European Commission President days Iran shouldn't have nuclear weapons. Israel has right to defend itself

"European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said she told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday that diplomacy was ultimately best on Iran, but stopped short of calling for an immediate ceasefire.

Von der Leyen said that she agreed with Netanyahu in a telephone call that "Iran should not have a nuclear weapon, without any question."

Von der Leyen has previously criticised Israel's actions in Gaza, but said that Iran's non-compliance with the UN nuclear watchdog meant Israel "has the right to defend itself".

"Iran is the principal source of regional instability," she added."

What exactly do you think the IAEA is if not an 'international body'. Google is your friend but I've done it for you en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Atomic_Energy_Agency

This is one BBC report on someone seeing some report from them. We need thorough investigations. We cannot afford another Iraq all over again where every one and their mom had some evidence till they didn’t. Therefore, we need proper investigation authorised by international bodies without adding further fuel to the destability in the region. Israel is only planting seeds of generations of hatred in the region with this campaign.
Was the current regime of Iran an outcome of the coup that USA and U.K. brought about? When will we learn lessons? We need thorough investigations in open and not ‘seen by some journalist’.
They were utterly sure about Saddam till they weren’t. And that led to millions of lives lost and tens of millions of refugees inundating Europe, including the U.K.

Again, without international bodies evaluating evidence, it is Israel and Iran’s words against each other. Where is the oversight from international bodies? Where is the security council of the UN? Israel has attacked more of its neighbours than it hasn’t and are all of them backing terrorism? Right. Are we to believe what ICC-wanted war criminal Netenyahu is saying? Is there no international law anymore and anyone with bigger bombs can obliterate anyone?
are we about to see Tehran turn into Gaza? How did the last regime change stabilised the region? Oh hang!

Support neither Israel nor Iran, but the nuclear genie is out of the bottle. Other countries look at the "boys own club" that possess nuclear weaponry and want to have it for themselves. Being lectured to by nuclear powers about why you can't have it will not convince anyone. Recall that Israel developed it's own nuclear capability without "permission"? North Korea, India and Pakistan are also on that list. South Africa also althought hey later gave them up - but still have the capability to build having done it once. And both France and China developed nuclear weapons after refusing to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, then signed it (stopping others from doing so) only after they had developed them.

The UK has just committed £15 billion to replacing nuclear warheads when we say that we cannot afford support for our people - we are willing to invest in potentially destroying others in a war that will end all war, and all people. I despise Iran and all it stands for. But neither Iran nor anywhere else will desist from developing weapons on the say so of countries that have decided that it's ok for them to have them but not anyone else.

Israel has murdered hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians , many would say that Israel is the terrorist !!!!

Do you believe Iran doesn't want to obliterate Israel and will unite with its neighbours to do so?

HellsBalls · 17/06/2025 08:00

@Amplepombear
”Israel has attacked more of its neighbours than it hasn’t and are all of them backing terrorism? Right.”
Right!

At this point, the Israelite regime is serving US purposes with US- and U.K.-built missiles.

We are welcome to the aftermaths of it all.

So we should expect to be targeted here? And if so we deserve it?

You obviously haven't read what I've said about Iran funding terrorism at all. Why quote a comment and then not reply to what is said. Lots of people say lots of things (which I don't condone at all, thats a different matter and needs dealing with) but facts about what has happened already are important.

Please tell me you do realise that without Iran funding terrorists throughout the middle east for years that this situation wouldn't have occurred. Surely you realise that or just another deflection from facts about Iran.

Do you see what the thread is about?

Did you read what other countries are saying and know?

Your comment doesn't follow this discussion at all, maybe you meant it to go on another thread about Israeli ministers?

Israeli ministers have been documented saying they want to obliterate Gaza . Smotrich said that Gaza will be destroyed. By your reasoning does that give the Palestinians the right to kill Israeli civilians ????

@Amplepombear ”Netenyahu’s sickness must be stopped. He has already killed tens of thousands of people!”

According to @Nads0622 it’s hundreds of thousands now. Do keep up.

HellsBalls · 17/06/2025 07:28

@Nads0622
”Netanyahu is a war criminal”
Accused, not convicted.
”He’s killed hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians”
It was allegedly 50,000 (where do you get hundreds of thousands from and who are they?) and closer to 25,000 once you remove the terrorists.
”It’s not ok to go around attacking civilians of neighbouring countries. Israel had no reason to kill civilians in Iran”
The IDF has been killing the nuclear scientists working on developing a nuclear bomb to commit a genocide in Israel.

It hasn't been proven that Iran actually have a nuclear weapon and the whole thing sounds like when we bombed Iraq for having "weapons of mass destruction". (The weapons that never existed) Call me cynical but I'm starting to wonder whether this is just more of the same

They may not have a weapon but are very close, it doesn’t seem like you made much of an effort to find out though?….

