“Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir wore a noose pin on his lapel to signal his support for the bill”

I first heard about this on Facebook and thought it might be anti-Israel fake news. But no, it’s true.

Absolutely horrifying and sickening.

Palestinians convicted of lethal attacks face death penalty under new Israeli law

The new law, passed on Monday, was pushed hard by the far-right and Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

This is all so far from our Government

News story
Joint statement on Israel's Death Penalty Bill: 29 March 2026
English
العربيَّة
Statement by the Foreign Ministers of Australia, Germany, France, Italy, New Zealand and the United Kingdom on Israel's Death Penalty Bill.
From:
Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and The Rt Hon Yvette Cooper MP
Published
29 March 2026

We, the Foreign Ministers of Australia, Germany, France, Italy, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, express our deep concern about a bill that would significantly expand the possibilities to impose the death penalty in Israel and that could be voted into law next week. We are particularly worried about the de facto discriminatory character of the bill. The adoption of this bill would risk undermining Israel’s commitments with regards to democratic principles.
The death penalty is an inhumane and degrading form of punishment without any deterring effect. This is why we oppose the death penalty, whatever the circumstances around the world. The rejection of the death penalty is a fundamental value that unites us.
We urge the Israeli decision makers in Knesset and Government to abandon these plans.’

🤨
im sure Netanyahu and the Israeli Government are really scared and they’ll stop

Sorry, I really should stay on topic.

This is a really clear article about why it is discriminatory and why the UK government has an obligation to act.

https://www.hrw.org/news/2026/04/29/israels-discriminatory-death-penalty-law-requires-uk-action

The U.K. havent done anything of substance and I doubt Starmer ever will

‘A UK-based advocacy group has urged the British government to impose sanctions on 62 Israeli lawmakers over legislation introducing the death penalty for certain offences.

The International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) said Monday it submitted recommendations to the Foreign Office targeting the parliamentarians over alleged responsibility for serious human rights violations.

In its submission, the group argued that lawmakers’ support for the legislation could breach international law, citing concerns over the right to life and protections against cruel or degrading treatment. It called for sanctions under existing UK frameworks, including the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018.

“The new penal law which exclusively and purposefully targets Palestinians, marks an extreme escalation in Israel’s genocidal policies against Palestinians and consolidates Israel’s apartheid judicial system, embedding racist discrimination against Palestinians into law and once again allowing Israel to violate international norms,” the group said.

The ICJP described the law as discriminatory against Palestinians and urged Britain to adopt what it called a “preventative” approach by acting before the measure is enforced.

“If the Foreign Office adopted ICJP’s sanctions recommendations, it would send a clear message,” the group said, adding that stronger action is needed beyond expressions of concern by Western governments.
Orlaith Roe, the group’s public affairs officer, said: “The UK has both the responsibility and the leverage to act.”

“In apartheid South Africa, 95% of people sentenced to death were Black. Thanks to this law, in apartheid Israel, 100% of people who will be sentenced to death will be Palestinians.

“The cost of inaction will, once again, be measured in Palestinian lives,” Roe said.

Israel’s Knesset passed the law in late March, making the death penalty the default punishment for Palestinians in the occupied West Bank convicted of lethal attacks against Israelis.
Under the law, executions would be carried out by hanging by prison guards appointed by the Israeli Prison Service, with those involved granted anonymity and legal immunity.
The legislation also mandates transferring those sentenced to death to special detention facilities and restricting visits to authorized parties, while meetings with lawyers would be limited to video communication.
It allows courts to issue death sentences without a request from prosecutors and does not require a unanimous decision, permitting rulings by a simple majority.

The law also applies to military courts handling cases involving Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and grants the defence minister the right to present an opinion before the court.’

I do it myself it’s hard not to when ‘some things’ are being thrown out
i hate the tactic to divert
I hate the fact we can’t just have a conversation about Israeli injustices

Anyway that’s my last 🤐

No ones even commented on Israel extending the death penalty to the West Bank !!!

Israel's Discriminatory Death Penalty Law Requires UK Action

The Israeli parliament’s new death penalty legislation, adopted on 30 March 2026, is discriminatory by design, and applicable primarily, if not exclusively, to Palestinians in practice.

I won't reply to anymore posts on this thread. No point since any answering posts on a slightly different topic gets a standard 'back to the thread response' however, it appears some don't listen to their own message to do that.

For what it's worth. I don't agree with the death penalty and have said so before. Best to unwatch lots of these threads since posters don't want people to reply to some of the comments they themselves make 🙄

It isn't "anti Israel" to discuss the war in Gaza or in Iran but there is more nuance to it than just Israel = Bad, and it's the lack of nuance that can on occasion be anti Israel. For example, the war involves not just "what Israel does to Palestinian & Lebanese people" but also what Hamas and Hezbollah does or tries to do to Israeli people.

In your opinion it's anti Israel. People are talking about what is happening to the Palestinian people at the hands of Israel, shining a light on their suffering. Some people think that its OK to not have an 'all lives matter' approach to threads and just to focus on one particular set of victims on one thread.

Like that long running hostage thread, it is fine that it just focused on one very small set of victims rather than have an 'all lives matter approach' and have to mention all of the other victims of the conflict or give context as to how Palestine has been illegally occupied for decades, how Hamas were formed etc.

In your opinion that isn't fine but that's just your opinion, not fact.

They 'ran away' from here. 🤔Maybe they didn't like the nasty tone some posters take. Maybe, they were fed up of the hatred afforded towards them when they have down nothing wrong. Jewish people on MN and in the UK aren't responsible for the conflict in Gaza.

