall mate?

Yeah, cool with that, but you know, less of the Jewface alright?

Sure, cool, totally got it.

Great, lets do this then.

What did I want to happen? I would have expected the support act at an Ed Sheeran concert to perform their music without turning their set into a political intervention involving war imagery and specifically addressing Jewish members of the audience.

You clearly think that seeing Macklemore's name listed as support means everyone attending should have researched his political performances beforehand and either accepted whatever he chose to do or stayed away. I don't. I think that's where we fundamentally disagree, and I'm not sure there's much more to add.

It’s an opinion in the Guardian. But everyone is allowed an opinion, right?

“Kraft isn’t the only billionaire trying to stifle criticism of Israel and stamp out speech: it’s a prevailing theme of our times. Pro-Israel billionaires like Kenneth Griffin have used their donation money to pressure universities like Harvard to oppose students’ criticism of Israel. Meanwhile our billionaire president and his administration have aggressively cracked down on pro-Palestinian protesters, sanctioned law firms perceived to be political enemies, restricted how news outlets cover the White House, and interfered with academic freedom at higher education institutes.
The Trump administration had also updated its immigration guidelines so foreigners could potentially be denied a green card for expressing anti-American or anti-Israeli political opinions. As the ACLU attorney Jonathan Hafetz has noted: “We are seeing the gravest assault on freedom of speech at least since the McCarthy era.””

Again you cannot tell me and the majority of my community what to be scared off.

When I hear Free Palestine, I wonder if you are someone who (1) cares about peace in the Middle East (setting aside a lack of concern for all other conflicts); or (2) holds Jews in utter contempt (often disguised as anti-Zionism as if they are different).

The Free Palestine chat has been associated with:

The Yom Kipur 2025 murders in Manchester. Just hours after the killings of two Jews outside their synagogue, a pro Palestine march mobilised outside Downing Street. Full of chants of Free Palestine and fuck the Jews. A larger march in central London saw the same that weekend.

The 9/11 attacks. Osama Bin Laden expressly told the west he was motivated by the Free Palestine ideology

The 2025 stabbing of 2 israeli embassy staff in Washington DC where the attacker shouted Free Palestine

The 2025 US firebomb attack on a walk for the hostages. Again the attacker shouted Free Palestine

there have been many more incidents than the ones I mention avoided. There will be more in the future
