Israel committing genocide in Gaza, world’s top scholars on the crime say

Everexpanding · 01/09/2025 17:15

An overwhelming majority of members of the world’s leading genocide scholars’ association have backed a resolution stating that Israel’s actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of the crime.
Eighty-six per cent of those who voted in the 500-member International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) supported the motion. The resolution states that “Israel’s policies and actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide in article II of the United Nations convention for the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide (1948).”

Why do terrorists have to be killed, rather than captured and brought to trial?
Where is the evidence that there are terrorists there at all?
What is the the definition of a terrorist?

What did I just read????????

Yes, let them eat cake.

Oh, no evidence at all.

I'm guessing one of your slogans is "but Israel are the real terrorists"?

This utter gaslighting of the Jewish people following the most genocidal massacre since the Holocaust is absolutely repugnant.

It deserves to be reported, but it also deserves to stay visible as a prime example of the noxious infuence of Hamas propaganda on (young?? are you young|???) hearts and minds.

SharonEllis · 06/09/2025 06:27

@Everexpanding questioning whether there are terrorists in Gaza is denying that Hamas is a terrorist organisation and suggesting they are legitimate. That is support.

Hamas is a proscribed terrorist organisation. Its members are terrorists.

Hamas's attack on Israel was a declaration of war. The legitimate, legal response was a military one.

The suggestion that Israeli authorities should go into Gaza and arrest Terrorists is a nonsense legally and practically and shows no understanding of the politics of the region. Israelis would just be killed.

If they weren't killed they would be storing up thousands of people in jail just to be exchanged in the next peace deal. When Israel would yet again be having to give up cold blooded terrorists, releasing them to come back and murder more Israelis.

So, come on all of you who claim to condemn Hamas. Lets see some condemnation.

Open support for a proscribed terrotist organisation, which is what this post is, is illegal in this country. I trust everyone who swears they are anti Hamas will condemn this post.

7 October was a declaration of war. An invasion. That is why Israeli retaliation was justfied and legal under international war. Whether you believe the war has been justified as it has gone in is something people disagree about. That is not the point in this instance

I don’t think @hkathy is showing support for a terrorist organisation she is raising a valid point about how the rule of law is being thrown out the window as soon as someone is labelled a terrorist, and just who controls who is designated a terrorist. With the rise in the use of drones for extrajudicial killings and also the use of AI as in Gaza these are pertinent points. We are becoming used to the rule of law being disregarded, Guantanamo Bay breached human rights law. Obama’s use of drones for extrajudicial assassinations breached human rights law. We are being conditioned to accept these things. I am no fan of fundamentalists of any persuasion but I cannot just go out and kill them but governments are doing this

Interesting leaked documents of Israeli minstry of foreign affairs polling and focus groups show most of the rest of the world consider Israel to be genocidal and killing mainly civilians and they conclude that nest way to improve Israel's reputation is to focus narrative on Radical Islam'

'Israel’s best tactic to combat this, according to the study, is to foment fear of “Radical Islam” and “Jihadism,” which remain high, the research finds. By highlighting Israeli support for women’s rights and gay rights while elevating concerns that Hamas wants to “destroy all Jews and spread Jihadism,” Israeli support rebounded by an average of over 20 points in each country. “Especially once the situation in Gaza is resolved, the room for growth in all countries is very significant,” the report concludes.

I think we just have to agree to disagree 🤷🏻‍♀️

You call it collective punishment, war crimes, and genocide.

I call it war against terrorists. I wish there was a magic sieve we could use to ensure that no one innocent is harmed. (Despite Hamas and the Gazan civilian mobs having taken exactly the opposite approach.)

Now had the chance to read this critique of Owen Jones and don't find it at all credible.

Second paragraph refers to images of dead babies still in their cribs - 2 babies were killed on Oct 7 - one shot through a safe room door and one died in utero. Were there any images of dead babies in their cribs even though they didnt die there? Oct 7 was horrendous enough without having to refer to things that aren't true - perhaps they mean young children but this critique which is so called honest reporting had falsehoods in its opening paragraphs.

They then refer to 1 thing Owen Jones got wrong about Netanyahu laying a stone on Gaza for which Owens has admitted the error.

Other criticism of him is for saying Israel want to ethnically cleanse the Gaza Strip- umm surely we can all acknowledge that that is obviously what they want?

And for challenging the evidence of Al-Ahli as a Hamas Command and Control center - which many including Amnesty International, NYTimes, Guardian have questioned the lack of evidence provided to substantiate the claims.

I think Owen Jones has done an amazing job of keeping focus on the atrocities perpetrated in Gaza and he speaks for a vast many people who have been frustrated by the lack of coverage of mainstream media.

What I did say was that Oct 7th does not justify Israel collectively punishing Palestinians, killing women, children, aid workers and journalists at scale. Starving a civilian population and carrying out multiple and repeated war crimes. Genocide is never justified

Are you suggesting they deserved what happened?

I think it's fair to say neither side behaved kindly to the other before 7 Oct, although I do understand the blockades better now.

I thought we were discussing the conduct of this war.

No I at no point said October 7th was justified

No I don’t agree and Israel could never be considered to have ever played by Marquess of Queensberry Rules. Israel broke international law repeatedly prior to October 7th what was the excuse then?

Completely outrageous thing to say.

You fail to understand none of these things horrifying as they may be justify the slaughter of upwards of 60,000 people, nothing justifies the starvation of a civilian population, nothing justifies collective punishment and war crimes. International Law is in place for a reason and Israel is not above it

International law is about wars fought by armies wearing uniforms. This is a conflict started by Hamas, who do not wear uniforms, blend seamlessly into the civilian population, and maximise their own civilian deaths in order to saturate the media with propaganda because it's their only chance of gaining an advantage. Gazan civilian mobs also carried out the attacks on 7 Oct, with great enthusiasm, and it was all met with jubilation in the streets.

Banging on about international law in this particular scenario is like insisting that one wrestler follow the Marquess of Queensberry rules when fighting an opponent armed with a flick knife and a machete.

You want to deal in misery porn? OK.

I share this with regret, as it's a gross violation of privacy, and many of us here do not need to see this sort of thing to understand what's happening. But maybe you do.

Yes, I would, if my countrymen had behaved as Hamas and the civilian Gazan mobs did. I'd accept it as the obvious consequences. Especially if they made no secret of their agenda to continue until the other country was obliterated.

War is Hell.

So you’d “accept” your own children being bombed and starved? That’s not strength, it’s dehumanisation. No parent anywhere sees their child’s death as an “obvious consequence.” Civilians are not extensions of Hamas, and international law exists precisely because “war is hell” isn’t an excuse for mass killing.

What do you call Hamas? Religious governance, opposition to LGBTQ+ rights, restrictions on women's roles, censorship and limits on free speech, anti-socialist economic stance, authoritarian control ... oh, and the most obscenely violent antisemitism in living memory, shrugged off here.

You think Israel’s response is proportionate and justified. You think the murder of 20,000 children is justified. I wonder if you’d say the same thing if it was your children and relatives?
