European Commission President days Iran shouldn't have nuclear weapons. Israel has right to defend itself

"European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said she told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday that diplomacy was ultimately best on Iran, but stopped short of calling for an immediate ceasefire.

Von der Leyen said that she agreed with Netanyahu in a telephone call that "Iran should not have a nuclear weapon, without any question."

Von der Leyen has previously criticised Israel's actions in Gaza, but said that Iran's non-compliance with the UN nuclear watchdog meant Israel "has the right to defend itself".

"Iran is the principal source of regional instability," she added."

Iran's allies:

"Iran’s key allies include Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthi movement in Yemen, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip, and some militias in Iraq including the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF; also called al-Hashd al-Shaabi)."

Their list of allies should include a few Mumsnetters who are so keen to criticise Israel they are even defending Iran, “the principal source of regional instability”.

I hope regime change can happen in Iran and the unknown is whether any opposition can organise itself within Iran. One question is how the governance of Iran will be eroded in the following days and it's result.

Maybe looking at the allies of Iran might show why Putin has said little.

Syria, a previous close ally of Iran has its own problems.

So China. Risk world trade to side with Iran?

Putin, a strong allie of Iran has yet to speak out on the Iran-Israel conflict.

"As of Friday afternoon, Russian President Vladimir Putin was yet to directly weigh in on Israel’s overnight attacks on military, nuclear and other targets in Iran, though his spokesman Dmitry Peskov did speak out. In his statement, Peskov avoided blaming Israel explicitly, saying Russia is concerned and condemns “the sharp escalation” of tensions between Isael and Iran."
