Conflict in the Middle East

How long until the Iranian regime collapses?

I think days......

The dismantling of its defence systems, the panic in Terhan coupled with decapitation of the senior ministry leadership alongside important government institutions makes control increasingly hard for the regime.

I think the lack of good options for Iran has made them separately wave a white flag attempting to get back to the negotiating material but maybe it's just too late?

Do you mean they are about to turn Tehran into Gaza?

No or at least not yet. The goal appears to be the elimination of every identifiable expression of regime power: every military target they can find, combined with a psychological operation designed to incite panic and convince the population the regime is collapsing. On the surface, they claim to care about Iranian civilians. Trump will have been persuaded this is a 'one-and-done' operation something that doesn’t cross his personal threshold for starting another Middle East war. The fact is they can't all evacuate it's impossible the roads are gridlocked as they are and fuel is running out.

I suspect that, alongside the U.S., they’re preparing for a shock-and-awe bombing campaign targeting every military installation they can identify in Tehran. Every barracks, every ammunition depot, every hardened bunker the whole damn lot. The objective? To eliminate Khamenei, the top command, and as much of the IRGC leadership as possible and use bunker busters on the hardened nuclear site in the mountains which only the US can do.

Workers in banks, hospitals, and police and military stations have been directly ordered to stay in the city.
“We’re stuck here,” said Farhad, a taxi driver whose wife, a bank employee, was told to stay around on high alert for potential cyber attacks.
Food shelves are well stocked, but petrol and diesel shortages are a major concern. Authorities are restricting vehicles to a maximum of 30 litres of fuel. Officials say supply has not been cut and insist it will not be in the future.
Several of the city’s neighbourhoods lost water supply on Sunday after an Israeli strike hit a major water pipeline, flooding a key thoroughfare and killing two civilians.

Spot on @sualipa

And one further point: I wonder how many of those who have convinced themselves that immigration is the root of all our problems, and lie awake at night in righteous outrage about the Small Boats, are able to connect the dots with what effect another failed state in the middle east is likely to have on migration patterns.

You don’t think Iranians fleeing the current regime make up a chunk of the existing small boats people?

sualipa · 17/06/2025 06:45

They’re also deeply concerned that the Strait of Hormuz could erupt into chaos, so they're trying to preempt the regime's ability to trigger that scenario. If, on the way out, Iran begins torching oil and gas infrastructure or sabotaging export routes, the economic fallout would be enormous.

Evacuate all of Tehran?
Ten million people where will they go?
What happens to the elderly, the mentally ill, the newborns in incubators?
To the prisoner rapists, murderers, innocents, the forgotten?
To those in ICU beds, clinging to life by machines?

The fuel runs dry.The roads clog with desperation.
No food. No power. No water.Chaos like you've never seen before.

And then what?

The world is a brutal, unforgiving place.
Here in the UK, at peace, we barely understand how lucky we are.
Much of humanity lives like animals waking each day in fear, searching for food,
hunted by war, poverty, and predators in human form.Paranoia isn’t madness. It’s survival.

Trump’s decided he’ll take a piece of whatever Netanyahu is selling now peace, war, chaos, doesn’t matter. The worst US leader at the worse time.

How long until the Iranian regime collapses?

They've got too much heavyweight protection and funding from Saudis. Another coup d'etat would be very difficult.

My impression was that the Saudis oppose Iran. Iran has been bankrolling destabilisation in the region at a point when the Saudis and Israel were actually making progress.

A distraction tactic? It’s almost as if tiny Israel has nothing better to do than wage war with a country 75 times bigger than itself with a much bigger army when it’s already been fighting and still is on 6 other fronts for almost two years.

The refusal to confront reality in that beliefs about Israel, which logically can only be born out of hatred for the only Jewish state with Netanyahu demonised as the leader, as the propaganda against it can easily be picked apart with research and the help of an average intellect, disgusts me quite frankly.

The descriptor language used, which I’ve never seen applied to Hamas, Hezbollah, the Iranian regime or even Putin, on these boards is a dead giveaway I have to say.

Netanyahu has not been found guilty of war crimes or any other crimes and the Israeli government is not a ‘regime’ btw unless you class any other democratically elected government defending its citizens in a war as the same?

And they are most definitely a rogue regime because I refuse to consider that Israeli people have willingly elected a war criminal doing ethic cleansing? They must be stopped.

Absolutely a distraction tactic and a unilateral war. But that is what you would expect after what they have done in front of our eyes in Gaza and elsewhere. Of course you will wage a war with any one so long as you have hidden nukes and being sent gifts upon gifts of missiles and what not from Trump and his cronies.

Tell me why have ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netenyahu? And why was the British cabinet proposing a ban on Israeli ministers just a few days ago?

Distraction tactic it is. To ensure their land grab and ethnic cleansing can keep going at its pace. Just a few hours ago, UN officials have warned against of the unprecedented suffering in Gaza.

