There is quite a lot of noise coming out of Hamas.

I think it will be Hamas that won’t honour (a word they don’t understand) the ceasefire and will continue to maintain power, and the IDF will be full justified in targeted attacks.

The original poster I was replying to as I have said, seems to be denying any of it and was putting it down to chronic illness, and that the only starving person they had seen was a hostage; that was my point.

Look at the pictures now coming out of Gaza with an open mind and you will see the Gazans thankfully do not look starving, they do not look like the pictures we have seen elsewhere of people living in famine conditions. We don't need journalists to interpret that for us.

And I never said every single child we have seen pictures of had underlying issues. Though they often seemed to after the individual cases highlighted by the media were investigated in more depth.

Again, I don't deny and have never denied widespread food insecurity in Gaza with malnutrition affecting many people and in particular the most vulnerable such as babies and children. What I am specifically questioning is the narrative of widespread famine in Gaza.

I don't think it's bad to question why the videos coming out of Gaza celebrating the ceasefire contain so many healthy, well-fed looking people when we have been previously repeatedly told that there is no food.

We've also been told that there was food but it was being hoarded by Hamas. Perhaps the people in the videos were able to get the food but elsewhere there are people who were not able to. The living conditions in Gaza are undeniably terrible.

I've recently seen videos/reports on twitter that Hamas are now going through Gaza and executing their opponents (Palestinian, not Israeli). No the poster was flat out denying it, because they haven’t seen pictures and people have charged iphones, even though several agencies have confirmed famine.

I refuse to believe that every single child we have seen pictures of had an underlying issue. (underlying issues that could have been treated if hospitals weren’t blown to bits)

Maybe if international journalists were allowed to enter Gaza than maybe I or you could be proved right/wrong.

I have seen no evidence of mass starvation in Gaza.

What we are questioning is the issue of mass famine in Gaza. The evidence we see before our eyes seems to suggest otherwise, thankfully.

Some children (who often seem to have underlying conditions) have died of malnutrition related causes, this we know.

Just like you know there are people starving in Gaza.

The lawyer of a high-profile Gazan doctor detained by Israel since last December has spoken of her shock over his condition after being allowed a rare visit to see him in jail.
Ghaid Qassem has told Sky News that Dr Hussam Abu Safiya - the director of the Kamal Adwan hospital in northern Gaza - survives on very little food, including two spoonfuls of rice a day and has lost a third of his body weight. She said he has been subjected to severe beatings.

"As a young woman, seeing an older man - a respected doctor like Hussam Abu Safiya - broken in front of me, degraded, surrounded by prison guards, in the worst possible condition, how am I supposed to feel?" she said.
"The conditions of his detention are extremely harsh, inhumane, with continuous assaults.
"This is the sixth time he has been brutally attacked.

"The most recent incident was on 24 June, which coincided with the end of Israel's war with Iran and the strike on Soroka Hospital in Beersheba [Israel].
"It seems the prison authorities decided to take revenge. They raided Abu Safiya's cell and began assaulting him.
"He was beaten, sustaining bruises on his head, neck, and back. Afterwards, he requested medical treatment because he felt abnormal heartbeats, but his request was denied."

@Twiglets1 Dr Hussam is not a terrorist nor has he been charged with any crime. Despite that he has been held for months and tortured and Israel are still refusing to release him.

He's a hostage starving in a tunnel. He looked well and healthy before he was kidnapped by Hamas. But you know this.

To cheer you up, here are some that Israel have agreed to release:

Iyad Abu al-Rub, an Islamic Jihad commander convicted of orchestrating suicide bombings in Israel from 2003-2005 that killed 13 people.

The oldest and longest imprisoned to be released is 64-year-old Samir Abu Naama, a Fatah member who was arrested from the West Bank in 1986 and convicted on charges of planting explosives.

The youngest is Mohammed Abu Qatish, who was 16 when he was arrested in 2022 and convicted of an attempted stabbing.

Do you understand sarcasm? Of course I know what Hamas did to him, I am horrified like any normal person I was purposefully being an ass in reply to the person I replied to as they are so ignorant to believe no one is starving in Gaza and everyone has a “chronic illness”.

Evyatar David is one of the hostages. Footage was released of him by Hamas, emaciated and forced to dig his own grave. He did not have a chronic illness when he was kidnapped.

I think they should release the prisoners they have been asked to release in exchange for hostages. Isn’t that the whole purpose of the deal? Names, who’s friend they are, what they did 6 generations ago and what football team they support have little relevance this late in the war. They aren’t going to be allowed have anything to do with Gaza going forward anyway.

We would know if he did as the truth tends to come out in the end as it has re widespread famine in Gaza.

Marwan Barghouti was convicted by a military court with a trial that had considerable questions over it. An independent report by the Inter-Parliamentary Union find he had not been given a fair trial. There have been concerns that his conviction (by a court with a 95%+ conviction rate) was politically motivated.

That's because he is seen as a potentially unifying leader. He is widely respected, and on Hamas's release list despite not being Hamas. He's been referred to as the Palestinian Mandela. He is considered by many the best hope of a leader to bring about a peace process. He's a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, from his prison cell.

Back in the 90's, when involved in negotiations, he had bridges the gap enough to be allowed to speak at the Knesset, referring to those present as friends.

He's highly educated, had a Masters in International Relations and a pHd, and has devised education programs for Palestinians prisoners which he teaches in prison.

Whilst he has called for interfada, the call was for demonstrations, strikes etc. He's not extreme Islamist - at least his wife is a lawyer who doesn't wear a headscarf.

He's been beaten, tortured, made to sit on a chair with nails in it for hours at a time. Prolonged periods of solitary confinement.

He's someone who has dedicated his life to mostly peaceful resistance. I mean it's possible that he's guilty of the offences, but given the concerns over the trial, that it's out of character for his life before and during prison and how convenient it is for Israel him being out of the way, I wouldn't bet on it.

Absolutely he should be released. He shouldn't have been convicted in the first place.

They don't want to release Dr Hussam because of his popularity and due to how many people have been campaigning for his release since the IDF kidnapped him. They don't want the world to know how they have been treating him. Sick.

I don't know if they're lying or got it wrong, but in the most filmed and documented conflict on the planet, there have been no images of starving, emaciated people beyond a handful of gravely ill children.

Surely while there is currently a prisoner release program to secure the release of hostages, prisoner names now have far less relevance to Isreal this late in the war. It does not stipulate picking and choosing. It would be a mistake at this stage to give Hamas any excuse to stall. This could play into their hands.
