Conflict in the Middle East

Should the international community sanction Israel over settler violence in West Bank?

The problem of Israeli terrorism is getting worse and worse. Just over the past few weeks amongst other things Israeli terrorists have killed multiple people, commited sexual assault, beaten and threatened to rape young Palestinian girls, continually attacked the residents and property of the only remaining fully Christian town in the West Bank, stolen 100s of sheep from the Bedouin community, beaten activists who are there to provide a protective presence to Palestinians, set fire to property.

Palestinians don't have the right to defend themselves from this violent, rapidly escalating Israeli terrorism. They can't arrest and detain the Israeli terrorists. They are sitting ducks with no means of protecting themselves from beatings and sexual violence. Is it time that the international community steps in and sanctions Israel until they can control their obvious terrorism problem? What else can be done to try and protect innocent people from this escalating Israeli violence?

@OpenScroller ,

‘Jordan should let them in. It has enough room and was the Arab State created out of the British Mandate anyway.

Palestinians lived peacefully under Jordanian rule previously, so much so they didn't feel the need to lobby for their own State. They have no leaders who legitimately want peace with Israel while Hamas and the PA have a stranglehold.’

Do you think telling people to just move to be with ‘their own people’ is acceptable? How would that precedent look to the diaspora, all immigrants who have made their homes elsewhere. Sure, Israel would let me in! Only one problem, I am British in law and by culture, not Israeli.

Expelling Palestinians by force would be an invitation to antisemitism and pogroms on the diaspora.

Don’t be ridiculous! We want peace, not endless self perpetuating prejudice.

Do you remember when Israel were killing children collecting water and posters here were like 'why would they do that deliberately, I don't believe that they would kill children deliberately, they have no reason to'. This is WHY Israel have been killing children deliberately. They want Palestinians gone, simple as. It's such a pity everyone didn't listen years ago when people were saying that this was their intention. So much loss and suffering could have been prevented.

I do remember that. Same as the children murdered while queuing for supplements. I read a piece recently about the woman whose baby was shot at her breast. Heartbreaking to think of her pain in that moment.

Maybe the question of wouldn't you want your children to be safe could be reframed as we will murder enough if your children that you will want to go.

No, you must have misunderstood me - easily done I guess.

Terror attacks against Israelis in the WB have long been unreported in the MSM.

I don't believe the Israeli farmers are to blame for all the violence either.

It's not 'brave' and 'strong' to poison defenceless animals so they die a painful death, put traps out for dogs, set wildfires, throw rocks at cars to cause car accidents, stab people in the back, and stage propaganda videos to claim you are the victims.

It's pathetic and cowardly IMO.

Especially when the reason you are apparently 'occupied' is because you refused to declare your own State and chose even more cowardly terrorism instead.

Oh dear. No, no misunderstanding on my part.

In fact, I think all the posters on this thread can understand you and your agenda very well.

So you mean that some, brave Palestinians, living in a long occupied territory, have been strong enough to fight back against the invaders and now the Israelis are complaining? Got it!

Jordan is a peaceful country and the international community will give billions to set up infrastructure and services. Millions of the Westerners protesting for Palestinians will also want to help.

WTF? They could live peacefully in their own country if Israel backed off. I can’t believe people like you exist to be honest.

Didn't they deliberately start the war by invading and committing genocide in Israel though? You can't argue about the intent there, can you?

The only reason they don't live peacefully in their country is because they keep rejecting one. 2008 was the last time I believe.

Now why would someone airbrush those well known facts out of their narrative?

I know many people like you exist.

Israel is not going to roll over and let itself be annihilated so Palestinians can take all the land and make it Muslim again.

Palestinians have never shown any intent to make peace because they want all the land to make it Muslim again.

So why do you think Palestinian kids should continue to suffer and be indoctrinated for an evil ideology that uses them as human sacrifices for a failed cause?

Please explain your rationale.

The percentage of people who want the UK to continue to support Israels clear ethnic cleansing is clearly very, very low. So why the reticence? @FloralDeerPattern

There’s such a pervasive dissonance isn’t there. Someone on this board once said that Palestine was making people ‘mentally ill.’ Anyone who is around young people in the UK can see that they are utterly confused by life. It isn’t the Israel/Palestine situation in isolation obviously but I can certainly see how this is compounding distress. The undermining of the moral codes by which our children were brought up - watching those in power turning a blind eye/lying to justify atrocities which they can clearly see live-streamed daily - these kids aren’t stupid.

Hmm, who to believe?

The Israeli military stated that its forces had entered the village to provide security for an Israeli civilian and police trying to retrieve livestock.

It said the forces fired on and struck what it called "key instigators" of a "violent disturbance", in which Palestinians threw stones at its troops.

Loads of videos on X that never make it to MSM showing Palestinians attacking Israeli farmers, letting sheep out of fields and pushing them onto their land, evidence of poisoning cattle and setting land ablaze to cause wildfires. Rock throwing and stabbings as well of course.

I don't think the violence is one sided.

There's no point in denying it they are saying it themselves with no shame.

Israel’s defence minister has said his country is seeking Donald Trump’s support to approve plans to expel Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.

It's what they wanted from the start.

The genocide and ethnic cleansing continues - impossible to understand how anyone could continue to deny it.

