I think the last time his legal representative saw him was in July and yes he was in very bad shape had lost a third of his weight was being beaten and denied medication.

the most recent report I have seen is below

Israel will not release two detained Palestinian doctors, including paediatrician Dr Hussam Abu Safiya and Dr Marwan Al-Hams, as part of the ceasefire deal, a Hamas official told CNN.
Safiya was beaten and kidnapped by Israeli forces during a raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital in December last year after he refused to abandon patients under siege.
Footage in the aftermath of the attack showed Safiya wearing a white medical overcoat crossing a street strewn with rubble. The Israeli military said Safiya was being held as a "suspect" and being questioned over "potential involvement in terrorist activity". Safiya has been held since then without charge.
In July, lawyer Ghaid Ghanem Qassem revealed that Safiya had lost over a third of his body weight in detention in Israel's notorious Ofer prison, was being brutally beaten and that his repeated requests for medical attention had been refused.
“Dr Hossam Abu Safieh is not okay. My most recent visit to him was just a few days ago, on 9 July 2025. He has lost more than 40 kg - over a third of his weight," Qassem said in a post on Facebook.
“At the time of his arrest, he weighed 100 kilograms. Today, his weight does not exceed 60,” she said, adding that he was “severely beaten on 24 June 2025”.
“His cell in Ofer Prison - Cell 1, Section 24 - was specifically targeted. He was brutally beaten in the chest area.”
Furthermore, she reported that Safiya suffers from "irregular heartbeat, and his eyeglasses, which were recently brought in through his lawyer, were broken".

Don’t Palestinian prisoners and detainees often go on hunger strike in prison so they can blame Israel for starving them?

I’m sure I read that somewhere and it’s quite an
old practice.

It’s really surprising monstrous Israel even allow ‘brutally beaten’ illegally detained ‘disappeared’ Palestinians to been seen by legal reps, let alone multiple visits.

Also surprising the doctor didn’t know his hospital was being used as a Hamas command base.

Seems odd then that such a great peace maker who can easily win an election against Hamas would remain imprisoned?
You’d think he’d be the perfect man for the job.

Are you being sarcastic?

Re: Barghouti, that's been the Israeli government's modus operandi for the last 75+ years. Kill or imprison any potentially successful Palestinian leaders then argue that there is no partner for peace to negotiate with and oops we'll just seize more Palestinian land and build more settlements.....

Barghouti is actually from the Fatah faction, but was/is seen as a threat to the current Fatah leadership. A friend who was in the government told us that Abbas and the people around him move any Palestinian that they see as a threat to roles outside of Palestine e.g. appoint them as diplomats.

Barghouti is hugely popular think Mandela, a unifying, progressive Palestinian leader. He likely would defeat both Hamas and the Fatah establishment in any elections.

Hamas badly want Marwan Barghouti & Ahmad Sadatt

If Marwan Barghouti can be released and unite the Palestinians and work towards peace that would be amazing.

But that's why Israel don't want to release him.

The guy in the video I posted from the UK stated we want to ensure ‘an end to the settler colonial, racist, apartheid regime which is Israel’, so it’s pretty clear what he means.

I think the term ‘Zionism’ is very clearly understood as Jewish nationalism and the support of the establishment of Israel. Israel has already been established anyway (and the term pre-dates it existence) so it’s support of Israel existing as a majority Jewish State in the current time era.

People who confusticate the term do so purely because they don’t want to admit they don’t believe a Jewish State, meaning Israel, should exist

Which is odd to me as no one seems to have a problem with majority Muslim (53), Christian, Catholic (Vatican City), Hindu and Buddhist countries, or the 8 Islamic States, because there is a problem with Jewish people having their own State on their own ancestral land because they are Jews, despite Jewish people being one of the few peoples who have consistently been persecuted for centuries as a diaspora group and having a clear reason for having a majority State.

The conflict being about land is smoke and mirrors. It’s about religion as Muslims regard it all as conquered Muslim land.

Arabs were given 86% of the land (of the entire British Mandate), Jews 14% despite being 30% of the population in 1947, which they were quite happy to and did share with Arabs. Land allocated to the Jews was mostly desert and malaria infested swamp. The Arabs still didn’t want them to have any land as a majority Jewish State even though Jewish people had been present in the region for centuries, and the Arabs were colonisers of the land themselves. The Arabs had also benefitted massively from Jewish migration to the area in terms of jobs, higher wages, medical care, modernised agriculture and better living conditions. That’s why so many moved into the region who now profess to be indigenous…..

The Maldives is the only country in the world where only Muslims can be citizens and non-Muslim visitors such as foreign workers or tourists can only practice their religion in private. They also have the death penalty for apostasy, and no one cares about that but they do care about Jewish people having a majority Jewish State in their indigenous lands despite having a large Muslim population with citizenship, in direct contrast to the Maldives.

The Maldives became an independent State in 1965. I have never heard anyone going on about it being an ‘ethno state’ or saying it shouldn’t exist because it’s a a Muslim State.

Edited

Big day tomorrow for Gaza. Donnie is on the ground in Egypt to see first hand the hostages are released, and the prisoners.
Let’s hope it’s as civil as it can be.

