Conflict in the Middle East

To feel sorry for Ed Sheeran.....

1000 replies

mids2019 · 16/09/2026 16:19

So Ed Sheeran's tour is in tatters simply because he believes music for entertainment and personally he likes to keep politics out of it (as many many stars do).

Simply because his support wanted to highlight the oppressed people of Iran and the use of capital punishment to stifle dissent support wanted to bring up Gaza without any reference to the start of the war due to a massacre on October 7th and Ed didn't want that he is suddenly the bad guy? Perhaps Ed succumbed to sing of thinking of Jews in the audience and the connotations of 'Free Paelstine' he is now on the naughty step of virtue signallers.

So all those Sheeran fans could lose out seeing someone they have waited months to see because some humpty has to jump on the Gaza bandwagon with a few trite soundbites as part of his act (because hey the ME isn't complicated) to look a bit radical or whatever. Bloody disgrace.

I'd say that they're entitled to feel their feelings but it's inappropriate for them to try to make this about their feelings right now. Talk to your therapist about your conflicted feelings about your country invading another country and brutally murdering civilians. Don't expect anyone else to be worrying about you instead of the civilians being massacred.

I don't believe for one second you'd talk to a friend like this.
I definitely wouldn't.

I honestly believe that if Israel did not keep oppressing the Palestinians as they have done since day one, there wouldn't be a need for the Abraham accords or anything else. You do know Iran still has a Jewish community. This is exactly why I absolutely hate the idea of any theocracies. They are the source of all the evils in the world while pretending to be some kind of righteous soul saving ideology.

That’s quite ironic, considering that Israel was attacked by five of its neighbours ‘on day one’.

If Jews were to quit Israel now, it would turn into another failed state like Syria with various factions slaughtering each other. Hamas and the other factions would turn it into a blood bath.

Who's asking Jews to quit Israel? What's the point of your post other than being quite derogatory of non Jewish people living in the region?

That would be a brutal way to speak to a distressed Palestinian, even after the invasion of Israel and massacre of civilians there.

Generally, most people don't like going to a concert or other performance to hear a sermon, especially when delivered by multi millionaires who own yachts, private jets and have multiple mansions in different countries. Roger Waters is one example.

But it is quite complicated when Iran funds terrorism in Gaza to try to destroy the homeland of Israel isn’t it?
How can you sympathise with the Israeli desire for a homeland but not recognise the threats that surround that homeland?
You only seem aware of the suffering and threats faced by Palestinians?

Edited

Israel gets billions in foreign investment to defend its homeland. The international community do not stand by and watch it get destroyed. It is very much supported and protected as it should be. The Palestinians are losing their homeland in both the West Bank and Gaza and are being ethnically cleansed, the international community is doing nothing to prevent this. There's the difference. People don't need to protest to get support for Israel it's there they're getting it, international governments support their existence and their right to maintain it. What is being done by the international community to prevent ethnic cleansing? To prevent further annexation of Palestinian land? Very very little and whatever they do do such as sanctioning the illegal settlements they're criticized for it.

If a Russian British person said they found it terrifying would you tell them that no they don't, it's sinister and dramatic to feel like that?
Or would you accept you don't really understand how it feels to be Russian British and assume they feel like that because of their own reasons?

I do actually have a Russian friend who has some complex feelings on the conflict that I absolutely cannot relate to. Wouldn't dream of proudly invalidating her feelings on it though.

I'd say that they're entitled to feel their feelings but it's inappropriate for them to try to make this about their feelings right now. Unfortunately there has been a terrible attitude from many, many Zionists who have continually felt compelled to share the extent of their beliefs. This is one of the issues many people actually have with it. Just look at some of the many, many public comments made by certain individuals regarding this.

‘Zionism’ has now been co-opted by extremists and anti-Semites. Like ‘Free Palestine’. I just say I believe in Jewish self-determination instead.

It’s an opinion in the Guardian. But everyone is allowed an opinion, right?