Jewish people are not a collective mindset. Many posters don't defend all the actions of the IDF and do criticise them for various acts or wanted the conflict to end sooner, everyone has different opinions. It seems Jewish people cannot win, so perhaps they took a break from what can be a pretty nasty section of MN. Numerous posts have been deleted over the years and some are frankly disgusting.

A rise in anti semitism in the UK is recorded and we've seen terror attacks here in the UK against innocent Jewish people. However, bringing the hatred to Jewish people in other parts of the world eg Australia (terror attack) the UK (terror attacks, isn't helping anyone including the people of Gaza). A political party in the UK (Green) has 2 members arrested and being investigated for their comments about Jewish people. Antisemitism isn't nice and it isn't clever and if I was Jewish I'd probably stay away (not run away) from this section of mumsnet for different reasons than you suggest.

Stirabout · 30/04/2026 15:09

Twiglets1 · 30/04/2026 14:55

If you disagree that there have been lots of antisemitic comments, then why have so many posts been deleted after MN considers complaints about them? It's not like MN just deletes every post that gets reported without considering whether it has actually broken site rules or not.

Speaking for myself, the main reasons I report posts are firstly antisemitism or general racism, and secondly personal attacks.

This is my last comment on the derail
Massive pile ons in the early days
Mnet delete if lots of people complain that they are hurt by comments.
It doesn’t mean antisemitism and this has been discussed to death on mumsnet for years !

This thread

is about
The Israeli death penalty

I’m done with this derail
and I will discuss the abhorrent actions of the IDF and the Israeli Government as much as I see fit. I will not feel I have to caveat that with anything else to make anyone on here feel better about what the Israeli Government are doing
in Palestine
in Iran
in Lebanon
and in Israel

It is 'anti Israel' in your opinion to discuss what Israel does to Palestinian and Lebanese people, other people feel that it is important that what is happening to Palestinian and Lebanese people, the attempted ethnic cleansing, the sexual violence, the wanton destruction of their property etc is spoken about. They see it as helping to highlight what the victims are going through.

There also may be families of those victims here on mumsnet.

All needing to hear they have support because you wouldn’t think it from the way the U.K. Government have been acting

Oh yes
I didn’t say Theyve completely left Mnet.
Why would they unless they only joined for the CEM threads
I occasionally recognise a username here or there.

Having been on the threads since Oct 7th I disagree that there are
‘so many antisemitic comments’
Pro Israelis regularly think many comments are antisemitic when they are not at all
but that conversation has been had a trillion times and
just another derail again. We won’t agree on it Twiglets so whats the point

Perhaps unpleasant things being said about the Israeli Government and their actions and the IDF and some of their actions are justified.

After all. It’s not just mumsnetters on here who think that.

As I said upthread
Its hard to justify it anymore

@Boolabus at 8.03 today Marty said Calling out the horrendous actions of a government does not make you anti that country .

I replied: But an obsession with that one country does.

You then called me a hypocrite for saying that because you think I have an obsession with one or two countries. You base this opinion on me starting threads - even though my threads are general ones rather than ones comparable to This is the reality of what Israel is doing now (part 7). That is a thread that is anti one country; my threads aren't like that.

I took the implication to be you believe I am anti the countries I am "obsessed with" because I start threads on this board about wars Israel are involved with in Gaza or Iran.

They are still on Mumsnet though - you find them on other boards - so they haven't run away from wanting to talk about the issues. They are proud to be Jewish people living in the UK, but obviously sad & frightened by the rise in antisemitism in society.

They've just run away from this one little corner because things that are said are so unpleasant and so many antisemitic or nasty comments need to get deleted.

(less so now, I think a few of the worst offenders got banned thank God).

Because it exists you join debates that help the thing keep on growing?

Seriously, if you don't enjoy the debates then step away from them.

I too would prefer these debates were more mainstream because it can feel a bit hostile on this board tbh and the pro Israel supporters are outnumbered. Not many Jewish people ever post on here - have you noticed that? When I post on AIBU there are far more different opinions expressed and it's a more welcoming space for Jewish people to talk.

But - the board existed before I first posted on here a couple of years ago and it will continue to exist I expect for as long as there is conflict in the middle east.

Out numbered? really?

Pretty much everyone is pro Israeli, apart from a few crackpots the vast majority support Israel's right to exist flourish in a peaceful environment.

What (some) people are against is this slaughter of Palestinians/Gazan's and now the Lebanese.

It is beyond me how (some) posters on here cannot condemn the 80k + killed in Gaza and the almost wholescale destruction of homes, hospitals, power & water facilities.

Twiglets1 · 30/04/2026 13:55

Boolabus · 30/04/2026 12:47

This is all opinion though. You think that people are making threads purely to attack Israelis. In your opinion your threads don't purely attack Gaza or Iran but I'm sure you can see that some people might have a different opinion on your very frequent postings on anything but the wrongdoings of Israel. They might have an opinion just like you have of others on your posting off topic across most threads that discuss Palestinians as victims. Some people see a post talking about Palestinian victims and think shit that's really horrible, this should be spoken about and amplified, others see those posts as demonising Israelis and want all discussion shut down/changed and don't really see the victims that are being spoken about at all. It's just different perspectives.

My point was only that I personally have never started a thread purely to attack Gaza or Iran, because @Boolabus seemed to think I am anti those countries (if we can call Gaza a country for the purposes of this debate) just because I start threads about the war in Gaza or Iran.

If I have an obsession, it's with terrorists that attack other countries for decades via proxies. Nothing to do with Palestinians generally, or Iranians either.