Big day could even be today!

Just read on BBC website that Hamas have offered to release the hostages today instead of tomorrow in exchange for just 2 from their previous list of 7 particularly high value prisoners.

@1dayatatime @TicklishMauveSquid agree with what you say. I would just add that 'zionism' existed before Herzl and the movement that he defined, in that Israel, as the homeland of the Jews, is absolutely central to Judaism in the Bible, prayers, stories etc. Jews were travelling to Israel and were concerned about Israel before Herzl, and independent of Herzl.

The idea that fanatics screaming about zionists on the streets have any clue about these complexities is for the birds.

’Zionism’ is currently being interpreted as meaning different things by different people
so I don’t think those who say Zionism must end are all calling for an end to Israel.

This is someone writing about the question in Haaretz April 2024:
Excerpt from the article
What the hell is a Zionist?

The word is "Zionist," a flexible term that can refer to a wide range of people, behaviors and beliefs. It has been applied to fanatical Jewish supremacists, people who endorse a two-state solution, conscientious objectors to the IDF – who nonetheless condemn Hamas – and a K-pop star who held a Starbucks cup, among others. There are those who declare themselves staunch anti-Zionists because they oppose the policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the carnage in Gaza, but still might meet someone else's definition of Zionism if they don't believe that Israelis should be expelled from the Levant.

To clear up this confusion, I asked people on X to put a moratorium on the word for clarity's sake: When they say Zionist, are they talking about National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and his Kahanist ilk ? Are they talking about anyone who advocates for anything but the dismantling of Israel? Are they talking about Jewish people in general, who they don't like for reasons unrelated to Theodore Herzl?

Well I could interpret the Klu Klux Klan as a self help group teaching people how to put duvets into white duvet covers. But just because it's my interpretation that doesn't make it correct.

So let's stick to the dictionary definition shall we.

According to the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, Zionism is a political movement that was originally founded to establish an independent state for Jewish people in Palestine and now supports the development and protection of the State of Israel.

Basically whilst strong militias exist in Gaza they represent an alternative governing party for Gaza

They may be good for fighting Hamas or subduing them but the main one Sky News wrote about does not sound at all right for governing as they are more like marauding looters and dealers.

Also if they are being given arms by Israel, Hamas will refuse to give up their arms most likely.

Maybe an effective, potentially good governing militia clan will emerge but it is hard to see how it can work out.

Edited

In reality the militias are a mix of various strong family groups that see an opportunity to take advantage of the decline of Hamas.

As for the weapons - Gaza is awash with weapons and with around 30k dead Hamas fighters it's not difficult to take one of their weapons. That said picking one of is extremely hazardous and marks you out as an immediate target.

1dayatatime · 11/10/2025 23:31

ScrollingLeaves · 11/10/2025 23:06

Well the "Zionism must end" is a call for the end of the State of Israel
I disagree, as I think it is generally meant as a call for the end of extremist attitudes.

The conversation has been on this board before, though some time ago now, that a lot of people have an idea of Zionism that it refers to extremist settlers such as some of those settlers in the West Bank and the government encouraging them, or Daniela Weiss, who say God promised the land to the Jews and Palestinians should leave, or extremists like Ben Givr Smotrich and Netanyahu. That is rather than Zionism referring to Israelis’ idea of a homeland ( especially after pogroms and the holocaust) but alongside the Palestinians as their neighbours.

The Likud party backing Netanyahu sees from the river to the sea as Jewish.

Clearly people can claim to define any word in whichever way they want but it doesn't make it correct.

Basically whilst strong militias exist in Gaza they represent an alternative governing party for Gaza.

This is a threat to the continued rule of Hamas (probably under a new brand name). That's why Hamas wants to eliminate them.

Of course this will result in many more innocent Gazan civilians deaths, but Hamas never cared about this anyway and for the Pro Palestinian lobby, so long as it's not Jews causing Gazan civilian casualties then that's perfectly fine.

@1dayatatime I no longer respond to attempts by people to emotionally manipulate me to condemn someone/something like the LBC presenter Tom Swarbrick clearly attempted to do by equating what the student said about Israel to Jewish people in the UK (which we've all been quite clearly told is anti-Semitic).

The student is quite uninformed as a lot of young people with limited life experience are. However these kids have been watching blown up babies for 2 years, what do you expect roses? Of course they're angry, there's only so much death a normal person can witness before it affecting them. They're also responding to all the dehumanisation they've seen from the other side.

Leaving Israeli politicians out of it, here is journalist Melanie Phillips (who I believe lives in the UK) saying about Palestinians in Gaza:

Breaking a non-existent siege of a non-existent people in a non-existent state.

There are many many more who privately share the same views but know that they currently can't express those views publicly.

Oh believe me they're expressing it openly and very vocally all over social media (hence Netanyahu's 8th front) just look at Fuentes and his Groypers. It's actually disconcerting how some people are taking it to the extreme. In that sense Mumsnet due to it's strict moderation is not representative.

Of course calling for the end of Zionism is calling for the end of Israel.
