European Commission President days Iran shouldn't have nuclear weapons. Israel has right to defend itself

"European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said she told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday that diplomacy was ultimately best on Iran, but stopped short of calling for an immediate ceasefire.

Von der Leyen said that she agreed with Netanyahu in a telephone call that "Iran should not have a nuclear weapon, without any question."

Von der Leyen has previously criticised Israel's actions in Gaza, but said that Iran's non-compliance with the UN nuclear watchdog meant Israel "has the right to defend itself".

"Iran is the principal source of regional instability," she added."

Yes they do.

But somehow it needs to be stated in the case of Israel.

As so many people seem to think they shouldn't have the right to defend themselves.

Is it the right to defend you want to see confirmed or the right to carry out any actions and call them defence?

Israel is the most protected nation in the world thanks to the Iron Dome, largely funded by the US. This is what has enabled it to fire indiscriminately at Palestine with little fear of retribution. Prior to 2023, Palestinians were 15 times more likely to be killed than Israelis in these conflicts. That number is much higher now.

The 7th of October attacks were horrific, and there is no justification for it. But it is also true they did not come out of nowhere. Israel is always painted as a peace loving nation who just want to live quietly and not be bothered, but history shows us this has not been true of all governments.

Israel has as much right as any other to defend themselves. Any defence must be proportionate, and I find it difficult to see how anyone could say what is happening in Palestine is proportionate. Part of that defence must also be to work towards a peaceful settlement with Palestine, but there has been no sign of any will to do so from the current government.

Iran is a threat to the world, and I’m sure Israel feels that as much as any nation, but is the current attack a defence against an imminent threat? Or is it designed to put Israel once more into “victim” status to take the heat off genocide in Palestine? One thing is certain, the Iranian people will fare much worse than the Israeli people in this conflict.

"But I dont know why anyone here is bothering, the ignorance on this thread is really, really shocking."

I know what you mean, I would also add the batshit conspiracy theories and factually false statements.

It's all very tiresome.

It's truly concerning, if some of the views expressed here are really what people are thinking. I hope it's just mumsnet and not the general population.

Is it? Are you saying the people of Israel have elected a war criminal who has an arrest warrant on his person by the ICC? And who is responsible for genocide and ethnic cleansing not to mention land grab from Palestinian people as per evidence from several international organisations? Are you saying Israeli people elected a government several of whose ministers were about ot be banned in the UK due to their extremist ideologies right before Netenyahu launched this illegal war?

Are you saying all of this?

I'm saying Israel is a democracy and can chose regime change for itself. If Israelis are unhappy with their current administration they are free to vote for alternatives at the next election. That's just a fact.

The rest of your post is emotional hyperbole, as are all your other posts. I honestly don't think its worth engaging you on most of it. I just wanted to make sure you and others reading this are aware that Israel is a democracy.

You are aware Israel is a democracy and can affect its own regime change at any election time?

Are we back to ‘Israel = Jews = you are an anti-Semite’ again?

I thought we were over that argument ages ago. But as we are going back in circles changing regimes to destabilise the region more, who cares, right?

Are we back to ‘Israel = Jews = you are an anti-Semite’ again?

What do you even mean by that in the context of pp’s post? That aiming for the destruction of Israel is okay, because Israel doesn’t automatically equal Jews?

Israeli needs a regime change. We can’t have a war criminal sowing seeds of terrorism in the region with his fingers on a nuke button. No way in hell.

I am talking about the visual impact of these constant aggressions Israel is doing. Gaza is never going to fade away from the memories of the people who have seen these pictures and videos. Social media’s advent has made it possible for the world to evolve together and be more informed about these wars.

And no, I do not believe ICC’s wanted war criminal Netenyahu will be happy for his people to elect away at their will.

There was a lot of unrest about his policies and corruption and all of what he has done in the last two years is buying him time.

I am talking about the visual impact of these constant aggressions Israel is doing.

Again, why are you only focusing on one side? Only seeing the aggression that comes from one side?
No “visuals” from other aggressors?
Someone on a different thread described it as Hamas being merely regarded as background noise by some, while they focus their entire attention on Israel.
That does seem to be the case, also now in the context of Iran.

And the statement says Israel should be allowed to attack Iran?

It states that we affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself and We reiterate our support for the security of Israel.

Also, the fact that they are not condemning the attack speaks volumes.

Speaking of countries at risk from Russia, this was an interesting watch.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/m002cg5l/scandinavia-with-simon-reeve

Nuclear bunkers under public buildings and national service, some countries take defending their people seriously. I was interested in the way Norway used it's oil wealth and the way Russia is encroaching it's population on Scandi territory that it wants. Maybe next step will be the little green men going in to protect Russian citizens as per Ukraine.

Remember the fragrant Theresa May saying 'of course she would use nuclear weapons if necessary'. It's all pseudo-willy waving till you get someone unpredictable or fanatic in charge. The kind of person that doesn't fear death because they believe it's a better option or they've nothing to lose.

Scandinavia with Simon Reeve

Simon Reeve journeys across a land of Arctic tundra, vast forests and stunning fjords, investigating the surprising secrets of some of the happiest and most equal societies on earth.

Not just her… the statement has also been signed by all the G7 countries America, Canada, Japan, France, Italy, Germany & the UK that Iran must never be allowed to have nuclear weapons.

Yes this too. The pp is out of step if they’re talking about protecting Europe in pp.

Take a look at the U vd L statement representing the EU. She and they are aware of the threat from Iran having nuclear weapons.

In The history of this world, no nuclear power has ever attacked any other nuclear power.

This Israeli aggression in the last two years has made ensure that every country in that region will want a nuke. Look at what happened with Ukraine when they gave up their nuclear programme. Who has been able to save them? In a world where Trump and war criminals like Netenyahu rampage free, who can blame these countries anyway?
if I were a mid east nation, I would get a nuke pronto. Same for the countries at risk from Russia.
and who is backing all this chaos? Trump and his cronies - both in Russia and in Israel.
and who is paying the price for it with their economy and wars on their lands as well as displaced millions? Europe.

Sorry I am not buying this argument and the threat should be investigated and assessed by international bodies, not by a war mongering genocidal regimes like Israel’s. They are the last one we should think of when thinking world peace and harmony.

Hamas, funded by Iran, is a terrorist organisation hell bent on the destruction of Israel and Jews. They hide their weaponry among their people and use them as human shields. I am really not sure what else Israel can do to remove the threat of Hamas and October 7th happening again and again.

Well, same goes for Israel then. It can have a change of government via their own people (which, given they’re a democracy, is more likely to actually happen). Have you seen how political opposition is treated in Iran?
You’re talking about Israel “sawing seeds of terrorism in the region”, yet don’t seem to see the same issue with Iran.
