“Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir wore a noose pin on his lapel to signal his support for the bill”

I first heard about this on Facebook and thought it might be anti-Israel fake news. But no, it’s true.

Absolutely horrifying and sickening.

Palestinians convicted of lethal attacks face death penalty under new Israeli law

The new law, passed on Monday, was pushed hard by the far-right and Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

If a Jewish Israeli committed treason against the state of Israel, would he be exempt from the death penalty because he was Jewish?

No, same for Israelis in courts in Israel as for palestinians in military courts in the West Bank. Granted we don't see israeli suicide bombers and terrorists but in theory the same penalty applies.

Their time will come where they will be accountable for the attrocities in Palestine.

You can run but not hide.

I really bloody hope so! 🤞

The charge would have to be terrorism with intent to erase the state of Israel.
Terrorism to stop any Palestinian state that’s not covered by the law.
Terrorism to annex parts of Lebanon and Syria, not a problem.
Terrorism to ethnically cleanse Palestinians or Arab Israelis that’s ok too.

This law is custom worded to only apply to terrorism by Palestinians.

You didn’t read the ICJ ruling did you? They quite clearly say from its founding it has been an apartheid state.

Also, despite the fact that it is over 30 pages, and therefore it's a bit of a cheek from you to expect me to read the whole thing on your say-so, I now have looked through it, and no "they" don't clearly say that at all.

Because the overall conclusion doesn't say it. It's also only an advisory opinion, not a legally binding ruling, but that's a separate issue.

Some of the judges made their own additional and in some cases dissenting reports, and some of those do mention the word apartheid - but in some cases it's to say that Israel did NOT commit apartheid, and in others to say they did. But none of those are the actual ruling anyway.

So tell us: had you not read the document you were expecting me to have read, or had you read it and just decided to lie?

Well then, my question applies to the ICJ ruling too (it wasn't clear from your post which only mentioned what's happening now): in what way was the foundation of Israel "apartheid" in a way that the foundation of Pakistan or Saudi Arabia is not?

I imagine it is because of the right of the Jewish diaspora to live there, which does not apply to others even if their ancestors may once have lived in the place that is now Israel. To call this 'apartheid' is such a stretch as to appear entirely cynical in my view.

It's similar to calling the partition of India and Pakistan apartheid.

Because we expect Israel to be better than their neighbours?

Or that used to be the case.

I guess the 7th October put paid to that.

Saudi Arabia are a strong ally of the UK. We collaborate with them on defence, trade, energy etc. They also have major issues with misuse of the death penalty, particularly discriminatory use against Shi'a muslims. In fact it is well known that shias suffer systematic discrimination in Saudi. Interestingly, we don't hear a lot from 'anti-Saudis' that it is an apartheid state or that it is disgusting.

So while I agree that this is a horrible and important issue, I am also interested in how selective it seems to be. It can't be just chance that all the threads on the 'middle east' board just happen to be about Israel, with 90% being anti-Israel.

Yes fair point well made, I had noticed that.
Selective lefty outrage it seems.

But that's not the same allegation as the poster's, which was that Israel has always been an apartheid state, by the very nature of its founding documents.

So by that measure, so is Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Algeria, Egypt Jordan, Kuwait etc etc - and of course Palestine, since Article 4 of the Basic Law of the State of Palestine says "Islam is the official religion in Palestine."

And most of those other countries base their legal system on islamic law, and generally punish proselytism or atheism, sometimes severely.

From a constitutional point of view, Judaism is not actually the state religion in Israel.

I am positive they do not. The ICJ legal opinion that Israel is practicing apartheid is not based on there being an official state religion.

I know this is not the subject of the thread, but I'm always puzzled by this: do you consider that any country with an official state religion to be an aprtheid state? Because by that measure nearly all muslim majority countries are also apartheid state yet the outcry against them seems to be a lot more muted.

Israel has always been an apartheid state. It’s what the founding of the Jewish state is based on.

The difference is that nowadays they don’t even try to pretend that they are not.

Many were combatants and as been said repeatedly on these threads hamas hide among/are accepted and encouraged in the community so therefore civilian casualties are sadly unavoidable.

No one has 'done a genocide' as we see bleated all over sm. They've got rid of thousands of combatants and if they use the death penalty on those captured well, as said, many other ME countries do exactly the same.

"Many were combatants"

Of the 80,000 approx how many? not from the IDF but from independent sources....

The only people who say Hamas or in Hezbollah hide in amongst civilians are the Israelis, who have a very wide definition of who "Hamas" is....

Could be a news journalist, a farmer who was in paid employment but left Hamas a year ago, so they bombed all his cousins and aunts... maybe a hospital where an injured Hamas terrorist is being treated, so in the IFD's eyes, that justifies the total destruction of that wing of the hospital, inc the maternity unit next door.

But i've a feeling we wont agree...

The new law is to be used in the military courts which are only for Palestinians. Jewish defendants are in civilian courts where this law will not apply. HTH.

If you look at the actual wording of the new law, it doesn't single out any ethnic group. There is concern that this may be what happens when it is implemented. However, as I said upthread, there are other countries (Saudi) that do exactly the same - use the death penalty disproportionately on some groups that are less favoured. There is no outrage about that and never has been.

Someone said that we expect better of Israel, but why? They're nothing to do with us. They are an ally, as is Saudi Arabia, and they are certainly more western than places like Saudi, but culturally Israel is very different. It's not unprecedented for a democracy to become more repressive, sadly. Why are posters here so concerned with it?

Everything I have read has said the law relates to people convicted of killings only eg this from Amnesty.

In the West Bank – excluding East Jerusalem – the law imposes the death penalty as the default sentence for those convicted of intentional killings classified as acts of terrorism under Israeli legislation, allowing life imprisonment – and life imprisonment only – in “special circumstances” that are not specified in law. Military courts may impose capital punishment by a simple majority, even without a prosecutorial request. Sentences cannot be commuted or pardoned and must be carried out within 90 days. Notably, Israeli settlers in the West Bank are explicitly excluded excluded from the scope of this provision.

https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2026/04/eu-israel-adoption-of-death-penalty-law-by-the-israeli-knesset-requires-urgent-eu-measures-joint-statement/

Yes, and I am saying that Palestinians have been convicted of killing someone without there ever being any evidence presented or any defence allowed. The military courts do not provide fair trials.

'Not sure why you have then started ranting on about Hamas'

They tend to come up when Israel is discussed. Who knew mentioning terrorists was a 'rant'? They are closely linked, did you not know about the conflict?

The point, which you have managed to miss, is that this law specifically singles out an ethnic group. That is the unacceptable bit.

  • 'The sentence will be applied by a military court to anyone convicted of murdering an Israeli "as an act of terror".Such courts try only West Bank Palestinians, who are not Israeli citizens'*

What am I missing?

Yes oppose the death penalty world wide, I'll join you but the argument that it's just the palestinians targeted is incorrect.

Yes we've seen this happen in Iran and Gaza among other places, mass executions of civilians without trial.

Israel law enforcement is far superior as is their judicial processes so I doubt they'd execute innocent civilians, difficult as we know hamas all professed to be Doctors and journalists but Israeli intelligence are again superior so know exactly who is who.

Yes we have seen it in many places that carry out the death penalty, it’s medieval that it’s still in practice in any country.

I wouldn’t say the Israeli law enforcement system is far superior, they are just better at hiding their wrong doings.

Not sure why you have then started ranting on about Hamas, I never mentioned them (they are scum),You say - but Israeli intelligence are again superior so know exactly who is who. If that’s the case then they could have been more careful whilst dropping bombs on thousands of innocent civilians.
