Footage shows public executions in Gaza City street

BBC Verify: Footage has emerged showing the public executions of three men accused of being Israeli collaborators in Gaza City.

BBC Verify has verified that the location of the executions was a street outside Shifa hospital in the centre of the city, which is the focus of a major Israeli ground offensive.

Videos circulating on Sunday evening showed at least five armed and masked men, three blindfolded Palestinian men kneeling on the ground and a large crowd.

One of the armed men is heard saying: "The death sentence has been decided for all collaborators".

There are cheers before the three men are pushed to the ground and shot several times in the back of the head. The crowd then praises Hamas's armed wing, the Qassam Brigades.

A Palestinian security official from the Hamas-run Gaza government told Reuters that the executions were carried out by the "Joint Operations Room of the Palestinian resistance".

This is a rare instance in which a public execution in Gaza has been captured on video. There have been previous reports of Hamas using violence on those who dissent. In May, Hamas-led groups reportedly executed four Palestinians for looting aid trucks.

Ah yeah, how silly of me. Obviously someone who is collaborating with Israel is on the side of Palestinians Confused

This thread is like the twighlight zone. People who have been cheering on and excusing extreme violence without a shred of evidence except 'Israel said so' , excusing the holding and torture of people who haven't even been charged with a crime in Israeli prisons, suddenly wanting fair trials for alleged crimes. One rule for thee another for me. Again.

You can blow up a whole apartment block full of families if you think there may be a terrorist inside, you can shoot random people in the street if you think they may be a terrorist because remember terrorists don't wear uniforms so they could be anyone, if you think some one is working with your enemy though you must absolutely find them a lawyer and give them a fair trial(unless your enemy is Hamas of course then screw evidence and trials blow that fucker and everybody within a 100metre radius up). It makes complete sense if you have a basic understanding of the pro Israel mindset.

Arguing with you is like the twilight zone too - reminder to self not to bother.

I just have a basic understanding that in war the enemy is the other side.

If my kid was killed by the murdering scum in the IDF and then people who collaborated with these murdering scum, including the head of a gang who shot Palestinians and stole from them, was paraded out and executed I would likely cheer and I am anti the death penalty.

When you have had everything taken from you, house blown up, family murdered, driven from place to place with no food, medicine or shelter - PTSD from the bombs and then suddenly there is someone who has worked with the people who did this to you and you expect these people to behave dignified and say “well I think they deserve a fair trial”. It is easy to judge from your comfy armchair in Israel, the US or the UK but imagine how you would feel if lost everything and everyone, if each night you hear bombs and do not know if you will wake in the morning. Ask yourself, would you cheer.

No I wouldn’t cheer and chant because it would be horrible to see someone executed in the street for an alleged crime that I wouldn’t even know if they were guilty of or not. It’s not like they had received a fair trial is it? Just Hamas deciding they were guilty of something and murdering them.

Weird as always how people rush to defend Hamas & their supporters.

They’ll be war criminals soon enough. Technically if they go to Spain they already are. So that’s your beautiful IDF.

The whole IDF can’t be war criminals, in Spain or anywhere else.

Individual members of the IDF can be war criminals if they are found to have committed war crimes but it’s not a war crime just to be in an army fighting a war.

Like I said you have a weird hierarchy of death. Executing people who you think are your enemy( so long as they hold a different citizenship) with the killing and maiming of innocent people - mumsnet pro Israeli folk give a big thumbs up.

Execute people who you think are your enemy but share the same citizenship(well they aren't allowed citizenship but you know what I mean), don't kill innocent people - booo!

It might make sense to you but it sure as heck doesn't to me.

My SIL lives in Israel and has been out protesting against Netanyahu and posting about this on SM. She is free to do so without fear to her own personal wellbeing. Unlike those who speak out against Hamas.

I am not defending Hamas in any way shape or form. This person is purposely highlighting that civilians were demonstrating hate. I believe that it is an attempt to justify their suffering. I am simply pointing out the other side of the coin.

It is of course preferable to live in Isreal even under the current administration than it is to live in Gaza where you are at risk from Israel and Hamas. But I struggle to understand why some murders are applauded by Israeli supporters and some are demonised. They are all awful.

Listen to yourself justifying summary executions of citizens of Gaza in the street.

Or is it okay because they might have been collaborators?

I mean Hamas said so, it’s probably true, right?

I thought you cared about the suffering of people in Gaza? But now suddenly it’s totally understandable for citizens to be shot in the head in public, to titillate/pour encourager les autres?

I’m saying that people in Gaza are living in extreme circumstances and we shouldn’t judge them to same standards as those living in safe environments.

Amazing, how you care so much about these characters executed but all the children shot by snipers were actually Hamas operatives rather than just children.

Dude if you can't see that people who collaborate with the state that have slaughtered over 60000 people and have the ultimate goal of ethnically cleansing them from their homeland would count as 'the enemy' to those who have been targeted I don't know what to say to you.

Both were executions of an 'enemy' in public without trial to the cheers of various people.

Let's not forget, these collaborators were the 'right kind' of terrorist. Yes he headed up an armed militia, but because he's funded by Israel its totally fine...

It's so grimy and hypocritical.

Don't assassinate people should be a principle you hold the IDF to as well as Hamas.

Oh the pagers that targeted Hezbollah officials & militants and killed a lot of them?

Yes it was a shame that some of their family members got killed, they were clearly not the target and didn’t deserve it. It was a military success but an operation rather than a public execution. Very, very clever in that civilian deaths were minimised and not a disproportionate response to the threat that Hezbollah poses to Israel.

