Conflict in the Middle East

I need to say this out loud

As a British citizen I am disgusted in the utter cowardice of my own government at the moment. If you are an American citizen please believe that there are people in the UK who have no respect for the way we are distancing ourselves from what is happening in the Middle East.
Your government has backbone and courage and wants to do the right thing for all our children’s futures.
I applaud Trump for standing up for his country, military, citizens of Iran…the world, and he doesn't care who he might offend in doing so.
It’s such a pity the same can’t be said for our ‘leader’. I am actually ashamed of my country at this moment in time. I truly hope this changes over the coming days/weeks.

I agree that this of asking for support after started a war is not on. No plan and consultation beforehand. But, now, after the fact. Just like this. Or our leaders are called one version or another of hero and coward. Spain has taken the most of Trump's anger amongst those opposing.
And how many times have Trump and JD Vance stated they would not help Europe if they start another war? Because we have to learn to defend ourselves and stop starting wars.
Plus, Trump is now telling us that he is asking the Kurds to help him. They already got hit once, by Iran, in retaliation to this talk. But.... do they really want to meddle in this? Have they declared war on anyone? Do they really want yo get involved and squashed, yet again, by the 4 countries they are divided amongst? I have not heard their side of this story told in the press yet.
The Pentagon tells one story, Trump other, Rubio points at other.....
Zero organisation. Zero.
I am happy with UK's response. Keep us out of offensive actions. The right approach for what is going on at present.

whereisitnow · 05/03/2026 11:39

I think they should not have attacked. I’m no fan of Iran, their rulers are hideous, but the war might not be legal, it’s going to cost ordinary people here in uk a fortune and there will possibly be long term consequences. It has spread to other countries. There was no consultation, just demand for support after the fact. It’s certainly not a popular war. Israel is too pugnacious, imo, as is their great mate Trump.

Yeah well so could Iran, beginning with not shooting their own citizens.

Nice deflection.

Yes stupid Israel 🙄I mean terrorists tend to cause terrorism, and sadly sometimes they succeed, whether in the UK, Israel, or elsewhere.... but carry on blaming the victims, go you 👏

A friend worked for counter terrorism and said he was always worried about the one they didn't stop. They have an endless battle to keep us safe, one slip and terrorists win and people blame the ones who didn't stop it......rather than the terrorists and their backers (Iran).

Victim blaming at its finest.

Yes it is a coincidence ... there are always scandals being uncovered and Trump could have started a war many times if he wanted to since the Epstein case began.

Talk about simplifying a complex situation! Not to mention the war will not stop the Epstein files being investigated.

Exactly. Its a ridiculous idea. As if people in the US suddenly can't think about anything but the war?! Its a conspiracy mindset.

They didn't get official warnings like Iran did that if they didn't agree to certain demands, then being attacked was a likely option.

Israel have acknowledged that they can learn lessons from 7/10/23 about not being vigilant enough to the threat of Hamas attacking them but they didn't know it was coming. If they did they would have done more to defend their own people since Israel do, as everyone knows, take defence very seriously.

They could have done much better to protect their citizens.

Is what a coincidence? People have been calling events a distraction from Epstein files for at least the last 12 months.

Any evidence whatsover that the driving force for the war is the Epstein files?

Of all the batshit theories this one is the craziest.

It's just a coincidence then?

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 04/03/2026 07:16

I believe we absolutely should not be getting involved.

Let’s not forget the driving force behind Trumps involvement: The Epstein files. Nice distraction from letting the world see the truth about who you really are and what you have done.

Sorry but I have to point out that Israel did have warnings of the imminent attack. From their own ranks and Egypt. They did have warnings. They failed to acknowledge them properly.

Sorry but this has outraged me. You're supporting countries whose first action was to kill over a hundred young girls in a school with their so called super accurate missiles. Gross.

It is not clear yet whose missile rained on that school. I am not sure we will really know till the end of this conflict.
Bless them all.

MushMonster · 04/03/2026 06:45

Twiglets1 · 03/03/2026 15:06

What do you mean they have not needed them? They got attacked by Hamas on 7/10/23 with no warning, if you remember - a bad enough attack that it triggered a war.

