Israel is a country at war and I know many will have links or family in that country so I think it appropriate to wish them safety in the coming days.

Because it was your clear implication. You weren't wishing them well, were you? Why are you still tying yourself in knots about it? Your meaning was clear, you said what you said, just own it.

What I actually said was that I wished for Israelis exactly what they wish for Palestinians. You were the one who jumped to the conclusion that I want Israelis to suffer. Maybe you should reflect on why you assume Israelis are so hateful that this must be the case.

How does Israel cope with constant war? It's surrounded by hate and has known nothing but terror and war since its inception. Not much of a 'promised land': I just don't know how they survive. @missdeamenor

It might be something to do with the weaponry that they've got.

When you are using guns on kids with sticks it sure does help survival rates doesn't it?

@purpletablet ”And they have done it with no army, no state, and no protection. Just resilience”

You mean just terrorism?

purpletablet · 17/06/2025 22:42

cupfinalchaos · 17/06/2025 22:23

There is so much to live for there, so much worth fighting for. When they’re not being bombed it’s an amazing life.

Oh, give over! It’s the Palestinians who have known nothing but terror since Israel’s inception. They have been forced from their homes, occupied, blockaded, bombed, and dehumanised for generations. Israel is not the victim in this story. It is the regional superpower, armed to the teeth, backed by global powers, and enforcing brutal control over a stateless population.

Framing Israel as a helpless nation just trying to survive is laughable. If anyone has had to survive against all odds, it is the Palestinians. And they have done it with no army, no state, and no protection. Just resilience in the face of Israel’s brutality.

It’s funny. When I said I wished for Israelis exactly what they wished for Palestinians, the immediate assumption was that I must want Israelis to suffer. Maybe ask yourself why that was your first thought.

20% of the Israeli population are non-jewish Arabs. I wonder if those calling for “Free Palestine” picture a future Palestine with 20% Jews? If not why not?

Before Balfour and the Nakba - weren’t the Arabs and Jews living together relatively harmoniously in the Palestinian region until Zionism took hold?

“With the establishment of the British Mandate of Palestine after World War I, the first British census of Palestine in 1922 enumerated a total population of about 750,000, of which 78 percent were Muslim, 11 percent Jewish and 10 percent Christian (Table 1). Nearly 25 years later, before the United Nations’ partition of the Mandate for Palestine, in 1947, the population had grown to nearly 1.8 million, with 60 percent Muslim, 31 percent Jewish and 8 percent Christian.”

Surely the US getting involved with actual bombs would not de-escalate the situation! What’s wrong with people. @PaxAeterna

Never underestimate the stupidity / gullibility or greed of some people.

It's sad, but it's true.

I'm not upset by you "holding a mirror" or whatever l, I'm upset at your callousness and hypocrisy.

Yes I condemn it. I, unlike you, don't want anyone to be hurt.

I still find it a bit scary that 16% of Americans would support military action against Iran.

Surely the US getting involved with actual bombs would not de-escalate the situation! What’s wrong with people.

It's the Evangelicals, they're a doozy and some believe:
"...that the existence of the State of Israel is a necessary precursor to the end times, often referred to as the "end times prophecy". This belief is rooted in interpretations of biblical prophecies, primarily from the Old Testament, which suggest that the gathering of the Jewish people in the land of Israel is a prerequisite for the second coming of Jesus Christ.

This is a message from the current American Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee that Trump shared today:

To wish those in Israel safety in these coming times

You’re twisting what I said. I didn’t say anyone deserves harm. I was pointing out the double standard in how people react when the same sentiments come from different sides. When Palestinians express rage after decades of occupation, displacement, and bombardment, they’re labelled as savages. But when Israelis express open hatred or call for Gaza to be “flattened,” it’s often excused as justified anger or self-defence.

My comment was meant to hold up a mirror. It was asking why violence wished upon Palestinians is so widely accepted, while even imagining that reversed causes outrage. That is the double standard. And the fact that people are more upset by my words than by the actual suffering of Palestinians only proves my point.

I don't think it was holding up a mirror. You said what you said, it was super clear. The only mirror that seems relevant here is the one showing your double standards towards civilians.

