Conflict in the Middle East

To feel sorry for Ed Sheeran.....

So Ed Sheeran's tour is in tatters simply because he believes music for entertainment and personally he likes to keep politics out of it (as many many stars do).

Simply because his support wanted to highlight the oppressed people of Iran and the use of capital punishment to stifle dissent support wanted to bring up Gaza without any reference to the start of the war due to a massacre on October 7th and Ed didn't want that he is suddenly the bad guy? Perhaps Ed succumbed to sing of thinking of Jews in the audience and the connotations of 'Free Paelstine' he is now on the naughty step of virtue signallers.

So all those Sheeran fans could lose out seeing someone they have waited months to see because some humpty has to jump on the Gaza bandwagon with a few trite soundbites as part of his act (because hey the ME isn't complicated) to look a bit radical or whatever. Bloody disgrace.

I’ve just seen Macklemore in that Jew stereotype costume. What the actual fuck…

Exactly ... but he has integrity apparently.

No, he's antisemitic and has been for years.

Fine to make political statements at his own shows (not to dress up as a cartoon Jew, obviously) - not ok to do it at someone else's show.

Ed Sheeran isn't known for being political and is trying to remain neutral now.

No not at all

He expected parents to bring their kids to a concert to listen to the political ranting of a support act (when all they wanted was an enjoyable pm of music)
Macklemore didn't make his point on one night but a subsequent night so Ed knew this had happened and let it go.
The public are sick to death of woke celebs pontificating at music events. Its beyond awful whats going on in Gaza and in Israel but like leave it out . Young teens there families. They didn't buy tickets to a lecture.
Ed has been squeaky clean and his image is tarnished / not depending on what ' side' you are on.
Im sure Ed will be just fine.

I disagree with everything you've said apart from the end statement.

Ed WILL be fine. He's protected by his wealth. Good for those with less for standing up for what is right.

Pressure has to come from somewhere. The US needs to wise up. It was late to wake up to the Nazi's in WW2 and millions more died because of it. It REALLY needs to wake up now. Or at the very very least, start to care and stop supporting the oppressors.

Christ, I don't think Tutu was referring to pop stars was he. Talk about taking a comment so far out of context!!!

Tutu was talking about people. Singers are people.

theiblis · 17/09/2026 07:27

All it takes for evil to happen is for good men to do nothing. He needed to speak up and support Macklemore… he would not have harmed his career in anyway doing that. He’s hung a fellow artist out to dry by either being a coward or being part of the problem.

likelysuspect · 17/09/2026 07:26

Dexternight · 17/09/2026 07:24

Coward.

Fucking hell it's not a political show!!!

mids2019 · 16/09/2026 16:46

He did not say anything against the people of Gaza. Ed simply decided he didn't want a political dimension to a concert. It is simply bullying to not support musicians right to not get involved or wish to say silent. Maybe Ed does support the people of Gaza who knows but he made a moral decision to not have political statement at a gig and people should repect that.

Coward.

I'm on Macklemore's side he should be able to stand up for what he believes in rather than others that jump on the bandwagon of what am I supposed to pretend to care about today it's all about image for Ed Sheeran and also the cash the side he picked is cash 😕

You’ve got this upside down. The music industry is now polarised, with top artists effortlessly filling stadiums whilst the rest struggle.

Macklemore is about playing to and growing his audience, which are mainly people in their 20s and 30s who are drawn to his activism vibe. For this demographic, 65% or more support the Palestinian cause. He likely truly believes in the cause, but if a publicity team wanted to design a way to grow his revenue, this is a good way and will more than cover the cost of his donation. There is a lot of pressure on mid level artists to make sales with the continued cost of living, so people like him are looking for ways to enter the top tier.

Ed Sheeran’s net worth is at least ten times Macklemore’s. He’s made his money already, has nothing to prove, and his fans are a broader spectrum politically. He has all the advisors in the world and if he’d wanted to be uncontroversial he could have just said something about supporting free speech. But he didn’t.

It’s all calculated when there’s this much money at stake, believe me.

