The Children Starve First

I wanted to open a space to reflect on something that’s been haunting me.

I've noticed in reports from Gaza that children are dying of starvation at shocking rates — even more than adults. At first I wondered how this could be, given that children need less food than adults. But I’ve since learned that children are actually the first to die in famine situations.

Here’s why:

  • Children have smaller bodies but higher nutritional needs per kilogram, especially during growth spurts. They need regular, balanced intake to maintain development.
  • Malnutrition hits them faster — their energy stores are smaller, and their bodies have less ability to adapt to a lack of nutrients.
  • Their immune systems weaken rapidly, making them far more likely to die from diseases that an adult body might fight off.
  • Infants and toddlers can’t chew tougher emergency rations or go without water as long, and breastfed babies suffer if their mothers are dehydrated or malnourished.
  • The UN says that in every famine, the first to die are the smallest and weakest.
The stories of babies dying in their mothers’ arms — not from bombs or bullets but from hunger — are unbearable. I can’t stop thinking about the terror and anguish these parents must feel. How helpless it must be to watch your child fade away slowly, knowing you have nothing left to give them.

I know we talk about current events, about war, politics, sides — but surely, we can unite around this: no child should starve to death in their mother’s arms.

Why are Palestinians held in prison that have never been charged with a crime hardly ever mentioned? Why aren't people calling for their release too?

Netanyahu and his government have been very clear that, regardless of what Hamas do or don't do, they will continue to "cleanse" Gaza. As I said they didn't seem interested in moving to phase 2 of a plan that would have released all hostages by now

Edited

Do you think Netanyahu is more likely to get away with 'cleansing' Gaza ( which i don't support by the way ) if Hamas surrenders and returns the hostages, or if Hamas cling onto power and hostages until the bitter end?

Yes. So many people suffering. If only Hamas would just end it now.

If not his tacit support they have apathy from the US government. The Palestinian people have been so dehumanised for so long.

Dehumanised is the correct description. As were Jewish people by Hitler. Both want/ed genocide.
Have we learnt nothing?

Yes of course and no doubt the lack of access to aid is effecting them too. Netanyahu has not prioritised their safe release. I still don't understand why they did not move to phase 2 of ceasefire agreement no clear explanation was ever provided

I'd argue that releasing the hostages is time critical too.

maltravers · 22/05/2025 16:31

Hamas are scumbags and terrorists imo, yes they should release the hostages, but it’s still illegal, immoral and disgusting for the Israeli government to starve children in Gaza as leverage/revenge/ethnic war.

ComeAsYouAreAsAFriend · 22/05/2025 16:17

@dairydebris ... it's not actually their aid to hold back I believe.
You are right in that. Many governments have spent tens of millions on humanitarian aid, civilians from across the globe have donated money to fund humanitarian aid yet the majority of it is sitting outside Gaza.

but not a single call for Hamas to hand back the hostages and surrender, which would have the aid flowing immediately and without pause.
There are negotiations ongoing the children in Gaza don't have time to wait. Aid needs to flow regardless of anything else that happens. Hamas need to release the hostages but access to aid is time critical Israel should never have collectively punished the citizens at all it is a war crime.

I'd argue that releasing the hostages is time critical too.

@dairydebris I watched Netanyahus speech, he didn't say this would stop if Hamas surrenders. And how can we continue to call Israel an ally when they are punishing babies who have no sway in the conflict because of the actions of a terrorist group.

Well we choose our allies based on more than just morals I believe. And Israel is more than it's current government. So the decision of whether or not to align with Israel is based on many things such as our own national security, financial considerations etc. Not just on whether Israel is currently right or wrong. You could as well ask why we are allied with the US while they have Trump in charge and are arming the Saudis and consequently starving Yemeni babies. Apologies for the whataboutery, I'm just pointing out an ally isn't a purely moral decision.

Israel has repeatedly said the aim of the war is to crush Hamas. Whether or not you or I believe that's truly his aim, if Hamas surrendered he'd be under unbearable internal and international pressure to stop blocking aid and stop the airstrikes. Even Gazans are calling for this. They know that's what they need.

I agree the aid needs to flow now.

Oh and look. It is true that all is not as it seems.

This account exposes a lot. A veritable acting school going on. The Palestinian children being used is disgusting and explains why this cycle of violence will continue.

A lot of people are so totally blinded by hate for Israel (and the Jewish people) and dismiss that Hamas’s main weapon is anti Israel propaganda creating even more global hatred and condemnation of not only Israel, but Jewish people in general.

It’s baffling to me that people didn’t join up the dots as to why they started a war they knew they could not possibly win militarily.

Mugs, the lot of them.

