Iranian clerics call for assassination of Trump and Netanyahu

Article in The Telegraph reports that Iran’s most senior clerics have called for the assassination of Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a 10-point statement, the Assembly of Experts said the killing of “the criminal American president” and “the wicked prime minister of the Zionist regime” was a religious duty.

Assassinating the two leaders – whom they described as mahdour al-dam, or deserving of death – “must not be neglected under any circumstances”.

In their call for Mr Trump and Mr Netanyahu to be assassinated, the clerics wrote that avenging the blood of Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader who was killed on the first day of the war, remained “paramount”.

“It is obligatory upon any duty-bound person who gains access to these criminals to send them to hell,” they added.

The language read like a religious edict but stopped short of a formal fatwa, which in Shia Islam is issued by an individual cleric in his own name rather than by a group.

The Assembly of Experts is an 88-member body of clerics constitutionally tasked with choosing and supervising the supreme leader.

The statement shows how fractured the establishment has become.

Only about 63 of the body’s members signed it, and the Assembly’s secretariat distanced itself hours later.

I think people shrug because there is no way this is going to be carried out ( apart from in an AI generated Lego video). Also because it feels like there are no good guys involved, the Iranian regime are tyrannical and murder their own people to force conformity, Netanyahu is responsible for the ongoing genocide of the Gazan people, Trump is well Trump enough said there really.

Whilst I don’t wish anyone dead, if the Iranians were to enforce “regime change” on the U.S. and kidnap Trump. They could have a photo shoot of him in the back seat a la Manduro. Sadly that would lead to Vance 😱

JadeHare · 01/07/2026 10:44

And I think it fell short of actually being a fatwa. This time.

It’s not the first time they have said it. They first said it in 2020, and yet the idiot is still alive. Much like Trump’s idiotic blustering, I’d take it with a bag of salt.

Take it with a pinch of salt or even a bag until some religious nutters decide it is their duty to follow the instruction to kill Trump or Netanyahu.

Have you forgotten? Trump and Netenyahu have already done it.

No I haven't forgotten but I'm surprised so many people on here are basically shrugging their shoulders over an instruction to murder by a supposed group of religious clerics.

The timing seems especially surprising - not at a time war is starting but at a time when it is supposedly ending with Iran and the US both having signed the Memorandum of Understanding and sending negotiators to discuss peace.

If Trump or Netanyahu get assassinated as a result of the Iranian clerics and their religious edict, God knows what would happen but it wouldn't be peace! It really would unleash hell onto the world.

Do you agree then with assassinations of other world leaders that have done things many consider criminal? There will be quite a few of them. Putin for one but many others of course.

What if Trump decided to assassinate world leaders he considers to be criminal?

Would people be saying, to be fair .... or would they be saying who does he think he is to call for the assassination of other countries leaders?

Trump and Netanyahu had the Iranian supreme leader assassinated. The CIA and Mossad have been assassinating leaders for decades and installing their own governments. Does world history not get taught anymore?

People don't take Trump's rhetoric seriously anymore unless he actually commands his officials to do something. You have to go by what he does not what he says. And speaking of violent rhetoric, similar things have been said on the Iranian side like the chanting in parliament last November of "Death to America" and "Death to Israel".

This call by the Iranian clerics for the double assassinations is somewhat different as it has been dressed up as a religious duty. This gives instruction for Islamist extremists around the world to attempt to murder Trump & Netanyahu.

Of course the Iranian leaders say awful things and they are abysmal people, the way they treat their people is barbaric, I’m not surprised by anything they say.

Trump and Netanyahu and their governments are held to a higher standard with what they say because they are leaders of democracies. Both, still are despicable men. Not taking Trump’s rhetoric seriously because he is Trump is not an excuse, if our prime minister said he would end a civilisation, I can’t imagine he’d have a job in the morning.

Didn’t Trump say “a whole civilisation will die tonight” or something along those lines about the Iranians? Thats a worse thing to say imo

All of them are lunatic men, who will probably say more unhinged shit about each other. I don’t wish death on anyone but I wasn’t sad when the Iranian leader was killed and I certainly wont be said when Trump and Netanyahu die either 🤷‍♀️

Apparently so.

Religious dictatorships, fatwas and religious fanaticism seem fair and understandable as long at they are directed against Trump and Netanyahu.

If you condemn it for one side, but are ok with it for the other, then you are not a person of principle, but a person who advocates for violence.

SpareMe · 01/07/2026 08:12

Are we really supporting religious dictatorships, Fatwas and religious fanaticism on Mumsnet now?

