Pakistan were a good choice of mediator as evidenced by the fact that a 2 week ceasefire was agreed.

But someone has made a mistake - whether Iran/Pakistan or the US.

I don't think it was Israel since Netanyahu's office has been clear from their first statement that as far as they are concerned, the two-week ceasefire does not include Lebanon.

Which Trump has confirmed today.

Israel has clearly decided is does not want a ceasefire in Lebanon, although interesting that Netanyahu’s office also originally also seems to have agreed to the ceasefire.

Prime Minister’s Office:

Israel supports President Trump's decision to suspend strikes against Iran for two weeks subject to Iran immediately opening the straits and stopping all attacks on the US, Israel and countries in the region.

Pakistan has a mutual defence treaty with Saudi Arabia- it’s absolutely in their interests to pursue peace.

Yes - they have positive relationships with Iran.

Did you do a similar search for Pakistan’s
relationship with the US under Trump?

Surely this good relationship with both made Pakistan the perfect mediator?

Your belief in the Trump press office is remarkable.

I know who I believe- Trumps press office following a day of extremes bad press about the ceasefire deal versus Pakistan who says not continuing to bomb Lebanon was part of the ceasefire deal.

Pakistan is a US ally and would have no reason to lie.

Pakistan is no ally of Israel's and is a better ally to Iran than to the US:

Iran–Pakistan relations

Pakistan has also provided support to Iran in the Iran–Israel proxy conflict and served as a mediator in the Iran–Saudi Arabia proxy conflict.

Iran has also historically voiced support for Pakistan in the Kashmir conflict with India. After the U.S. complete withdrawal of its troops and the Taliban return to power in the 2020s, Pakistan stepped up cooperation with Iran to promote peace and stability in Afghanistan. Iran has also expressed an interest in joining the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor as part of the larger Belt and Road Initiative.

On the other hand, Pakistan is one of the few countries where Iranian influence is positively received as per polls conducted by the Pew Research Center. Polls have consistently shown that a very high proportion of Pakistanis view their western neighbour positively. Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Khamenei had also called for the sympathy, assistance, and inter-cooperation of all Muslim nations, including Pakistan.

White House reiterates that Lebanon is not part of the ceasefire

Lebanon is not part of the ceasefire deal and “that has been relayed to all parties”, Leavitt says.

She refers to a statement from Benjamin Netanyahu last night in which the Israeli prime minister said he supports the “efforts” related to the ceasefire and says he will continue to be a key partner in the negotiations.

Asked if Lebanon could potentially join a ceasefire deal, she says:
Again, this will continue to be discussed … but at this point in time they are not included in the ceasefire deal.

US went into the war to support Israel but Israel not willing to support a ceasefire the US wants.

What a mess.

Interesting how Iran seems to be dictating terms despite the rhetoric coming out of the US.

Israel does not want Lebanon to be included in the ceasefire.
Iran does and states it was part of the ceasefire deal.
Iran says that it won’t open SOH until Israel stops bombing Lebanon.
Unclear messages came from the US about what was in the ceasefire agreement.

Who to believe?

The mediators were Pakistan and said that Israel not continuing to bomb Lebanon (250 people killed there today) was part of the ceasefire agreement.

Netanyahu's office doesn't agree as they posted this on X overnight:

Israel supports President Trump's decision to suspend strikes against Iran for two weeks subject to Iran immediately opening the straits and stopping all attacks on the US, Israel and countries in the region.

Israel also supports the US effort to ensure that Iran no longer poses a nuclear, missile and terror threat to America, Israel, Iran's Arab neighbors and the world.

The United States has told Israel that it is committed to achieving these goals, shares by the US, Israel and Israel's regional allies, in the upcoming negotiations. The two-weeks ceasefire does not include Lebanon.

Yes, I’m aware of that. But clearly the original announcements agreed by Iran and the US included Lebanon and was agreed on behalf of allies.

So if that is what Iran signed up to then there won’t be a ceasefire.

Maybe the US shouldn’t have spoken for Israel. They are two separate countries not one.

Time will tell if Iran break the ceasefire because of Lebanon.

Or if Israel agrees to stop attacking Lebanon during the 2 week ceasefire.

Thks for posting that announcement.

I think the freedom of the seas bit might be an issue if Trump sets up his joint venture with Iran to charge.

Yes insurance & safety concerns will affect the number ofnew ships going through I imagine, until there is a permanent ceasefire in place.

But don't forget many ships have already been trapped there for some time - they need to go through.

I agree, I am just pointing out that, as per your post, the US are waiting for the Strait to be open before declaring a ceasefire, but I'm saying I don't see how the Strait can be considered any more open than it is now without a ceasefire.

While it's excellent news that Trump has stepped back from obliterating a civilisation, the world economy is in much the same place as it was 2 days ago.

Pakistan said Lebanon was part of the ceasefire arrangements. So why is it still being attacked?

Because Israel were not part of the 2 week peace deal that was agreed between Iran and the US.

What Netanyahu's office said was that they support the peace deal with Iran but not Lebanon.

Pakistan were only the mediators between the US & Iran, that is all.

But surely shipping companies and their insurers would need to see a well established ceasefire in place before risking sending cargo, vessel and crew through?

Seeing headlines like this doesn't make the situation seem that much different from 2 days ago. The only change is a commitment to talks on friday, but what has changed "on the ground" for exports through the region?

I did just hear (Times radio) that no one wants to get stuck if things break down so some are holding off.

My understanding is that the "closing" of the Strait is mostly due to the risk posed rather than a physical blockade. If bombs are still dropping has the risk decreased enough for it to be now be considered worth the risk/"open"?

Reuters report the US as saying that the ceasefire will start when the SoH opens.

A senior Iranian official involved in the discussions earlier told Reuters Tehran could open the strait on Thursday or Friday ahead of peace talks.

But any opening would be conditional on a framework for the ceasefire being agreed, and be "limited" - with ships still requiring Iran's permission to pass.

There is no guarantee of any final deal, no.

If I was a betting person I would put money on it though. I think it is clear both the US & Iran want an end to the war now. As things stand they can both claim some victories and I'm not sure there would be anything to gain for either side in resuming the war.

Israel are in a different position to the US with regard to Lebanon so they would probably prefer to continue fighting Hezbollah (if Trump allows them to).

Reuters reporting several ships told Hormuz still closed... danger of attack.

Iran has now said it will pull out of ceasefire if Lebanon is still attacked.