“Kraft isn’t the only billionaire trying to stifle criticism of Israel and stamp out speech: it’s a prevailing theme of our times. Pro-Israel billionaires like Kenneth Griffin have used their donation money to pressure universities like Harvard to oppose students’ criticism of Israel. Meanwhile our billionaire president and his administration have aggressively cracked down on pro-Palestinian protesters, sanctioned law firms perceived to be political enemies, restricted how news outlets cover the White House, and interfered with academic freedom at higher education institutes.
The Trump administration had also updated its immigration guidelines so foreigners could potentially be denied a green card for expressing anti-American or anti-Israeli political opinions. As the ACLU attorney Jonathan Hafetz has noted: “We are seeing the gravest assault on freedom of speech at least since the McCarthy era.””

Guardian journalists are very happy with Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE buying up real estate in this country, football clubs and having undue influence over Government policies. Or China donating large sums to UK universities and even having their spies here. Far more influence than the Jewish/zionist menace they're obsessed with. But then they're leftie anti semites.

The thinking seems to be that if Israel were perfect everything would be fine. Or maybe if Israel conceded on every negotiation point it would be fine. In 1967 maybe they should have just sat there and let the Arab states annihilate them.

It’s laughable to suggest that the Arab states, Iran and the Palestinians themselves have absolutely no culpability here.

Whoisit101 · 18/09/2026 16:50

Zionism has different connotations for different people. What would you call the Zionism that supports Netanyahus beliefs, that include the ethnic cleansing of gaza to another person's Zionism who doesn't support genocide or ethnic cleansing? I'm not being facetious.

I think everyone agrees that Zionism means the right of Jews to a homeland in Israel.
There are valid arguments about the extent of the homeland and the treatment of the Palestinians etc but surely the initial premise is one we can agree on ?

In which case why would you say a “Zionist sympathiser” should never be heard from again”

I sympathise with the Zionist desire to have their own homeland.
I also sympathise with the Palestinians who are terrorised by settlers .

Plenty seem to like to ignore the fact Iran does has a Jewish community, sadly. It does not seem to fit the agenda of many

Well it’s a classic case of actual apartheid though isn’t it?

Peace in the Middle East is obviously an admirable phrase but it says nothing for the need of the Palestinians to have equal rights, self determination and freedom from persecution.

Come on I’m sure you can think of something.

It all depends on your interpretation of zionism which was just discussed on another thread. If it means Jews have a homeland alongside Palestinians with equal rights and privileges, they were very wrong. If, on the other hand, it means the Jews having a homeland at the expense of the Palestinians who would have to exist with no fundamental rights, no self determination and no freedom from persecution, they were very right.

What an odd reply. Others were referring to your post where you said:

There is no need to tie yourself in knots and invoke the plight of the Palestinian children to excuse the fact that you called for anyone who sympathises with Zionists (people who believe the Jews should have a homeland in their ancestral land) to 'never be heard from again'.

That's quite the triplejump reply there...leaping over the slaughter and murder of children, only to happily land in the nice warm spot of feeling offended by words or push back on someones revulsion of a genocide regardless of religion or culture.

Why do think people globally feel the need to shout Free Palestine or rebuke Netanyahu ? .....because of the plight of a people made to queue for food only to be gunned down in that queue by the same people.

Is there any acknowledgement that no matter what your views on Israel or Palestine and their rights to their land, that this is a genocide.?? ..baring in mind it has been adjudicated as such internationally. I don't feeling sorry for someone offended by words I'm feeling sorry for the children carrying their parents body parts in a bag.

I don't hate Ed sheeran, ...do I want to hear from him offering some weak mealy mouthed excuse for his current stance , no I do not, that's my choice. What I found baffling was the 'horror' my words generated by far exceeded the horror felt for the annihilation of a nation of people....now that's appalling.

It's odd that people say 'Free Palestine' is completely baggage-free and no one should have any qualms about hearing it, when it is quite obviously used as a form of anti-Semitic abuse. People shout 'Free Palestine' at Jewish people just walking down the street.

I don't know why so much energy does into denying that there are bad actors who use pro-Palestinian campaigning. Why not divert that energy into encouraging use of different slogans that are more difficult to co-opt? 'Peace in the Middle East' is a good one.

Peace in the Middle East is obviously an admirable phrase but it says nothing for the need of the Palestinians to have equal rights, self determination and freedom from persecution.
