Conflict in the Middle East

@Corinthiana That's part of the horror really. Geopolitical alliances flex and some of our allies are countries in which we would not (particularly as women) wish to live ourselves. Sometimes I imagine a kind of underground railway for women who want to escape such places, but it is their home and their culture and where would they go?

But back to the thread (apologies) all sexes in minority groups in the middle east are in great danger of genocide from the expansion of militant islamism.

I'd love that - an underground railroad to help women and girls escape Islamism.

I think in this specific case though it’s anyone who is not a sunni muslim who is in danger of eradication. They are asking if people are Druze or Muslim. They aren’t fussing about anything else.

Until you disagree with them. I know what you mean, but it never stops there.
They killed any and all Sunni Muslims who disagreed with something, tried to stand up for others, were not devout enough etc etc.
They just need one excuse.

I agree. And it's especially sad considering that these communities have lived there for thousands of years and are part of the country's identify. Moderate Muslims are also in danger, ISIS killed them too.

I remember Isis crucified a teenager for eating during Ramdan fasting hours.

There is no such entity as "The West". Groups form, have religious and political beliefs and act those out.
Their responsibility entirely. The Taliban's treatment of women isn't about "The West" making them do it.

You're right, but arming and funding these groups helps them to develop. That is what has happened.

You might say that, I couldn't possibly comment.

YourOnMute · 22/07/2025 11:39

Yes, must be one of those self flagellation lunatics because I think the West should be aware of its contribution to this and the effect of its actions. It has some responsibility here. And it continues today.

quantumbutterfly · 22/07/2025 11:28

There are a few ideologies competing for dominance and influence in the world at the moment and the influence of this one is a massive problem in the middle east and Africa.
It seems like Hobson's choice of which authoritarian brutality you get.

'The West' is damned if they get involved or if they don't, especially by the self flagellating lunatics who live there.

Oh god no, I know plenty of muslims who would think WTAF if some prick started talking about enslaving women for sex. I would never endorse those view and no-one I know would be ok with it either.

Think we can agree there are some pretty awful people in the world.

Absolutely. It is the actions of Islamists, rather than Muslims. It happens where they have power, whatever group name they call themselves.

Islamist terrorism is a scourge of the middle East and we can't be blinkered to this. It's easy for us in the West to not comprehend the death cult mentality of such group as it undermines our belief in humanity but it exists and the consequences are all too real.

I agree.
However I think we need to look at how all this started and who supported it.
Who got Isis off the ground? The US. Supporting them through many many years from Afghanistan on.
Who was then in a prime position to take advantage of the chaos created through the WMD war.
Who funded Hamas as a foil to the PLO? Netanyahu.
Who's now funding an ISIS type group in Gaza as a foil to Hamas? Netanyahu.
Who's supporting the current exISIS leader in Syria? The US.
Sp yes, it's easy for us in the West not to realise etc but we should be aware of how the West and their allies have supported these groups in the past.

Corinthiana · 22/07/2025 11:17

Thank you for highlighting this, OP, I've been watching and reading about it with increasing horror. At least the BBC are reporting it.
Alas, I doubt that there will be marches, events and flag waving to support the victims of these atrocities.

Twiglets1 · 20/07/2025 08:52

Ugh ...that is abhorrent.

Oh my god. Like the Yazidi women.
I've heard some harrowing stories from those survivors, brave women who have spoken out

User37482 · 22/07/2025 11:10

There are so many videos of men being asked if they are Druze and then just shot. It’s foul. Heartbreaking.

User37482 · 22/07/2025 09:15

Seen some pretty awful things recently, an old man was burned to death in his wheel chair and a video of a woman a granny and two children who had been shit in a taxi fleeing suwaida, the grandmother had her throat slit. I’m quite despairing of the fact this is barely getting any attention. This is a tiny minority group and people are genuinely trying to ethnically cleanse them. These aresholes are videoing themselves murdering people in the most grotesque ways. It is very much like Hamas.

I really do think the west has to pivot towards federalism for the safety of minority groups in Syria. There are at least 80 women missing, presumed kidnapped and 1000 dead within a few days.

We can

Unfortunately when your username is "user" followed by a number it is easy to mix you up with different posters, I mistook you for a different poster who has posted some questionable views so assumed it was more of that

This remind me of when the centre for media monitoring claimed it was islamaphobic to report that a terrorist had said “allahu akhbar”. Even though he had actually said that and it was factual reporting.

They felt it connected islam with terrorism, which it didn’t. The terrorist connected his terrorist action with Islam. his actions may not have reflected the views of a majority of muslims but he was very clear about why he was doing what he was doing.

Me repeating someones own words claiming their faith allows them to do something is not islamaphobia. It’s a nonsense argument used to prevent people discussing crimes with full information.

Yes I've apologised I read your post quickly and misread who the quote came from.

Apologies I misread your post and thought you were in agreement with the quote.

Anyone from any faith that takes the scriptures literally will perpetuate extremist views. These extremists exists in all faiths they are not representative of the faith or the vast majority of its followers. This distinction needs to be made.

Unfortunately taking women as sex slaves is not confined to one region or one faith. It is the result of patriarch misogynistic cultures.

I didn’t say that! Go fight with Jolanis cousin, he thinks its fine to say that! i’m not the one claiming to think it’s permissible, he is!

Edited

We cross posted I apologised for misinterpreting what you posted

ComeAsYouAreAsAFriend · 20/07/2025 13:51

User37482 · 20/07/2025 13:43

I repeated what Jolani’s cousin has said. I never said it was fine, nor did I say it was what billions of muslims believe. If a muslim himself declares his belief in the practice that is not on me thats on him.

Lets be honest though Isis did it because they believed it was permissible according to whatever grotesque beliefs they have. A Yazidi woman was found in Gaza precisely because some people actually believe it. Hamas talked about it in their videos because some of them believe it is permissible.

I’m not muslim, I have no idea if that whole “what your right hand possess” thing is true or not or misquoted or misinterpreted. But enough people believe it in the middle east that thousands of women have been taken into sexual slavery. Thats not a me problem, it’s a them problem.

Apologies I misread your post and thought you were in agreement with the quote.

We mustn't bury these details, awful as they are.

I'm not trying to bury details. Language matters and the claim that
it’s permissible in Islam to take Druze women as sex slaves.
Is not true, inflammatory and anti Muslim. It needs to be clarified that it is extremists perpetuating this and not a belief of your average Muslim.

I agree that, this is the type of behaviour perpetrated by radicals, which is very different to the claim that it is permissible in Islam.

I didn’t say that! Go fight with Jolanis cousin, he thinks its fine to say that! i’m not the one claiming to think it’s permissible, he is!

User37482 · 20/07/2025 13:45

ComeAsYouAreAsAFriend · 20/07/2025 09:39

Just saw Jolanis cousin helpfully reminding everyone that it’s permissible in Islam to take Druze women as sex slaves

No it is not! This kind of rhetoric is not helpful and inciteful. He is likely referring to Islamist extremists so needs to clarify that and not taint the billions of Muslims around the world

Also I’d be more worried about people thinking its ok to take sex slaves vs people pointing at the people who want to take sex slaves and going “eurgh, thats fucking appalling”.