If they were actually genocidal/the most dangerous country in the Middle East/ a terrorist state and other charming descriptions, they could have used those weapons to kill all of Hamas in Gaza, and all the civilians with them.

Sorry but I have to point out that Israel did have warnings of the imminent attack. From their own ranks and Egypt. They did have warnings. They failed to acknowledge them properly.

ThankFuckTheSunIsHere · 04/03/2026 01:22

Then why the fuck is he letting them use our bases?! Absolutely ludicrous.

Because he agrees with what they will be used for, which is defence.

We are allies of the countries that Iran are attacking. The main goal is to destroy Iran's missile launchers. Sir Keir said the basis of the decision to accept the US request was the "collective self-defence" of allies and protecting British lives, accusing Iran of pursuing a "scorched-earth strategy".

The prime minister added the US would use UK bases for the "specific and limited defensive purpose" of destroying Iran's missiles "at source".

Actually for once I think Starmer is right. Getting dragged into a war is the last thing we need.

What information sources do you have access to in order to formulate your opinions?

Your batshit conspiracy theory was that Trump started this conflict in order to distract from Epstein.

You failed to produce any evidence to back up this nonsense. When challenged on this your response is - well
what evidence do you have that there isn't any evidence?

The answer to which of course is, the evidence of something not existing is that it doesn't exist!!

Enrichetta · 03/03/2026 22:55

Well as a British citizen, I am glad we haven't just jumped in and started dropping bombs just because America has told us to. Have we not learnt any lessons from previous wars in the Middle East?

THIS.

Totally this. Especially since Trumps delusional justification of this insane war keeps changing – from Iran planning a preemptive strike to lobbying by Israel. He has dementia and the Israelis have manipulated him into doing their dirty work for them - he literally makes it up as he goes along.

ActoBelle · 03/03/2026 22:52

In the not too distant future this will probably be viewed as an illegal war. Starmer quite rightly was being cautious. Now Iran has started firing missiles left right and centre there’s justification I guess…..before that, not so much.

I mean it’s only a few weeks since USA bombed Iran’s “nuclear weapons programme facility “ and Trump declared it a total success. So if such a success why does Trump need to attack Iran now? What has Iran actually done? And he can’t use human rights stuff against their own people as an excuse or he wouldn’t have left Afghanistan in the mess it’s in. Plenty of other worse countries than Iran as well. Trump isn’t doing this for the Iranian people so let’s not pretend he is.

And remember this a president who recently kidnapped the president of another country (and his wife) on very odd charges and currently has them locked up in New York. If Putin was acting like this we’d be up in arms. Imagine if Mark Carney sent a task force to Washington, kidnapped Trump and helicoptered him back to Ottawa and locked him up because after all drugs pass over the border from the USA to Canada. According to Trump logic Canada would be justified.

He’s a dangerous man who makes no sense, does what he wants without any attention to international law. he may not even have abided by his own constitution about discussing this with Congress before acting.

WTF?! Even Americans don’t approve of Trump’s war. Recent polling shows that this is deeply unpopular. He’s a nutter.

The UK needs to stay well out of this.

1dayatatime · 03/03/2026 21:49

Dontgetfooledagain · 03/03/2026 21:05

Not at all @1dayatatime, I'm just pointing out that despite all their machinations the body count has been (thank God) very small. They are not a major threat to us and - in my opinion anyway- we need not be so eager to send our troops into battle just because the orange shit demands it.

You didn't specify how many British lives you'd be willing to sacrifice btw. How many would be "worth it" - and what would "it" be anyway?

In many ways it's irrelevant because after decades of defence spending cuts the UK would be unable to contribute anything militarily even if Starmer wanted to.

In terms of how many British military lives would be acceptable, clearly the ideal answer would be none.

But it does raise the question of what is the point of a military when the RAF Akrotiri base gets attacked (which is UK sovereign territory) and the response is nothing.

Or should the UK be involved in providing Navy vessels to protect shipping against Iran in the Straits of Hormuz? This isn't attacking Iran, it's simply stopping civilian shipping being attacked?
