BBC report a new ceasefire agreement mediated by the US. Israel has agreed to it. Waiting for Hamas to decide if they also want a ceasefire.

Exactly… it’s always been completely obvious to me that Israel care about the hostages.

Hamas obviously know it too… but people on here think they know better than the people holding the hostages how precious they are to Israel.

Of course Israel care about the hostages but the hostage families do not think Netanyahu and his actions in Gaza have put them as priority he's pretty much admitted it. Their actions in Gaza have gone well beyond hostage recovery. Why did they not go to phase two of if they were their priority?

That’s what I find so fascinating, how many people regard themselves as experts on this topic.
I think it’s a very complex conflict, I’ve been trying to learn more about it since October 7th (although I had some basic knowledge before that).
Still, I wouldn’t just claim to know what Israelis/ Palestinians think/ want.

That’s what I think too, but some people will still say that “it’s obviously never been about the hostages” and claim that Israel doesn’t care about them.
Have seen it many times on this board.

Losing a conflict using means surrender not dictating what you want whilst watching your people suffer.

What an odd outlook. This isn’t a movie, it’s not good vs bad.
In what sense is Israel taking over Gaza and treating Palestinian citizens as second class people a “win”?

How is an odd outlook to suggest that in a war it normally ends with one side surrendering and the other side is assumed by the outside world to have won?

Germany’s surrender for example was equated with them having lost the war. Not many people are questioning whether any side can really be said to have won based on the huge number of civilian casualties.

I imagine they are desperate to agree to get hostages back so will release a large number of prisoners in return

The ratio of 28 Israeli hostages (alive and dead) to 1,236 Palestinian prisoners and the remains of 180 dead Palestinians is crazy, considering that even Putin Russia agreed to releasing the same number of prisoners of war as Ukraine in their recent exchange (1000 from each side).

A very large number of prisoners released too.

"News agency Reuters says the proposal is for a 60-day ceasefire and the release of 28 Israeli hostages - alive and dead - in the first week. In exchange, it proposes Israel would release 1,236 Palestinian prisoners and the remains of 180 dead Palestinians, Reuters reports.

It also reportedly includes sending humanitarian aid to Gaza via the UN and aid organisations once Hamas signs off on the agreement.

Reuters reports that the remaining 30 hostages would then be released once a permanent ceasefire is in place, and that Israel would cease all military operations in Gaza as soon as the truce takes effect"

Don't mention Hamas refusing peace terms......it's against the genocide narrative so many one here wish to push.

It is a pretty mainstream view now to be fair. Mumsnet posters are not outliers in this view.

Don't mention Hamas refusing peace terms
The majority of people want a ceasefire, release of hostages and an end to the destruction of Gaza and its people. What people don't want is the displacement and cleansing of Gaza and an Israeli occupation. You would do well to remember that Israel collapsed the previous ceasefire agreement by reengaging with fighting and not moving to phase 2 of the plan. That decision cost countless Palestinian lives, led to their humanitarian aid blockade and no doubt put their hostages at tremendous risk who would be home by now if phase 2 had proceeded.

It's not an odd outlook. In conflicts there are sides that win or lose, that's reality.

Often losing sides surrender because they think of their people, Japan after the US bombing for example. They could have gone on fighying, but the leaders chose to put their people first, and built an amazing country after the end of WW2. Look at Japan now.

"Israeli media cited Israeli officials as saying it would see Hamas hand over 10 living hostages and the bodies of 18 dead hostages in two phases in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire and the release of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails."

If it goes ahead then more hostages will be released and bodies of hostages returned.
