Israel stopping 35 NGOS from working in West Bank or Gaza

It is quite possible that organisations are sometimes infiltrated by members of terrorist organisations.

The Israeli forces have accused our Palestinian colleague Fadi Al-Wadiya, whom they killedyesterday while on his way to work at the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) clinic in Gaza City, Palestine, of being a “significant operative” of the Islamic Jihad armed group. We have no indication that this is true and received no direct communication from the Israeli authorities about it before they published their accusation through a tweet after his assassination.

An MSF employee in Gaza, Fadi Al-Wadiya, was revealed to be a senior operative of Islamic Jihad and an expert in rocket systems, as evidenced in the MSF Belgium report and corroborated by IDF publications.

Another staff member, Mahmoud Abunejeila, has publicly expressed support for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

Under Section 7.1(3) of the guidelines, Israel can deny an organization that has members who are terror operatives or who maintain ties with a proscribed terror group.

Maybe they are just trying to protect their own staff, considering how many aid workers have arbitrarily been killed throughout this conflict. They are clearly not wanting to put a target on their backs.

What conflicting points of view. MSF, a well respected medical institution used to going in and aiding in incredibly difficult circumstances around the world are now employing terrorists?

Something to hide? Hmmm.

That's a shame. Response from Israel Foreign Ministry:

Humanitarian status is not immunity. Due diligence saves lives.

Turns out Doctors Without Borders has something to hide. Rather than accepting transparency, meant to protect all parties, MSF prefers to withdraw from Gaza.

Given they employed terrorists we suppose this is understandable.

We will ensure the relatively little medical work they did is covered by the agencies willing to ensure not to give refuge to terrorists.

If international journalists were allowed in, surely the burden of humanitarian workers to bear witness would be eased as less emphasis would be placed on the conditions of silence in order to continue their work?

Humanitarian workers have a duty to bear witness when international law is being broken.
Increasingly, humanitarian partners are being forced to make a choice between being the “voice of the voiceless” or being permitted to do their work at all.
This pattern must end. No humanitarian should ever have have to make this compromise.

Also included in MSF statement:
‘In the midst of the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and extreme violence against healthcare workers, Israeli authorities are forcing humanitarian organisations into an impossible choice – forced to choose between sharing this information about our staff or interrupting critical medical care.’

Journalists must be allowed in.

The Meh comment was in response to you saying I was missing the point.

MSF have decided they will meet the new requirements & continue to work in Gaza after all.

Even if we agree on little else we should both be pleased about that. I for one hope some of the other NGOS on the list follow their example.

Meh ... MSF are playing ball now anyway and I'm sure we are all pleased that they will be providing healthcare in Gaza & the West Bank despite their earlier posturing.

Pretty obviously they know that they aren't really endangering their staff just by providing Israel with their names and personal details. And the staff know it too or they wouldn't have agreed to it.

Still time for a few other NGOs to backtrack as well and remember their priority should be providing humanitarian aid.

Missing the point

MSF agreed to provide staff details following extensive discussions with its Palestinian colleagues according to The Jerusalem Post.

MSF says that 15 of its workers have been killed since October 2023.

Israel, however, claims that MSF maintained active ties to designated terrorist organizations and “practiced advancing an extreme anti-Israeli narrative under the guise of humanitarian activity.”

According to ministry documents viewed exclusively by The Jerusalem Post, an MSF employee in Gaza, Fadi al-Wadiya, was revealed to be a senior operative of Islamic Jihad and an expert in rocket systems, as evidenced in the MSF Belgium report and corroborated by IDF publications. Another staff member, Mahmoud Abu Nejeila, has publicly expressed support for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

The documents also said that, “despite repeated and explicit demands,” the organization did not provide full transparency regarding the identities, roles, and activities of those individuals.

This meant that none of the organization’s four branches, MSF Spain, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands, provided comprehensive staff lists – including details of Palestinian employees – as explicitly mandated by the registration guidelines.

Yes it must have been really easy for MSF to make the choice between endangering their staff or withdrawing this crucial aid. No conflict there at all.

Hopefully some of the other NGOs refusing to supply the required information will now follow the example of MSF ... it turned out not to be that hard after all.

Doctors Without Borders agrees to provide Palestinian staff list to Israel in order to overturn ban

As an exceptional measure, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has agreed to provide Israel with a full list of its Palestinian and international staff in order to be able to resume operations in Gaza and the West Bank.

MSF made the announcement on Saturday, just over three weeks since Israel announced the ban on 37 NGOs from operating in Palestine due to failure to register in time. Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism Minister Amichai Chikli also claimed that security investigations had determined that employees of certain international organizations operating in Gaza were directly involved in terrorist activity.

MSF initially refused to provide such a list, claiming that it had concerns about the safety of its staff.