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1mg7kx2d45o

the article states that:

In a confidential report seen by the BBC, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said Iran now possesses over 400kg of uranium enriched to 60% purity - well above the level used for civilian purposes and close to weapons grade, and a near 50% increase in three months.
It is enough for about 10 nuclear weapons if further refined, making Iran the only non nuclear-armed state producing uranium at this level.

I have said this before in an earlier post: I have very little faith in any report that has not been thoroughly investigated by international bodies and proof shared with the United Nations.
otherwise it is just the law of the jungle, is it not?
We are back at the old slogan ‘we say Iraq has WMDs so they have it’ again.

Guess how many people it displaced from the region?

We are about to see Gaza repeated at scale. In full view of the world. What utter madness! Netenyahu’s sickness must be stopped. He has already killed tens of thousands of people!

Nads0622 · 17/06/2025 07:05

Nowayyousure · 17/06/2025 06:57

Perhaps the countries 'it is bombing' should stop their respective terrorist organisations (funded by Iran) from attacking Israel (been happening for years!) then Israel wouldn't need to defend itself. There's a reason many, many countries are concerned about Iran and it's funding of terrorism throughout the region. Without funding from Iran, the terrorists wouldn't be able to continue the same way and many people will be better off.

To all intents and purposes Israel is defending itself. And the rest of the ME. And arguably, the West.

Rockets are constantly fired into Israel. Why do you think they have the Iron Dome, bomb shelters, protocols ready in place for civilians?

Iran picked its latest fight with Israel, through Hamas. Hamas had NO chance of winning a physical (as opposed to a PR) war against Israel. They know that, everyone knows that! Do you think they care about the slaughter in Gaza?

I don’t think anyone is saying that countries don’t have the right to defend themselves - obviously they do. And they DO defend themselves. But if you want Iran to have nuclear weapons in the name of ‘fairness’ you need your head examined!

Yes they do.

But somehow it needs to be stated in the case of Israel.

As so many people seem to think they shouldn't have the right to defend themselves.

Are we destabilising whole regions based on BBC reports? Bloody hell. Whatever happened to international investigators and courts? We might as well ditch all of that and admit it’s Iraq and the weapons of mass destruction all over again.

I find it utterly baffling that even one sane person on this earth can believe what comes out of the mouth of Netenyahu and his crony war criminal regime!

The BBC is the messenger. The report is from the IAEA - Independent of both the BBC and Israel. We have a longstanding international system of monitoring nuclear and Iran has been a focus of concern for years.

G7 Leaders' statement on recent developments between Israel and Iran

We, the leaders of the G7, reiterate our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East.
In this context, we affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel.
We also affirm the importance of the protection of civilians.
Iran is the principal source of regional instability and terror.
We have been consistently clear that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.
We urge that the resolution of the Iranian crisis leads to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza.
We will remain vigilant to the implications for international energy markets and stand ready to coordinate, including with like-minded partners, to safeguard market stability.

@Amplepombear this was what you seem to need to read. Actually read what countries know about irans funding of terrorism in the region. I'd added the incorrect quote to previous post.

They were in talks long before Israel started this. Trump tore that discussion apart and here we are. And are you still trying to convince people that Hamas wee hiding amongst the babies that Israel has killed and keeps killing with impunity?

Edited. This is the incorrect post quoted see below.

@Amplepombear read this. See how many countries are aware of why Israel need to defend themselves. They are all aware of who funds terrorists in the middle east..... Iran.

Or it might be better to get rid of the Iranian regime who have vowed genocide on Israel?
Iran has been kidnapped by the Islamist fundamentalists, who fund terrorism across the region and support Russia.
Time to say goodbye to them really. Netanyahu is a hero.

Edited

Netanyahu is a war criminal who’s had an arrest warrant issued by the international criminal warrant. es killed hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians . It’s not ok to go around attacking civilians of neighbouring countries. Israel had no reason to kill civilians in Iran , there’s no excuse for killing civilians . The hypocrisy is huge .
Israel itself hasn’t signed the treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons despite pressure to
do so. I don’t even know where to
begin with the hypocrisy of it all.

Iran was not in the table for talks. The only reason they want to talk now is because Israel have already got air superiority.
Their dream of inflicting a genocide on Israel has been crushed. If they concede now, perhaps they can hang onto power.
At least Iran has the sense to ask for talks, unlike their proxy Hamas who have cost the lives of thousands of Gazans, by hiding in amongst them, and about 25,000 of their own members, such is their hatred of Israel.
It’s not just Trump supporting Israel. Read the news.