Why are you comparing the IDF targeting their enemy ( Hezbollah) who would gladly kill IDF soldiers if they got the chance with Hamas killing their own Palestinian people because they are doing something they don’t like?

I just don't understand the pro Israel posters hierarchy of murder that they have going on. How many times have we heard that Israeli children were murdered far more brutally than Palestinian children so that makes the deaths of 37 children worse than the 20000 that have been starved, sniped, blown to pieces etc. I know that you have seen that. We all have.

What was the point?
This is who was at the opening of the Palestinian embassy yesterday. Do your MPs drive and abassadors around in bangers then? Who did people think were there? Hamas? Just Arabs because no one else could possibly care? Imagine driving past any other large gathering of diplomats and politicians and people thinking it's noteworthy that they aren't all driving 2004 Nissan micras.

There were MPs by the dozen, about 60 ambassadors, and a smattering of moderately famous faces. Wes Streeting, the health secretary, and John Swinney, the first minister of Scotland, were among those present.

"Less emphasis on human rights than we'd like" oh come now.

Even Amnesty International condemned their routine use of torture and murder against political rivals Fatah during the 2014 conflict: "As well as carrying out unlawful killings, others abducted by Hamas were subjected to torture, including severe beatings with truncheons, gun butts, hoses and wire or held in stress positions. Some were interrogated and tortured or otherwise ill-treated in a disused outpatient’s clinic within the grounds of Gaza City’s main al-Shifa hospital. At least three people arrested during the conflict accused of “collaboration” died in custody."

And whilst the throwing gay people off buildings was Iraq, not Hamas, there is vast amounts of evidence showing how Hamas treat LGBT people - not least UN Watch in 2022: "The Palestinian Authority and Hamas routinely torture human rights activists, women, LGBT persons, political opponents, so-called “collaborators,” and Palestinians who sell land to Jews, the non-governmental group UN Watch charged Thursday. ... Hamas in Gaza also routinely employs torture. Gaza peace activist Rami Aman, who was held by Hamas for more than six months in 2020, <a class="break-all" href="https://rejouer.perma.cc/replay-web-page/w/id-335779ddb582/mp_/www.voanews.com/a/middle-east_gaza-activist-after-lengthy-torture-hamas-forced-me-divorce/6204063.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">spoke publicly about being tortured by Hamas.
In March 2019, Hamas security forces severely beat protesters with batons and clubs and arrested more than 1,000, including journalists and human rights defenders. Many were subjected to torture.
Palestinians accused of “collaborating” with Israel are routinely tortured by both the PA and Hamas.
Torture included beatings, putting out cigarettes on their bodies, pulling out teeth, forcing them into painful positions and abusing their genitals."

That's not a little bit of excusable harassment. That's an intolerant hellhole.

Yes, it's the sort of human rights abuses that are sadly too common in various countries in the Middle East (and elsewhere).

I think we should stick to facts though. Hence why I corrected the notion (that seems accepted fact by many) that gay people were thrown off buildings, and that human rights were on a par with the Taliban.

Let's stick to what that actually do that's awful - we don't need to be making stuff up at well, that's counterproductive as well as being misleading.

Okay, so I've had time to look into the criminal justice system 7/10 free a bit, and it's quite interesting.

So homosexuality is dealt with by criminal courts, not Sharia law. It's punishable by up to 10 years prison, under law that we created in the 1930's (go us...). That's not to say things so miserable and dangerous for gay people in Gaza, there were certainly harassment, and increase the risk of honour killings. But it wasn't capital offence, and as I've said before, videos purporting to be Gaza to show Isis in Iraq instead.

There was a functioning criminal justice system, I'll be not as independent as it should have been, and with less emphasis on rights of appeal and human rights than we would like. Shari's law was a personal disputes and family dispute not the criminal law.

They did have the death penalty, Which was mostly used for either murder or collaboration with Israel (often where that resulted in airstrikes killing people). Occasionally for drug trafficking. The rate at which they executed people was higher than the USA, but lower than places like Saudi and Iran. It was considered mid-tier. There was a full judicial process and there were prisons etc. The appeals process was considered politically motivated and lacking independence however. So whilst collaborators previously probably would have been executed, it would have been after a judicial process, albeit not one that would pass our tests for fairness.

For women's rights, again, it wasn't amazing, but it's not Saudi or the Taliban! Pressure to wear hijab comes from families, not law though same government offices mandated it.

Religious freedom was poor but as long as they kept a low profile Christians were tolerated. They were not expected to wear hijab, even in government offices that mandated it.

Of course what goes on officially and what goes under the radar can be different things. Informal/family pressure and abuse can often be far more a problem.

It clearly wasn't an oasis of enlightenment, but it wasn't the intolerant hellhole comparable to the Taliban that some people make out.

The consensus seems to be that Hamas may have preferred to be more conservative, but in doing so would have risked alienating more liberal elements of society, so took a pragmatic decision to not be too extreme, to keep a better hold on power.

Anyway, I thought it was interesting. I wouldn't have been rushing to live there, but it wasn't quite as hard long as I thought.

"Less emphasis on human rights than we'd like" oh come now.

I'm not surprised that:

Crowds cheered when the broken, dead body of Shani Louk was paraded through the streets.

Crowds cheered when Hamas paraded the dead bodies of the Bibas family.

Crowds cheered after 9/11.

Crowds cheered when they executed men they said were collaborators.

People on MN make up excuses for anything Hamas do. (Eg, 'its not their fault is it', 'what do you expect' etc).

People in the Western nations sing 'from the river to the sea' and 'Houthis, do me proud, turn another ship around'.

People tear down pictures of hostages taken from a festival or a Kibbutz.