Nope, I liked him and his music but found myself very disappointed with his statement. Like the Desmond Tutu quote says “if you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor”.

Christ, I don't think Tutu was referring to pop stars was he. Talk about taking a comment so far out of context!!!

Well at least Mackelmore has the integrity to put his money where his mouth is:

With everything that has happened over the last 48hours, I want to bring the conversation back to where it belongs; to the Palestinian people who are still being killed, still living under military occupation, and still fighting for their freedom.’
‘I invite Robert Kraft to match my donation,’ Macklemore added, ‘Whatever we disagree about, perhaps we can agree on this: Palestinian lives are worth protecting.
‘A Palestinian life is no less valuable than any other life on this earth’.

Somehow I don’t think Kraft will be keen to do the same.

He's announced hes giving 2 million dollars to the "region" as well as ed Sheeran is.
And and also said he has "I have dedicated much of my life to building bridges between all people" and created opportunities for Palestinians.

mids2019 · 16/09/2026 16:51

It is a hideous kind of bullying to suggest you either stand with the 'cause' or be cancelled. Reminds me of some of the trans stuff.

Ahhhhh OK. Right wing agenda.

Ed is a millionaire. He'll survive.

The guy who forced Ed's hand, Robert Kraft, is a Zionist who had ties to Epstein. So it was hardly a 'keep politics out of music' situation.

The US needs to wake up to the world's perspective on the Palestinian genocide.

mids2019 · 16/09/2026 22:40

Well looks like Ed is carrying on. Simple statement that deaths in both side of the conflict are a tragedy which is fair enough...a lot more people can relate to that than at Semitic call to disassemble Israel (Free Palestine).

I am sure that are going to be rabid pro Palestinians calling him an Israeli schill....

Massive Ed Sheeran fan @mids2019 ?

For people who were also victims of genocide the Jews seem to have short memories and a huge lack of empathy & compassion.

There it is in black in white, for anyone in denial about the antisemitism that is shamelessly posted on mumsnet these days.

From the very start of Ed’s career, he said in interviews that he doesn’t discuss politics or religion because his father advised him against doing so. I remember him saying it many times over the years.

I think it’s sad he’s been dragged into this. He just wants to do his job which is to be a musician and entertain people.

He will come through it, most of his fans just want to hear his music and can see that he seems to be one of the good ones.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 17/09/2026 02:44

I don't blame Ed Sheeran for any of it, he's just caught in the middle.

I think very little of musicians using politics to promote themselves.

Among them were Finneas, the brother of pop star Billie Eilish, who said in a statement: "Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed."

Oh fuck off you overprivileged, tedious little twat!

queenofarles · 16/09/2026 17:41

did he say he hates Jews? Or did he say he’s against genocide , apartheid and Israeli occupation and aggression?

Well a few years ago he dressed up as the stereotypical Jew. Don't think he was being kind. So thats quite telling, imo

Boboin · 17/09/2026 02:27

Good luck to Mr. Sheeran for doing the right thing.

But this is exactly how Pakistan was created, at much the same time. Millions were displaced, tens of thousands died. It was more violent than the creation of Israel.

What's the difference other than that in India BOTH sides (more or less) accepted the new status quo, helped the new arrivals on both sides of the border integrate into their new country instead of still calling their children and grandchildren "refugees" decades later, and just set about building their own country.

And when conflict has broken out between the two, it's between soldiers on both sides - not kidnapping civilians from their homes or raping girls at concerts.

And for the most part, it's the Palestinian Arabs who have refused to do the same thing in Palestine.

Do you see any wrongdoing on the Palestinian side at all? Do you think Israel has always been the sole aggressor, since its inception?

Do you know that Jews are also indigenous to the Middle East? Or do you think they’re all white European settlers?

A large portion of Israeli Jews are Mizrahi - indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa - who fled to Israel after being violently expelled from Arab nations.

Palestinians have repeatedly been offered their own state and rejected it again and again.
What’s the point in presenting an extremely complex conflict in such a simplistic, black-and-white manner?