Please don’t pretend and wrap this war as a happy gift to Irani people. The current regime is a result of USA and U.K. staging a coup to remove an elected prime minister.
Anything initiated by the war criminal Netanyahu and his blood thirsty regime is of course never going to end in goodness and rainbows. It is just a distraction tactic on behalf of the Israeli regime.

Of course there’s been no strong alternative power. They’d all have been killed! It’s not like there are free and fair elections in Iran. Any candidate not loyal to the regime is ‘disqualified’.

I doubt ordinary Iranians would have voted for execution by crane and the rape of girls and women before execution as Islam forbids the execution of virgins.

Let us hope the people of Iran take this opportunity to be free of this evil regime.

He is just totally unhinged. So long as something makes him money, it is ok. Whether it is Putin or this war unilaterally started by Israeli regime with his backing and weapons.

He's a piece of absolute shit, drunk tweeting truthing. He has deleted the threatening "Truth".

Props to Americans who cussed him out for 30 minutes.

He can plan all he wants but doesn't mean it would become a reality. There is no strong alternative power in Iran that people would clearly back.

I mean the current lot was presumably brought in as a temporary measure in the bid to get rid of the Shah but they managed to stick around like shit on a shoe

My view is he's just going down the path that he sees as inevitable but it's not a path he necessarily wanted to take. From everything I've read I didn't get a sense he wanted a war against Iran, but has essentially been forced into confronting that reality after Israel decided to attack.

Trump is a king of saying everything and nothing, that tweet can be read in multiple different ways and my interpretation is "things would've been fine if everyone did what I told them to, but they haven't so now civilians should flee if they don't want to he collateral damage" not "I gave them a chance and now I'm deciding to go down the war route cos they said no"

He's just told everyone to evacuate Tehran. There has also been a large movement of American military assets to the region.

Sounds like a threat, I think he is stupid enough to actually use a Nuclear weapon to stop Iran getting nukes and America is the only country to ever use nukes.

If it's boots on the ground then like Tucker Carlson said earlier today he's just ended the American Empire.

Look at the glee on this Republican congress member. Fools all of them.

I have to say I'm not convinced Trump wanted this at all. It seems he campaigned to keep Khamenei alive and was at least somewhat resistant to the attack going ahead at all. He is many things but I don't think warmonger is one of them - in his first term he came across as somewhat war averse, probably since it's bad for business! But now that things have escalated I can imagine how he is now seeing the silver linings of the situation

I have to say I’m finding it quite laughable that posters on here think Netanyahu would have taken out most of the Iranian regime without thinking about what will be in place afterwards. He’s not dumb. Iran will still be a risk if another extremist regime like the current one takes it’s place.

He’s been saying to the Iranian people for months that he’s giving them a chance to be free of the current regime. Mossad had been infiltrating Iran for decades as shown by the drone base etc.

The Iranian operation is called ‘Rising Lion’ which refers to the old Iranian flag before 1980. If you look into the history of Cyrus the Great and the Jews, the 50 years exile is quite symbolic 2500 years later. Actually gave me chills.

AgingLikeGazpacho · 17/06/2025 00:03

I don't have a high view of Trump, but I've seen several different articles along different political lines that align to what this one is saying.

You are correct that the usa was partly responsible for the original 1979 revolution due its participation in the coup d'etat against Mossadegh back in 1953. Missiling scientists in their homes and killing innocent bystanders is not really the USA's go to though, they prefer the sneaky politics instead

How Trump went from opposing Israel's strikes on Iran to reluctant support

The president had opposed Israeli action against Iran but came to believe that Israel had reason to act and that the U.S. would have to lend some support.

You seem to have a high and highly unsubstantiated opinion of Trump. There is no silver lining in this situation. It is a war bilaterally started by a war criminal who is backed by the US and emboldened by the silence and complicity of the West.
the current regime of Iran came to be when USA and U.K. overthrew an elected PM in Iran.

Shudder to think what will come about if Netenyahu has a hand in it.

Depends on whether the population take Netanyahu's bait or not. Despite its political problems, iranian society can be pretty cohesive when it feels under threat and if there's no clear and better alternative then I personally doubt the general population will be keen to overthrow the current lot. Especially if Khamenei is left untouched.

A power vacuum in its current state would only make things worse for the everyday Iranian.

I'm appalled at Israel's behaviour and can't believe that international bodies haven't been more outspoken against Netanyahu's warfare and bloodlust. This is not to say that Iran is an innocent party, far from it, but I find it interesting that this all ramped up the moment it looked like Iran and USA might start forging a better relationship.

I feel Netanyahu felt emboldened after the meek international response to his genocidal campaign against Gaza and he's now decided to just unleash his military wherever he sees fit.

Last note - anyone else notice how somehow the Iranian targets were so well contained whereas the IDF has somehow felt the need to raze Gaza to the ground?

[I in no way hold Jews accountable for the actions of the Israeli government and armed forces. Full disclosure I am half iranian but no anti semite]

And U.K. and Europe will pay the price when tens of millions of refugees head our way again.

Is that Trump’s and his backers’ plan all along?