Not just how any one could deny it, but how anyone could not want action taken.

One has to wonder why the British government are not acting on the wishes of the population.

62% of UK adults want economic sanctions on Israel, only 18% oppose this.
65% want all arms sales to Israel banned, only 11% oppose this.
60% support an end to the UK Israel trade agreement, 16-18% oppose this.

The percentage of people who want the UK to continue to support Israels clear ethnic cleansing is clearly very, very low. So why the reticence? Its an easy win, you stop supporting ethnic cleansing and you gain the approval of the majority of the adult population?

The IDF kill 2 teenagers who were trying to defend their flock from Israeli 'settlers' and demolish a whole village with no prior warning leaving 70 people and over 20 children homeless. The families who have been cleansed from the village have roots there that predate the state of Israel, it is the 66th Palestinian community to be ethnically cleansed by Israeli authorities since October 2023. When is enough going to be enough?

Haaretz today:

"This government will not acquiesce in the destruction of the two-state solution," he said. "We will act and I will set out a comprehensive set of measures in the coming weeks."
He said Prime Minister Andy Burnham had discussed taking further action to ban trade in goods from Israeli settlements, adding that the government was working across departments and with its international allies on its response.”
“"If you are for the two-state solution and you see it being destroyed by the facts on the ground, you must act. And I can assure you, we are going to," he added.
Miliband also said that "we do not want British companies financing, constructing or advertising new settlements. The work we are now undertaking is how we can stop that."”
On Tuesday, Gideon Sa'ar, Israel's foreign minister, said on a podcast that Israel would retaliate if Britain took measures against it over settlement expansion, warning that such a move would amount to interference in Israel's upcoming election. "If Britain acts against Israel, Israel will act against Britain."
He did not specify what measures Israel would take. "We have the tools to respond. What I've said is enough. We are preparing. I hope they don't make a mistake. If they do, there will be a response."
“The Financial Times reported several days ago that Israel was considering expelling British representatives from the Gaza coordination center in Kiryat Gat in response to Britain's criticism of the E1 settlement plan - and potentially to measures London itself is considering over Israeli settlements.
A diplomatic source who spoke with Haaretz said such a move would be problematic because Britain has the third-largest delegation at the Kiryat Gat center, after the United States and Israel, and a British commander also serves as the center's deputy commander.
According to the diplomat, expelling the British delegation could also create problems with the United States, since Israel would effectively be undermining an initiative the Americans established.”
“Miliband's remarks come after leading British Jewish organizations this week urged the government not to impose sanctions on Israeli settlements.
U.K. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis met Miliband recently and warned on Sunday that such measures would be "counter-productive," while the Jewish Leadership Council and Board of Deputies of British Jews also raised concerns about their potential impact on the country's Jewish community.
Bloomberg reported earlier this month that the British government is considering banning trade in all goods and services with Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The report followed Israel's publication of a tender for 1,200 housing units in E1, between Jerusalem and the Ma'ale Adumim settlement.
Miliband previously called the E1 tender an "unacceptable and destructive act" and said the government's response could include sanctions targeting those involved in settlement expansion.”

Palestinians need protection from the daily onslaught from these terrorists until full sanctions are in place and Israel puts the brakes on land theft and violence. There needs to be an international presence in the WB And EJ in the interim.

The only protection they have currently is from a very brave group of activists and journalists. The world watches while this band of young people put themselves between the Palestinians and the thugs that terrorise them on behalf of the Israeli government which fully endorses, funds and legitimises their actions.

Meanwhile Western resources are instead deployed in a pointless war at the behest of Israel, which is simultaneously embarked on the destruction of Lebanon, accumulating a catalogue of war crimes which mirror their Gazan strategy where health services snd journalists are deliberately targeted and huge explosions are designed to cause mass destruction.

But this is all apparently permissible because sanctions will hurt ‘ordinary’ people Are the Palestinians and Lebanese not ordinary people?

Apparently not. As @FloralDeerPattern says, it racism. Some people's lives are worth more than others.

It's a crazy one, innocent Israelis get killed by terrorists and people sit back and watch as tens of thousands of innocent Palestinians are killed and starved in return. Innocent Palestinians are killed and suffering under sustained attacks by Israeli terrorist 'settlers' and oop we can't sanction Israel, can't even eject them from sporting comps because that's seen as too harsh?! If anyone can come up with a logical reason for this other than racism I'm all ears.

Apologies as I've just realised that my ""too little too late" comment re Netanyahu condemning settler violence was actually made on a different thread.

We both know that if the Israeli government wanted to put a stop to the violent settler/terrorists, the IDF could do it in a minute. The fact they haven't acted and the terrorists face no consequences means any talk of condemnation by Netanyahu is just performative.

It's meaningful in a way which is that it shows he cares about Israel not getting international sanctions.

Beyond that - yes we agree that the Israeli government could put a stop to settler violence if he cared that much about it.

Did I say that? No I didn't.

I was just answering your question about Is he condemning them or is he thanking them.

He has actually done both in recent days.

Agree the condemnation rings hollow which is why I made a point of saying "too little too late" and also that it will be "just empty words" if none of the rioters end up in jail.

No consequences for the terrorists.
