Almost 70% of verified deaths in Gaza between Nov 2023–Apr 2024 were women and children

I remember reading this update/revision in 2024;

The United Nations has revised down the figure it publishes for the proportion of women and children killed in Gaza.

On 6 May, the UN said that 69% of reported fatalities were women and children. Two days later, it said this figure was 52%.

'The insistence on bodies' what do you mean by this? Are you referring to the deal whereby Hamas committed to return all the bodies of hostages they murdered to their families, 2 years after they were brutally kidnapped?

Hamas are derelict in that duty for not allowing people into the safety of the tunnels

At the time of writing this Hamas has returned 4 bodies, one of which isn't a hostage.

And where are the women hostages?

It seems Hamas are not sticking to the agreement.

If they don't, then in Trump's own words "All bets are off"

Is it happening or is it just another lull? The insistence on bodies now and the pressure Israel is trying to exert by blocking aide and borders seems as though they still believe they can commit war crimes without worrying about any consequences.

The abruptness to get Hamas to respond and Israel to listen is there with Trump. It then takes the detailed work of all those working on it too, not least the Arab states. Qatar, Egypt etc

Being responsible for your citizens doesn’t give you a free pass to starve, bomb, or displace.

Israel’s blockades, bombardments, and refusal to let people flee have collectively harmed civilians- especially children. Almost 70% of verified deaths in Gaza between Nov 2023–Apr 2024 were women and children. And that’s not even counting the documented cases of babies and children being shot while trying to reach food, aid, or shelter.

Deliberate or not, the result is the same- civilians have been killed on a massive scale.

A government of a country is primarily responsible for the security of their own citizens.

Security concerns don’t justify collective punishment or change the fact that the blockade has created a severe humanitarian crisis, especially for children.

I agree that it will take so many people trying for peace in such very abrasive circumstances that it is daunting. The denial of abhorrent behaviour on both sides has to stop and an almost inhuman strength drawn on. I don’t think Trump has the level of integrity needed, but if it must be him then everyone must work even harder because he isn’t known for taking the harder path.

I haven’t refused to talk about anything. I’ve addressed repeated assaults, the blockade, and the wider context of occupation. The point I’ve been consistently making is that civilians, especially children, are dying in huge numbers, and that this humanitarian crisis is real regardless of why the blockade was imposed. Shifting the focus to who started it is just pathetic.

Wow. Comparing two million civilians- half of them children- to “vicious dogs” really says more about your mindset than theirs.

Dehumanisation always comes before mass killing. You might want to reflect on why you feel comfortable using that language.

Funny how you mention the blockade, yet refuse to talk about the reasons why it was implemented (not just by Israel btw, but also by Egypt).
And talking of repeater assaults, did they only ever come from the Israeli side or did Palestinians launch attacks too?

I think it’s such a big problem it’ll take all kinds of people adding to the solution. Someone linked other administrators who sound moderate.

It needs everyone aiming for lasting peace.

I’m not about to go back through decades of occupation, blockade and repeated assaults that have kept Palestinians trapped in a cycle of violence since 1948. It just blows my mind that people still talk as if this all began on October 7th.

That sounds more positive.

I don’t really think “teeth” is what you look for to move away from the swill of trauma being acted out in the Middle East. I personally think Trump has little understanding of the players and is definitely seen as pro Israeli. Is that you going to help going forward?

Why was the blockade against Gaza implemented? Could it have anything to do with Hamas being voted in there?
