Ireland is fast becoming the European pariah.

I do wonder about the psychology behind Irish antisemitism. The usual analysis is that Ireland was subjected and harmed by a bigger power, and that that accounts for Irish support for Palestinians.

But anyone with even the slightest awareness of history would see that a people brutally treated and who campaigned and killed for a homeland free of external intervention…would sympathise with Jews and Israel.

So I suppose the Irish impulse is just ‘good’ old antisemitism.

The Netherlands are to ban the import of goods from illegal Israeli settlements, they will also back plans to suspend trade-related measures in a European Union agreement with Israel.

I intermittently check what EU doing about their association with Israel, as Israel does care what it’s closest allies think. They appeared to have increased aid transfer into Gaza at behest of US and EU.

von der Leyen appears to have given a good speech from that article. It’s great to see leaders standing up for basic principles.

I am not hopeful that there will be majority support for the association with Israel to be even partially revoked though. Germany and Italy didn’t want to stop Israel being involved in the Horizon programme previously. Maybe this will change now?

What benefits have the Israelis had from ‘their governments and citizens illegal activities’?

Are you serious? The 700000 Israelis living in occupied territory? Israel’s confiscation of land, water, and other natural resources for the benefit of settlements and residents of Israel(a violation of the Hague convention). Israelis sit and watch this happen, year in year out, a lot say that they disagree with it but do absolutely nothing to rectify the situation. They hold neither the settlers themselves or the Israeli government accountable.

Israels illegal occupation in the West Bank alone has cost the Palestinian economy over $60billion since 2000. Israelis have no problem 'sanctioning' Palestinians.

If Israelis are all looking peace like we are told then I am sure they would be greatful for the international community putting pressure on their government to stop slaughtering people and stop stealing land(after all they are all supposedly against that). Weirdly enough though mention banning trade with illegal settlements and suddenly all the people who are soooo against them in the first place get all red faced and shouty almost like they aren't actually against them all.