Kakeandkake · 22/05/2025 16:05

I think most people are in agreement that Hamas are a terrorist group. What has shocked people like me and others is the IDF and the Israeli government which is supposed to be a western style democracy is purposefully STARVING two million people. It is abhorrent that not only are they doing that, but attacking friendly countries who have supported them in this war and calling them anti-semitic for asking them to please not starve innocent children.

Our government isn't perfect, but Keir Starmer is not anti-semitic and he shouldn't be subjected to accusations of blood libel by the Israeli government, just because after two years of watching Palestinians suffer he has finally spoken up.

dairydebris · 22/05/2025 15:38

Israel should absolutely just let as much aid as possible in and I think honestly who cares if Hamas gets some... it's not actually their aid to hold back I believe.

But I'm in resigned disgust once again, a whole thread of shouting about how awful Israel is to hold back this aid ( I agree ) but not a single call for Hamas to hand back the hostages and surrender, which would have the aid flowing immediately and without pause.

It would be better for Gazans if Hamas would just do this now. Right now. Then Netanyahu absolutely could not carry through his plan for razing Gaza to the ground.

I know I'll get a pile on of everyone saying Israel will never stop. OK, none of us has a crystal ball and can see what Israel would do if Hamas surrendered. But the likelihood of children starving and being killed would be immediately cut. And they'd have a chance of keeping their land.

At this point, for all of this to stop, either Israel ceasefire, or Hamas surrender. It would be better for Gaza for Hamas to surrender.

I agree with everyone that this is becoming almost impossible to watch.

AIBUHere · 22/05/2025 15:25

This is interesting. From a Gazan taking about flour being hidden and sold on for 2500 shekels (£500) a bag.

How did the UN allow this?

No wonder Israel wants to set up its own Aid distribution channels.

Also that he regrets coming into Gaza from Egypt.

How is Starmer whose wife and children are also Jewish, being blamed by the Israeli government for the murder of two Jewish people in America?? It doesn't make any sense. Just because he dared to call them out for starving Palestinian children?

Kakeandkake · 22/05/2025 14:47

It is manipulation and an attempt to silence criticism and has been done time and time again by Netanyahu and his government during this war.

ScrollingLeaves · 22/05/2025 14:30

The same here. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

The murderer himself is to blame, and looking to kill or harm Jewish people because of what some people in Israel’s government are doing is outrageous, and will not help.

If anyone is looking to to cast blame though, as the speaker on the radio was doing, blame should fall on Israel’s terrorist kahanists controlling their government and their Israeli extremist supporters - who are driving the conditions in Gaza which European people perceive as being genocidal - not directed at the people objecting to them.

I’ve just heard an apologist for the Israeli government’s actions complaining on R4 that the focus on starving children in Gaza is a blood libel against Jews. So angry I had to swear at the radio and switch it off. The accusations are against the Israeli government’s actions! Not Jews in general! Children are starving! How dare you weaponise antisemitism to undermine people’s concern about starving children. Disgusting.

It’s terrible. If criticism towards Israel that is based on human rights, not hate is all labelled as anti semitism, then it makes Jewish people more vulnerable in the long run.

It just becomes harder to talk about the actual increase in hate and violence that ordinary Jewish people are experiencing right now when the label is thrown at everyone….and it’s pretty much being thrown at everyone now. Maybe not Trump and his cronies but that’s it.

Kakeandkake · 22/05/2025 13:53

I think the Israeli government would do well to take a moment to reflect on their actions and listen to well meaning allies. Our government is not the enemy - a good friend and ally should point out (as the british government has done) when their allied country has set course for self destruction through unjustifiable actions.

ScrollingLeaves · 22/05/2025 13:52

YourOnMute · 22/05/2025 11:30

I've seen too many starving children on my social media.
And dead children, child amputees, disabled children, children with raging infections.
How come you're not seeing this?

And with third degree burns in absolute agony. I know that from listening to a western female doctor.

The Israeli government have done the same today by saying our government Is at fault for criticising them and trying to partly put the blame on them over the awful shooting and murder of two innocent Jewish people today in America.

I think most people can clearly see that both are wrong and we can't stay silent anymore whilst thousands of innocent lives are at risk.

@AIBUHere do you accept that Smotrich, Ben-Gvir and Netanyahu are extremist war criminals?

They really are.

sualipa · 22/05/2025 12:20

When an ex IDF general and member of the Knesset says the Israelis are "killing babies as a hobby" then the writing is surely on the wall for those that want to read it.

“A sane country doesn’t engage in fighting against civilians, doesn’t kill babies as a hobby and doesn’t set for itself the goals of expelling a population,”