These Clerics are WAY worse than either.
The Iranian regime is indefensible.
Propaganda really has done a number on the UK It clearly rots your brain.

it isn’t an “Iranian perspective”. Iranians still aren’t allowed a perspective, they are living under an authoritarian religious regime ruled by militant, women hating, nutcase, power mongers promising heaven to dangerous brainwashed men.

They routinely mass execute their own people without trial (or sham trial) for dissent.

i think from irans point of view it’s perfectly reasonable as they have had their leaders and potential leaders killed. Generally speaking I think killing leaders is a bad thing I think, although perhaps if we just got all of the leaders who wanted a war into an MMA ring with a knife each, rather than armies and civilian deaths, it might calm them down a bit and then everyone could just get on with their lives.

I don't agree it is perfectly reasonable coming from religious people who are using religious beliefs to incite others to murder.

Though I do like your idea of the MMA ring and agree it might calm down a bit all these men who want to settle disputes with wars & attacks which civilians get dragged into.

I am against violence of all sorts. Especially political violence. And that religious leaders should say these things is both shocking and disgusting.

Talking of religion, did anyone see the news about Trump addressing the Faith and Freedom coalition conference on June 26th 2026 ? His main faith leaders were there. Here is the vid and transcript.

Speech: Donald Trump Addresses the Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference - June 26, 2026 — Trump Archive (trump-archive.com)

Here is an example of what he was saying. It went down very well with the faith leaders apparently. Well, none of them walked out, or resigned from his commission over it.

DONALD TRUMP 00:22:39-00:23:10 (30 SEC)
You know, we hit them very hard. We knocked out their leader, we knocked out their second leader and their third leader. Sounds a little bit like Iran, actually. That's all about a different cause that we have to do, because we cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon, can't let it happen. So I'm saving Christians throughout the world, even though we are not in those various countries where you read about this, but they'd like to make our country just like those countries.

That is Nigeria he is talking about. On Iran he said this :

DONALD TRUMP 00:30:53-00:31:36 (43 SEC)
Their rocket launchers have been cut by 90 percent. Their leadership has been killed a first time, and their leadership has been killed a second time. And nobody wants to be the leader of Iran anymore. They said, who would like to be the president? And everyone said, no, thank you. [Laughter] It's amazing, and then the fake news, like The New York Times, which is a failing publication, but the fake news, ABC is so bad, ABC television network, fake ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, they actually said for a little while it didn't play well that Iran was much stronger today than it was four months ago.

Yup. That got a laugh from the Cardinal and bishops and pastors.

Ahh, sorry to digress. Back on subject.

Yes, it is disgusting that religious leaders condone political violence. Thankfully The Pope takes a stand against it.

Talking of the Pope, did anyone see the news about Trump and Vance v The Pope.....

It's more than not a great sign for peace - it could cause the peace talks to collapse.

What do you think about it being dressed up as a religious duty for civilians to try to murder other countries leaders? They will go to prison for attempted murder (assuming any attempt fails) not the clerics.

Well yes I was being a bit flippant when I said “not a great sign”.

I think that I expect nothing better from the leaders of a country with such an awful human rights record. This year alone Iran has executed dozens of political prisoners. I’m more concerned about that than for any attempted murder charge an attempted murderer might face.

Twiglets1 · 01/07/2026 07:51

WhatAMarvelousTune · 01/07/2026 07:46

Obviously it’s not a great sign for peace. But it’s also not wildly surprising that a country not known for having peaceful policies and whose leader was killed by the US and Israel has senior figures who would like to retaliate.

Bring it on. They deserve it. The amount of pain they have inflicted on innocent people.

Did you say the same thing when the assassination of the Iranian leader happened? At least that was done by the military not told it was a religious duty of civilians.

There was a lot of criticism of the killing of Khameini on this board, IIRC.

Presumably the same posters will condemn this call to kill Trump and Netanyahu also.

It’s not exactly taking the heat out of the situation.

Twiglets1 · 01/07/2026 07:31

The US & Iran are supposedly in the middle of peace talks.

Although it’s nothing new on Iran’s side, it’s a strange time to call for the assassination of Trump. Or not strange I suppose if the hardliners don’t want peace at all. But this a group of supposedly religious clerics .. calling for others to commit murder on their behalf.

They have both gone into other countries where they didn’t agree with the regime and killed the leaders so not sure why it’s so different. Any mature intelligent adult would look at history and see that this has never worked but I guess there in lies the problem….