GretaGreen · 17/06/2025 22:11

HellsBalls · 17/06/2025 21:25

@GretaGreen of course there is a silent minority.
Remember Brexit? Remember Jeremy Corbyn?
In the bag apparently!

It’s single digit % that can be arsed supporting Gaza.
Who commits terrorism? No one is afraid of Jewish extremism when they visit London.
Jews didn’t commit 9/11 or 7/7, or the bombings in Madrid and Paris, or the stabbing all over Europe. There is a thread amongst all of them though, and it’s not Judaism.

Like I said prove it. Post a single poll that backs up what you are saying. You can spew your hate all day long but it doesn't change the facts on the ground.

devourfeculence · 17/06/2025 22:03

purpletablet · 17/06/2025 21:34

You’re focusing so hard on my wording that you’re avoiding the real issue. If you’re upset by me holding up a mirror to the hatred expressed by some Israelis, then what do you make of the actual harm Israel has inflicted on Palestinians? Thousands of civilians killed, entire neighbourhoods flattened, children buried under rubble, sniped in the head! Do you condemn that?

I'm not upset by you "holding a mirror" or whatever l, I'm upset at your callousness and hypocrisy.

Yes I condemn it. I, unlike you, don't want anyone to be hurt.

Kakeandkake · 17/06/2025 21:53

Or do you just hate Palestinians so much that you find it difficult to accept that the vast majority do care about them?

purpletablet · 17/06/2025 21:53

DigitalInteractor · 17/06/2025 20:39

Do you mean the REGION of Palestine? Palestine is not and never has been a country.

I think ordinary people stand with innocent civilians who want to live in peace and live their lives as most of Western civilisation does, free from living in fear from a mad Mullah regime and demented terrorist proxies who indoctrinate evil and hatred, bring war on their people (and kill them themselves), and use them as human sacrifices for a fake cause created by an ideology which will not accept a Jewish State due to centuries old religious conflict.

That means standing with Israel to most people.

Dismissing Palestine as a “fake cause” ignores the reality of millions who’ve lived under occupation and oppression for decades. You say you stand with civilians who want peace. So do I. That includes Palestinians. Painting them all as terrorists while justifying everything Israel does isn’t support for peace, it’s support for domination.

BelleHathor · 17/06/2025 21:46

Stripes56 · 17/06/2025 21:22

I am not sure what you mean by ‘standing with Israel’

However, there are polls and trackers that ask somewhat related questions- so we don’t need to guess what most people think.

Here are few headlines:

Net favourability towards Israel in Germany (-44), France (-48) and Denmark (-54) has reached its lowest level since we started tracking in 2016. Public sentiment in Italy (-52) and Spain(-55) are likewise at their lowest or joint lowest levels, albeit over a shorter timespan from 2021 onwards.

Overall, only 13-21% in any country have a favourable opinion of Israel, compared to 63-70% who have an unfavourable view.

Fewer people likewise now ‘side’ with the Israelis in our sympathy tracker. Between 7-18% say they sympathise most with the Israeli side, the lowest or joint-lowest figure in five of our six countries since the Hamas attacks.

By contrast, between 18% and 33% say they sympathise more with the Palestinian side; only in Germany are the figures for each side similar (17% for Israel, 18% for Palestine).

Very few people think that 7/10 was justified- shows you don’t have to be ‘pro-Hamas’ to ‘not stand by Israel’

https://ygo-assets-websites-editorial-emea.yougov.net/documents/Eurotrack_IsraelPalestineConflict_May25_w.pdf

And on the latest conflict with Iran,
60% of Americans do not* support military action against Iran by America.

  • 18% are supportive of America threatening Iran with military action to abandon it's nuclear program.

Except you are the one expressing double standards, saying Palestinians withing harm on Israelis is different than vice versa. And yes, saying that you wish Israelis who with harm on others get what they wish on others is undeniably wishing harm.

Fair enough but if we’re questioning moral boundaries, I could just as easily ask how someone can still support Israel at this point. After everything that’s happened, after the scale of destruction and civilian death, including a mind boggling number of children, continuing to defend Israel raises serious moral questions too.

Most people agree Israel has gone too far

Not grasping for moral outrage, just working out what your moral boundaries are.
